UNIT 1: Looking for work ENTRY Dear all: It is time to work on our first unit of this module.

We will deal with a very interesting topic which I am sure we are all familiar with: Looking for work. In several occasions professionals all over the world have to face this situation and this unit seeks to get us to share experiences and get some useful tips on how to do it successfully. You will start with a survey in which you will have to agree or disagree with some statements. These statements are about your job preferences. I suggest taking the survey to have a clear idea of what the unit would be like and to get involved in the topic. In Chapter 1: The Idol Life: Entrepreneurial Geniuses, we will read about people who have managed to be quite successful in what they do. The reading skills to pay attention to is: Scanning is a technique you often use when looking up a word in the telephone book or dictionary. You search for key words or ideas. In most cases, you know what you're looking for, so you're concentrating on finding a particular answer. Scanning involves moving your eyes quickly down the page seeking specific words and phrases. Scanning is also used when you first find a resource to determine whether it will answer your questions. Once you've scanned the document, you might go back and skim it. For some additional practice on scanning please click on the following links: http://web2.uvcs.uvic.ca/elc/studyzone/570/pulp/hemp2.htm http://www.uefap.com/reading/exercise/scan/xray.htm http://www.uefap.com/reading/exercise/scan/monst.htm In the Vocabulary comprehension section we will work on: WORD DEFINITIONS. You will find 10 words and phrases taken from the article and you will have to match its meaning. A strategy to complete this task is to try to find the word and try to get its meaning in context. By doing so you will be able to not only correctly complete task A, but also understand the article. After you have completed activity A, you will have to complete activity B in which you are asked to complete some sentences with the new words learned. Remember that using the new vocabulary is the best way to make sure it sticks with us. In the vocabulary skill section we will work on the root word: ten/tain. There is a chart you have to complete and then write a definition for each word. For some additional vocabulary and practice on this topic, please link on: http://quizlet.com/2584486/root-word-tain-ten-tent-flash-cards/ Chapter 2 is called Job Interviews type. We will warm up for this chapter by asking some questions about our previous job interviews experiences. I am sure we have all been in at least one. In activity B there are 5 phrasal verbs and 5 definitions which you will have to match. Phrasal verbs expand our vocabulary so it is always a great thing to learn as many as possible. For additional practice on phrasal verbs, go to:

Skimming is used to quickly identify the main ideas of a text. When you read the newspaper, you're probably not reading it wordby-word, instead you're scanning the text. Skimming is done at a speed three to four times faster than normal reading. People often skim when they have lots of material to read in a limited amount of time. Use skimming when you want to see if an article may be of interest in your research. For skimming further practice go to: http://web2.uvcs.uvic.ca/elc/studyzone/570/pulp/hemp1.htm http://www.uefap.com/reading/exercise/skim/qualteac.htm We will later work on reading comprehension tasks which will helps notice if you have grasped the entirety of the article we read. A good way to keep track of our achievement is by taking note of how long it takes us to read the article, how many times we need to read it and even how many right answers we got in the first try. It is also recommendable to try to identify useful expressions we will later use. In the vocabulary comprehension section we will have to work on vocabulary items from the reading and identify which one does not belong to a specific group. In the vocabulary skill section there is information about HOMOPHONES. is a word that is pronounced the same as another word but differs in meaning and spelling. The words may be spelled the same, such as rose (flower) and rose (past tense of "rise"), or differently, such as carat, caret, and carrot, orto, two, and too. http://www.tolearnenglish.com/exercises/exercise-english-2/exercise-english-46618.php http://www.tolearnenglish.com/exercises/exercise-english-2/exercise-english-28860.php Finally in the real life skill section we will work on some useful abbreviations.
