Rabbis Message
This May 17th our Shabbat Morning Hevre will hold its siyyum, completion, of another year of studies. I cannot adequately express how grateful I am to the people who participate in this Hevre. They come to the temple early on Saturday mornings, share bagels and coffee together, and create an atmosphere of friendship. And most importantly, together we participate in one of the most "Shabbosdik" activities there is - study. Study is the life blood of Judaism, and study on Shabbat is one of the highest forms of Shabbat observance. There is no fee for our Hevre, and it goes without saying that people are free to come or not come on any given Shabbat, according to their convenience. There are no "homework assignments," and ancillary reading is entirely voluntary, so as to make the sessions as accessible as possible for all. I'm delighted to say we have a relatively steady core of some two dozen "regulars" who devote themselves to weekly Shabbat study and hevruta. We have spent this year studying the Book of Deuteronomy. The book is presented as the final soliloquy of Moses, as he and the Children of Israel stand at the (east) bank of the Jordan River. Joshua is poised to lead the Israelites across the Jordan into the Land of Israel, which God has promised to their ancestors, to them, and to all the generations of our people for all time. The conventional wisdom is that the Book of Deuteronomy was written sometime in the 7th century BCE, and reflects the growing centralization of Jewish worship within Jerusalem, and the Priesthood as the leadership within the Jerusalem Temple and its precincts. There is an unequivocal rejection of the beliefs and practices of Canaanite worship; the Canaanites, of course, having been the occupants of the land before the Israelites got there. Among the most repulsive of these practices was child sacrifice, as it is believed to have been practiced, by means of passing children through the fire to Molech, a god of the Canaanite pantheon. In addition, Deuteronomy lays down a number of domestic laws governing marital and filial relationships, judgments for civil damages, decent behavior on the part of the Israelites, and kindness toward animals as well. Perhaps among the most significant is a sequence of admonitions regarding fair and kind treatment of the disadvantaged in the community: the poor, the stranger, the Levite, the widow, and the orphan - those in ancient society who had no power or resources of their own, and could not own land. Over and over again we read, "You shall not oppress the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt." This is our "mantra" as Jews. It is the core ethic of our tradition. At the end of book is the majestic poetry of "Ha'azinu," which usually is chanted according to our calendar on Shabbat Shuva, between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. And finally comes the death of Moses himself, as he casts his gaze upon the Land of Israel from across the Jordan for one final poignant moment. Our Shabbat Morning Hevre will start up again next September, same time (Saturdays, 9:00 AM), same place (4th floor). I hope you will join us, whether weekly or occasionally. Our subject matter varies from year to year. But the subject itself is almost secondary to the act of Shabbat study itself - in my view, a supreme act of holiness. According to our tradition, when we complete a course of study, we recite a special Kaddish known as the Kaddish d'Rabbanan, or "Rabbis' Kaddish." Debbie Friedman, z"l, wrote a particularly lovely rendition of this Kaddish that reads: For our teachers and their students, and the students of the students, we ask for peace and lovingkindness, and let us say, Amen. And for those who study Torah here and everywhere, may they be blessed with all they need, and let us say, Amen. We ask for peace and lovingkindness, and let us say, Amen. -Rabbi Linda Henry Goodman 2
Officers Column
We changed the date of this years annual meeting of the congregation from Sunday, May 11th to Wednesday evening, May 14th. Why? To avoid a conflict with Mothers Day, of course. No one can quite recall how the calendar committee didnt think of that conflict a year ago, but well, we didnt. As it happens, this year marks the hundredth anniversary of President Wilsons first official proclamation of Mothers Day on the second Sunday in May, 1914. I looked up the background, and learned that it was promoted first by Anna Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia, starting in 1908, then by Philadelphia department store merchant John Wanamaker. Soon it was celebrated nationwide, and ultimately in many other countries as well. Even with the inevitable commercialization over time (which greatly dismayed Anna Jarvis), Mothers Day continues to be a sentimental favorite a hundred years later, and deservedly so. So of course we changed the annual meeting date. The annual meeting will include the election of officers and trustees. The incumbent officers have been nominated for reelection: President: Bea Hanks Vice Presidents: Abe Barnett Ellen Kolikoff Jeff Stein There are two new trustees on the slate for election: Eric Siegel, for a term ending in June 2015; and Michael Glikin, for a term ending in June 2017. There are also eight incumbent trustees on the slate for reelection for a term ending in June 2017: Neil Cohen, Hortense Hurwitz, Ellen Kolikoff, Dr. Marvin Lieberman, Robert Newhouser, David Rapheal, Leonard Shiller and Henry Singer. Well see you on Wednesday evening, May 14th. Since its an evening meeting, well do our best to keep it brief, with just a few reports summarizing the highlights of the past year. Happy Mothers Day! -Steven Segall, Secretary Treasurer: Leonard Shiller Secretary: Steven Segall

May is the last month of Religious School. Our last day of Religious School is Sunday May 18th. This has been a great school year! We have made some small changes to the curriculum such as a self- paced Hebrew program, introducing Shalom Yoga an alternative prayer experience, and prayer and music sessions with our own student cantor Emma Goldin. I want to thank all of the teachers, students and parents for an amazing year. I would also like to thank the Religious School Committee for their constant support. The success of this year is due to everyones participation. Please keep an eye out over the summer for Religious School registration for next year. -Mindy Sherry, Director of Youth and Family Engagement

Preschool
This year we were fortunate to welcome a former Union Temple Preschool student to our professional ranks. Julie Reed, who attended Union Temple Preschool as a student from 1992-1995 joined us as an assistant teacher. Julie graduated from Cornell University in 2012 with a BA in Theater Arts and English. While at Cornell she was a member of an a capella group. She also directed a Shakespeare summer camp for kids with cancer, where she worked alongside a drama therapist and developed an interest in drama therapy. In addition to her work at Union Temple Preschool, Julie is pursuing an acting career. She is a member of a Shakespeare company, Theatre Under the Stars, in New Hampshire. She will be returning there this summer. Julie is currently appearing in Yentl at the Heights Players in Brooklyn Heights, where she is reprising the role of Haddas, the female lead who marries Yentl. In her spare time Julie enjoys Zumba classes and yoga. She also takes a Broadway dance class with her grandmother. Julie is a cinephile and enjoys Indie films and literary dramas. Her favorite part of the school day at Union Temple Preschool is the first thing in the morning when the children arrive. "They are so excited which is very unlike most other jobs." She loves the work environment at Union Temple Preschool. "Everyone loves to be there. In less than one year I have learned so much from Alex Beers, my head teacher. The way she deals with kids is so amazing. Her communication is so effective and compassionate". Julie's family are long time Temple members. Her mother, Stacey Chanin, was a member of the Preschool Committee for many years and started our swim program. We are so happy to have Julie here with us. -Susan Sporer, Preschool Director
Sisterhood
It's May, the month when we honor mothers, the women who are at the center of family life and usually the first called upon to respond to emergencies. It is also our month of Iyar, the month of healing. On Sunday, May 4, 2014, at 10 A.M., Sisterhood will be celebrating both mothers and healing with a festive Rosh Chodesh Iyar, at which our own Faye White-Willinger, R.N., will discuss the essentials of first aid with us and demonstrate CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). Don't miss this important and exciting program. Bring your friends and your appetite, for, as always, there will be delicacies galore to tempt and delight you. Now, take out your pen and put a big circle around Sunday, June 1, on your calendar. That's the day we'll be having our gala final program of the season. So be with us at 10 AM as we celebrate Rosh Chodesh Sivan and discuss the love story of a Jewish marriage, Between Two Eternities by Barbara Brett. Originally published by Avon to a rave review in Publisher Weekly, the novel has recently been re-issued as an e-book and paperback and is available on-line. Full disclosure: I'm the author, and I'd love to hear your thoughts about the book and the eternal and tragic life problem it explores. Haven't read the book? Not to worry. You are sure to have a lot to add once the discussion gets going. And you certainly won't want to miss Sisterhood's traditional, mouthwatering, end-of-season brunch and exciting mystery raffle. Well also be holding our annual election, and we hope that youll want to submit your name or nominate someone as an officer or member of the board. Please e-mail your suggestions to one of our current copresidents, Susanne Singer (ssinger423@verizon.net) or Linda Simka (lesterditz@yahoo.com). Youll find that working with Sisterhood and helping us to fulfill our goal of tikkun olam is both satisfying and fulfilling. -Barbara Brett, Secretary
