Brent Thomas, new dean of ESU College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
EMPORIA, KAN. The new dean of Emporia State Universitys College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is excited to explore new opportunities to collaborate for the benefit of the entire university. Dr. R. Brent Thomas was named as the new dean today by Dr. David Cordle, provost and vice president for academic affairs. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is truly the heart of the university, and the dean position in LA&S is one of ESUs most important leadership roles, said Cordle. Its gratifying that after a thorough national search, the best choice for the dean appointment turns out to be someone we already know and admire. Brent Thomas has demonstrated great leadership as chair of the Department of Biological Sciences. He is now ready and fully prepared to build upon Marie Millers work as Emporia States arts & sciences dean. Said Thomas: Our College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has both a distinguished history and a very bright future. I look forward to working collaboratively to build upon our unique strengths and exploring new opportunities. Thomas, who will become dean on June 8, already has identified his first order of business, finding a new chair for the Department of Biological Sciences, the position Thomas has filled since December 2008, two years after he began teaching at Emporia State University. During Thomas tenure as department chair, several notable accomplishments happened: The department collaborated with the Emporia Recreation Center to create a summer biology/science camp for youths, age seven to 11; A human cadaver laboratory was created; and A new masters degree in forensic science was estab-

MH to host blood drive

Arkansas Blood Institute (ABI) and Mulberry High School are teaming up to save the lives of those in local hospitals. A blood drive will take place on Monday, May 5, between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Anyone who is healthy and 16 years or older is urged to attend and donate. Each donor will receive a Feel Bold T-shirt, free health screenings and Donor Rewards Points. Blood donors can choose to forgo the Tshirt. Then, funds designated for this item will be contributed to Global Blood Fund, a State University in Starkville. He taught for seven years at the University of South Carolina Upstate before joining the Emporia State faculty in 2006. At Emporia State, he serves on the Retention Action Team and is a faculty champion for the Biological Sciences Departmental Enhancement Fund and the mens and womens track and cross-county teams. Thomas and his wife, the former Stephanie Schaffer of Ozark, live in Emporia with their two children, Allie and Nicholas. Thomas has served on the site council of Village Elementary School and provided presentations on reptiles and amphibians to youth and civic groups. His hobbies include running slowly, camping and anything outdoors that involves wildlife. nonprofit that supports struggling blood centers abroad. Donors with ABI provide every drop of blood needed by patients in 15 hospitals in western and south central Arkansas. One in every seven people entering a hospital will need blood. There is no substitute for human blood, and it has a limited time for use. Each donation can save as many as three lives. However, of those eligible to donate blood in the U.S., only about ten percent actually do. Donations can be made every 56 days. Appointments to donate are not required but can be made by calling 877340-8777 or visiting arkbi.org.

lished. Department faculty and university officials worked closely with the directors of all the major forensic crime labs in Kansas and the Kansas City metropolitan area to develop the curriculum and program requirements. The program gained approval from the Kansas Board of Regents last week. For Thomas, these achievements for the Department of Biological Sciences are a model of great things that can happen throughout the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which includes 11 academic departments. The Colleges strong reputation of providing students with opportunities to work side by side with outstanding faculty members both in and beyond the classroom is one of the characteristics that attracted me to Emporia State University, Thomas said. I believe that the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will play a critical role in the fulfillment of both the mission and the strategic vision of the larger university. Thomas grew up in Denning and is the son of Norman and Joyce Thomas, now of Ozark. A 1987 graduate of Altus Denning High School, he earned his bachelors degree in biology at University of the Ozarks in Clarksville; his masters degree in biology from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield; and his Ph.D. in biological sciences from Mississippi

Bobby Dale and Debbie, Joy Mitchell, Roy and Jonetta, Mike and Debbie and I went out to eat at a local restaurant on Friday night to celebrate Roy and Debbies (Mike) birthdays which were in April. We had a good time. I enjoyed going out to eat with the TOPS club members on Thursday night. The Union meeting of the Kings River Association was held this past weekend with Richland Church at Mount Olive. The other churches dismissed their services on Sunday. The meeting started on Friday and ended on Sunday with meals being served at each service. My sister, Janelle, called me and said they had good preaching and singing. The meeting was well attended. I was not able to attend, but was glad to hear it went well. The Association will be held the first weekend in October. I am finishing my news this Monday morning. The storms did come with tornadoes in eastern Arkansas and a couple in Oklahoma and Kansas. My sympathy goes out to those that lost loved ones.
