This document will define the word leachate, it can form any time water touches another object, though it most commonly originates from rain. It can also occur if material is deposited into a river or lake; the water will breakdown the waste and carries its properties through its course. Leachate is formed most rapidly when the material it contacts is decomposing.

Technical Discretion.6 This document is describing the word leachate. Leachate is liquid that extracts solutes from other matter as it passes through it. In an environmental sense, leachate most commonly refers to water acquiring properties from the refuse that it contacts.

DEFINITION OF LEACHATE

The technical term from the dictionary is a solution resulting from leaching, as of soluble constituents from soil, landfill, etc., by downward percolating ground water: Leachates in the town's water supply have been traced to a chemical-waste dump.

Leachate can form any time water touches another object, picking up contaminants such as dirty soil or hazardous material, most commonly originates from rain. It can also occur if material is deposited into a river or lake, when water breaks down the waste and carries the properties through its course. Leachate is formed most rapidly when the material it comes in contact with is decomposing. Any material can combine with water to form leachate. Leachate is only dangerous when the bonding material is hazardous, such as chemical waste. For instance, if water ran over a slice of orange, it would be leachate, but not dangerous. However, if a pile of batteries is in the landfills garbage heap, the acid from the batteries could form hazardous leachate, when contacted by water or rain fall. When water percolates through the waste, it promotes and assists the process of decomposition by bacteria and fungi. These processes will release by-products that rapidly use up any available oxygen creating an anoxic environment, that cause global warming.

Leachate is generated in landfills; the first landfill was named Fresno Municipal Sanitary Landfill and originated in Fresno, California in 1937, it is considered to have been the first modern,
sanitary landfill in the United States. There are many components to the collection system including pumps, manholes, discharge lines and liquid level monitors , using the techniques of trenching, compacting, and the daily covering of waste with soil. Trash that consists of everyday items people use and then throw away, such as product packaging, grass clippings, furniture, clothing, bottles, food scraps and papers. In 2010, Americans generated around 250 million tons of trash, making who knows how much contaminated Leachate.

Most landfills will direct fallen rain through sloped terrain or use a series of perforated pipes that feed the leachate to a pond lined of clay or a synthetic flexible membrane, one or more layers deep, where it can be treated as waste water. The liner effectively creates a bathtub in the ground. The water volume and quality of the leachate extremely vary depending on rainfall and the quality of land-fill. Because leachate drags with it physical properties, it is problematic for pipes, frequently clogging them. Alternatively, some landfills will employ a covering system that functions much like a large umbrella, in order to prevent leachate from forming. The cover, however, is constantly threatened by the rodents and snakes housed in most landfills, as well as the beating it takes from hail, rain, and snow, all of which greatly limit its effectiveness. If municipal solid waste is gets into ground water, or if leachate is allowed to drain directly into surface water, severe damage can accrue to the water quality. If the bottom liner fails, wastes will migrate directly into the environment and into the groundwater. It is mandatory for landfills to protect against leachate seepage into the environment, but sadly it happens

frequently and is extremely hard to monitor.

Description of Leachate
Leachate; is a liquid generated in landfills, created when water seeps into and through the waste, as the water contacts the waste material, It seeps to the bottom of a landfill and is collected by a system of pipes. The bottom of the landfill is sloped with pipes laid along the bottom capturing contaminated water and other fluid, feed to a pond lined of clay or a synthetic flexible membrane, one or more layers deep. As the waste accumulates it can clog up from silt or mud or growth of microorganisms in the pipes. These pipes can become weak from the acids, solvents, oxidizing agents, chemical used in breaking down the waste. The pumped leachate is treated at a wastewater treatment plant it dissolves part of the organic and inorganic matter contained in the landfill from chemicals or toxic materials from industrial activities such as factories, mines or storage sites that go through solids and any other industrial waste that is commonly associated with stockpiled coal and waste materials from metal ore from mining and other rock extraction processes. Landfill ponds are in affective to keep the waste contained, with animals and weather destroying the barriers of the pond. Leachate is a common term in the Civil/Environmental Engineering, when dealing with wastes from land fills where it can be environmentally harmful to the public, being toxic to nature, getting contaminants into the groundwater and surface water of the local community. The Engineers create new ways to contain the harmful leachate for a safer way of life. We will always have trash building up, we need those engineers to affectively create a better tomorrow.

Abstract
Environmental Engineers deal with chemical, biological and thermal waste in the environments water, air and soil. A good environmental engineer can find the hazards through chemical and mathematical testing using critical thinking to find a technical solution. Environmental Engineer should care about the earths wellbeing from the air that we breathe to the water we drink, leaving a better and safer place than how they found it. You will need a bachelors degree in engineering to be able to test the contaminates, of the environment, that youll come across day to day, and to think critically to solve technical problems. Environmental Engineers will most likely talk with the property owners and large companys looking for the results of the contaminants. Environmental engineers have a responsibility to make the environment a better place than how they found it.

Introduction
Environmental Engineer, are critcal thinkers that, use Math, chemestry, biology, and technology to sovle the globes environmental issues that man has created. It is important to have this type of engineer for the simple fact that we need to breath clean air, drink clean water and have recyceling mothods for all the resources humans eat up. The globe needs Environmental Engineers to make a better world. Through the search of genereal information on Environmental Engineering I have found legitamite sources talking about what an Environmental Engineer does for a living, in order to do research for incoming college students looking into this field of engineering.

I laid out the discussion in information that I had found with a mission statement, and talking about the genaral life of an Environmental Engineer.

Methodology
I just realized that I wanted to become an Enviromnemtal Engineer this year. Through this research that Ive conducted, Ive come to realize that I love the career path of an engineer even more. I want to make a positive impact on the world, making it a better place than I had found it. Therere so many positive things that come from being an Environmemtal Engineer. Empirical evidance for this report was an interview with a Mechanical Engineer, Mike Collins with CCI. Print evidence for this report is a mission statement from UCLA from their Civil and Environmental Engineering site. Electronic evidence for this reprot includes information Youtube videos from Environmental Engineer- Profiles of Scientist and Engineers. Discussion

Mission Statement
An Environment Engineers mission is to use the principals of biology and chemistry to develop solutions for global issues in the environment that have arisen from recklessness of others financial gains, leaving behind hazardous conditions. Environmental Engineers create new world solutions to enhance the worlds water, air pollution control, waste disposal, recycling, forestation, and public health issues for a better tomorrow. They need to be organized, be creative problem solvers, great communicators, and be able to provide simple solutions for the issues that theyll face.
