Date: February 3, 2014 To: Steffen Guenzel From: Maria Brawne Subject of my paper: Ethics Purpose: My major is Biomedical

Sciences and with a degree in this area I hope to pursue an education at a 4-year medical school with the hopes of someday becoming a physician. Of which area of medicine I would work or take the most interest in, is still unclear to me, which is why this research question will look at a major point and sometimes controversial facet of medicine and that is the ethics behind the practice. Preliminary Thesis/Argument: As research and technology in medicine continue to further human knowledge in the field and many factors that make up health and wellness change on daily basis, there remains one constant: ethics. However, with the ethical and moral side of medicine, just like anything else, there is overwhelming amount of controversy. This paper will address different areas of controversy such as end of life care, abortion and cell research and testing, in an attempt to not only better understand but also declare which side of the moral standard complies most with what hard scientific fact back-up. Intended audience: The intended audience would be students, my peers, also in this field who worry about their development of their ethical standard and interpretation of a doctors oath to help, as well as the general public. Surely both of these can benefit from exploration of this topic in that developing a better sense of the role of ethics in medicine could increase ones understanding of the entire field. Types of research areas: At this point, I can confirm that I will work with both scholarly and internet research, however Ive yet to find someone in medicine that I can thoroughly discuss ethical issues in health. Kinds of sources I will use and why they will benefit my paper: The goal at this point is to develop a varied repertoire of sources ranging from primary to secondary, internet and scholarly and perhaps some firsthand accounts of individuals, found on online video journals and/ or documentaries, which had issues in medicine with serious ethical implications. These sources will benefit my paper by providing information straight from the source and from accounts that detail the root issues behind ethics in medicine.
