CHAPTER 27
INTRODUCTION "e begin the final sections of the boo! with this chapter. $his chapter before s is the introd ction to the section that deals with the blessings and c rsing that ;oses wants them to read alo d as a nation. He wants them to do this well after his own death( once they stand in the land itself. )t is the faith of ;oses that is e%pressed in the things we read here. He believed that they wo ld win the land and he wanted them to stand in it and affirm the tr th that he records here and in the ne%t chapters. He wanted them to dramatically affirm the Law alo d when they arrived in the land and call pon themselves twelve great c rses if they disobey the commands of the Lord. $his first section( recorded here( is a s mmary of the blessings and c rses that will be e%panded in s bseG ent chapters .27?0>:. He reG ests them to stand pon two mo ntains and sho t alo d their amen to each of these twelve s mmary c rses( as the Levites read them alo d. $he f ller blessings and c rses teaching will also be read alo d by the two gro ps and the Levites. )t will be a final reinforcement of the doctrinal tr ths behind the forty years of ;oses teaching ministry. CHAPTER 33
INTRODUCTION @efore he heads p the mo ntain to die ;oses will give a blessing to the people in the patriarchal manner. $his was written down and copied into the te%t( possibly by &osh a( or more li!ely by one of the Levites who had charge of the man script of the Law at the time. $his becomes the pen ltimate chapter of Ae teronomy and appropriately so. )t is introd ced as an addition to the boo! by the scribe who inserts it. )n the first verse the scribe ma!es observations for later generations on the character and heart of ;oses in his service( and then records the heart of the blessing. Eot every word in the blessing was necessarily recorded( and this may be an abbreviation of what he said( b t ) do not believe .with the liberal commentators: that this is a later invention. $his feels li!e the heart of a real speech of a real man into a sit ation that was niG e( and reG ired a special speech to seal it. ;oses will say ,men to this speech by wal!ing slowly p the hill o t of the sight of the people. "hat we read here is certainly written as if it is a received acco nt from the person who saw it. )f this passage was a simple invention it wo ldnIt need to be as specific as it is made with references to specific places that are impossible to see from that mo ntain. People gra5ed sheep and climbed pon this mo ntain and it wo ld have been well !nown that the things ;oses saw co ldnIt be seen by anyone climbing it later. -rom the words sed we !now that something special is given to ;oses on that mo ntain( and that is why they are recorded for s. $he Lord gives ;oses a special ability to see here( and that is important for the story( for his death is a # dgment( and the LordIs giving him this grace is a wonderf l thing in light of ;oses and ,aronIs sin. E mbers 2>. ;oses dies according to the word of God( E mbers 2=162ff( not by the !iss of God( as the later /abbis arg ed. "e donIt have to invent the concept of a !iss( for the LordIs grace in ;oses death has already been shown by the things he reports he sees. He dies nder # dgment( b t the Lord has ens red that it is a mild # dgment pon this great man( and He ens red he sees all the land before he dies. Even if ;oses had wal!ed across the &ordan with the people he wo ld not have seen as m ch as God clearly has shown him by this description here. $he Lord does something special for ;oses( and this is a bea tif l pict re of dying grace( for the Lord has forgiven him his sin( and his death will have blessing in the midst of it. $he ne%t time we meet ;oses he will be in the land worshipping the ;essiah on the ;o nt of $ransfig ration. ;atthew 6=16?<.
