MAGIC ROADSHOW 143 May, 2013

Well.. this issue may not be on-time, but it's not as late as last months. I'm going to consider that a positive. I still have a lot on my plate, but things are getting better. As you can probably tell, the Roadshow looks a little different. I've always wanted to publish it in a 'template' so it would look a little more professional, regardless of my writing, but the work to both develop and customi e a template and convert the te!t to html was more than I wanted to tackle. I did publish a few of the early Roadshows in html, but they were very short in length. I'm not trained in html, css, style sheets, etcs... and it's slow going. "verything is strictly 'learn as I go', so bear with me. If something looks 'funny' in your browser, let me know. I've checked it in Windows and #hrome... $pring is officially here.. We've had over four inches of rain the past couple of days, but I'm not complaining. %ou never know what $ummer may bring. I'm a cold weather guy. $ummer makes me want to sit inside with the air conditioning and work on pro&ects I neglected during the Winter. I'm working on another book at the moment and I'm about thirty pages in.. 'ore on this later. $peaking of books.. download the 'ental'agic ebook in the left navbar. I've e!panded it to about three times it's previous length, and hope to e!pand it more as time allows. (ook for a series of interviews with some genuine nice and highly talented folks. I have four in the works and will publish one in each of the ne!t four issues. I will tell you this.. one is with my #alifornia friend, )avid *eubauer, who, in addition to being an ama ing close-up magician, routinely works with stars and belongs to the actors guild. Another is with +aya ,arker, who has been on the cover of ,enthouse eight times and is currently starring in '#enterfolds of 'agic' at the ,la a -otel . #asino showroom in (as /egas. )id I mention she is the former winner of 'Rock of (ove' and 0rett 'ichaels girlfriend1 A third is with Ivan Amodei, who is masterful in his show 'Intimate Illusions' at the 0everly Wilshire -otel on Rodeo )rive in 0everly -ills. -e will soon perform his 233th show. I'm not going into details yet, but they have represented the likes of $igfred . Roy and (ance 0urton.. to name a couple. If you have a :uestion;s< you'd like answered by a top publicist, send it to me and pass it on to *atalie... I have to take a moment to wish one of my regular readers, (eRoy, my heartfelt sympathies. (eRoy wrote to thank me for publishing the Roadshow on the internet, as opposed to sending out a hard copy which he would be unable to read as he is suffering from 'ysophobia ;from =reek musos, >uncleanness> and phobos, >fear>?< which is a pathological fear of contamination and germs... 9uch@ 9n another note.. according to A4act-ive > +here are more than 5,233 species of bacteria living in your belly button...> -ave a =ood )ay @

And whenever possible, we tried not to cut away in the middle of the trick. We wanted the movie-going e!perience to be as close as possible to the e!perience of watching live magic. "arly in the movie was a street performing scene. +his scene was supposed to establish our lead female character, $tacy )iet ;played by /alerie )illman<, as an edgy, se!y street magician. We wanted it to feel like a routine and not &ust a couple of tricks strung together. Also, /alerie is not really a magician, so we wanted tricks that would be relatively easy to learn ;although other times in the movie, she performs some very challenging sleight of hand magic<. We started thinking about the needle through arm. I'm not sure of the origin of this trick, but of course -arry Anderson made it famous. 0ut we wanted to put a spin on the trick, to make it more suited to an edgy female magician. We considered doing a needle through breast, but we decided that was going too far in the raunchy department. Also, we were shooting in a public farmer's market, and there could be children walking by. We decided to do needle through stomach. We felt this had the right mi! of se!iness and edginess, and might be the kind of trick a street magician would perform. We had her start out with a needle through balloon so that the routine would build, starting with the kid friendly balloon trick, and then escalating into the more dangerous looking stomach trick. As most of you know, the needle through arm is accomplished with rubber cement. %ou apply rubber cement, and then s:uee e the skin together making a small tunnel for the needle to pass through. +he challenge with /alerie's stomach was she was a bit too thin, and there wasn't a lot of skin to push together. When she would try to push the needle through, the rubber cement would separate, and the needle would pop out. We solved this problem by taking a small drink stirrer ;a tiny straw< and cutting it in half. We would use the rubber cement to pinch her stomach skin around the stirrer. *ow the needle had a very easy path to go through. +o help prevent detection, we also applied flesh colored nail polish to the drink stirrer, and flesh colored makeup powder. 9nce the stirrer was securely in there, we applied additional makeup to her stomach to cover up any telltale line or crease.

-er shirt covered her stomach as she performed the needle through balloon ending with popping the balloon. $he then removed the yarn from the needle, and used the long needle-through-balloon needle ;as opposed to the shorter needle-through-arm needle<. $he lifted her shirt, pushed the needle through her stomach going right through the drink stirrer tunnel, and out the other side. As she held the needle high in the air for applause, she allowed her bunched up shirt to fall :uickly covering her stomach to eliminate the possibility of detection. *ow without resetting she was able to move on to the ne!t trick. )esperate Acts of 'agic will be playing at the Ruad #inema in *%# from 'ay G-C. +ickets can be purchased at http788www.movietickets.com8houseOdetail.asp1 houseOidPM5E.rdatePLSM4GSM4M35G.sortidP5 It will also be playing in (os Angeles at the (aemmle *o-o D from 'ay 53-5E. +ickets can be purchased at https788www.laemmle.com8viewtheatre.php1dateP3L53M35G.thidPMM +o bring the movie to your city or magic club, you can host a screening with +ugg.com. +his doesnIt cost anything. %ou donIt need a venue or a screen. +ugg finds you a local movie theatre, and if enough people buy tickets, the screening happens. I immediately contracted a bug that basically shut my computer down. Although I still had control of the mouse, I couldn't access my homepage, couldn't visit sites, and couldn't access my virus program to do anything about it.. I took my computer to a local technician, paid him [6L.33, and he got rid of the nasty little bug for me. When I got my machine home and cranked it up I noticed an addition to my desktop. It was an icon for a program called 'alwarebytes Anti-'alware. ; I'm assuming he would normally remove 'alwarebytes before returning the computer.< After checking the 'vault', I found the virus the tech told me had infected my computer. With a little more checking, I found that 'alwarebytes is a 533S free download that is commonly used by technicians to clean machines brought in with various maladies. ,# 'aga ine has this to say about 'alwarebytes... >$cored better than A(( free or commercial competition in my malware removal test. *o problems at all with installation. It does not run in the background, ;which can be a good thing if your computer is a little slow<, and you cannot schedule it to perform scans. It is strictly an 'on demand' scanner, which is perfectly 9T with me. Whenever I suspect my machine needs a good cleaning I click the icon, click either 'Ruick $can' or '4ull $can', and let it do it's thing.. I've been using it regularly for over two years now, and it has saved me several hundred dollars in tech fees..

+here is a commercial version, but the primary difference between it and the free version is the pro version does run in real time and can be scheduled.
