Satirical Devices Summarizing the Text In writing my satirical essay on Flannery OConnors, A Good Man Is Hard To Find, I used the Horatian form of satire, accompanied by situational irony, knaves and fools, grotesque, and finally mock encomium as the devices. I used the Horatian format because of the grandmother, and how we see how many witty ways to display her actions perilous behavior. A somewhat manipulative outcast in her own family, she was a very opinionated and pretentious old lady who was stuck in her ways. Situational irony is fundamental blueprint from the very beginning of the story. The family is getting ready to take a trip to Florida, and the she would rather go to Tennessee, so she comes up with an elaborate lie and takes them off course. In the events of the lie, the family gets into an accident, and then comes face to face with a fellow that calls himself the Misfit, the irony here is the discrepancy between purpose and result. This leads us to the knaves & fools device, with all of the other family members dead, having been killed by the Misfit, shes determined by her motives to live, so she pleads to remind the Misfit that he can change or reconnect with what is good, but in return is only bringing herself to a more certain death.
