Slocan Valley Seniors Housing
Stability, outreach, and research into future housing
projects are the key ideas for the newly elected board of
the Slocan Valley Seniors Housing Society.
At a special membership meeting in March following
the resignation of all previous board members, the new
board was acclaimed unanimously, with power to appoint
new directors, and to steer the organization through to its
September AGM. All those elected are part of the original
organizing committee in the 1990s that planned and raised
the funds and community support to build Passmore
Lodge: president Rita Moir, vice-president Lydia Kania,
treasurer Eric Clough, and secretary Sally Mackenzie. Tey
have since appointed Mabel Kabatof and Willie Harase-
mow, who have also served previously on the board.
At the March special meeting, BC Housing regional dir-
ector Ann Howard addressed the difculties and conficts
of interest that can arise when tenants sit on the board.
Te special meeting was chaired by Andrew Jarrett, who
has worked with many non-proft societies in the Koo-
tenays. Rather than fractious, the meeting was calm and
thoughtful, with tenants and community members con-
tributing their hopes for the future.
Te new board has met weekly, with briefngs on ad-
ministration, grounds and gardens, maintenance and
bookkeeping. Te board is also resuming its research
into future seniors housing and working toward full rep-
resentation at the September annual meeting.
Te society recently received increased public support
(through Dot Day) for its yoga, exercise, and art therapy
programs; for the frst time since 2008, Passmore Lodges
beautiful gardens and grounds will be a site on this years
Garden Tour taking place on June 29, and the society
will have an information booth at the upcoming Winlaw
Water Day, May 3.

Closure
In consultation with BC Conserv-
ation Of cer Service, regional bear
biologists and the Ministry of For-
ests, Lands and Natural Resource
Operations, the Regional District of
Central Kootenay (RDCK) is initi-
ating an annual spring closure for a
portion of the Nelson-Salmo Great
Northern Trail. It is felt that an an-
nual closure will help ensure pub-
lic safety and beneft the local bear
population from over exposure.
Te annual closure will include
the trail south of Cottonwood
Lake parking area to Hall Siding.
Te closure will begin from April
22 until June 15. Signs will be
posted accordingly at the entrance
to trail closures.
Collared bear data has shown
the area from Cottonwood Lake to
Hall siding, particularly the areas of
Apex and Camp Busk, are heavily
used by grizzly bears in the spring.
Te bears use this area because of its
high valued forage habitat. In most
cases the bears move on to higher
elevations by the middle of June.
As black bear and grizzly bear ac-
tivity is common in the spring and
early summer, bears may be present
on the trail system throughout the
year so please remember to always
use caution, do not attempt to view
or approach bears, and do not leave
garbage or food on trails. Please re-
spect all closures.
