DEVELOPER'S CORNER
Dear Homeowners, As you are aware, there are areas within Penn National Golf Course Community where feral cats live. These areas are wherever they are being fed. Penn National is a close-knit community where the homes are located in close proximity to one another. As such, if one homeowner feeds the feral cats at their home the cats are then attracted to the neighborhood. These cats will not remain on one property, but will instead freely roam throughout the area. Many homeowners do not want these cats on their property, and some have complained to our office. Cats that are born into the wild and have wild parents are wild animals. They are not pets. What problems do feral cats cause? 1. Noise. Their frequent fighting and yowling is quite disruptive. 2. Conflict with pets. They will steal pet food and may even threaten or harm a beloved pet. 3. Spraying. Males will mark their territory with a musky, sticky substance that they secrete and spray. The odor is long lasting and offensive. 4. Health risks. A sick or injured feral cat will probably never receive medical treatment. They can carry rabies, ringworm, toxoplasmosis, feline distemper, and a host of other illnesses and bacterial infections that are transmittable to you and your pet. 5. Kittens. Wild populations continue to grow because they are, for the most part, not spayed or neutered. Kittens are cute, but they grow up to be just as wild as their mothers. A single female cat can begin having kittens as young as five months. She can have three litters a year with an average litter of four to six kittens. So, in one year a cat can produce 12 to 18 kittens. Those cats can begin having kittens in five months. 6. Roaming the neighborhood. They get around, and their constant presence can be annoying, not to mention dangerous, especially when children and pets are present. Some people are allergic to cats and having them on their outdoor furniture can cause health complications. 7. Threaten birds and fish. They can decimate a local songbird or game bird population, which is a real loss to the people who feed and enjoy them. They can also wipe out backyard pond fish. 8. Digging. They dig and leave messes in yards and gardens. 9. Scratching. Not only is there the danger of a person being scratched, but also property. They can scratch up fabric items such as lawn furniture, tents, laundry, etc. 10. Inviting Unwanted Critters. When you feed feral cats, you run the risk of inviting other animals into your yard. As Penn National is located in the beautiful countryside, other wild animals still live in the surrounding habitat. By leaving food outside you invite skunks, opossums, raccoons and coyotes to dine at your home as well. These animals carry disease and risk to human and pet populations.

Please be considerate of your neighbors and do not attract feral cats to your property.

Thank you, Patti Nitterhouse Vice President, White Rock Inc.
