Running head: VIEWS OF DEATH

In the famous lyrical poem written by, Dylan Thomas, Do not go gentle into that good night and the elegy free verse poem Because I could not stop for Death written by, Emily Dickinson, have many similarities in theme yet, have differences in the plots. The three aspects found relate-able between the two poems include, point of view, conflict and symbolism.

The point of views are completely different with in these two poems. The Do not go gentle into that good night poem is narrated by the son of the dyeing father. The Because I could not stop for Death poem is written in first person with the woman that died as the voice. The tone in the Dylan Thomas poem is aggressive and urgent with an un-accepting sense of reality. The tone is relaxed with a peaceful feeling in the Emily Dickinson poem. The other difference in the points of view is that the woman has already passed in Emilys poem and the man in the poem by Dylan has yet to pass but is inevitable going to die.

The conflict at hand is Death. Each poem has a theme of death as the general subject. Death is presented in the form of a gentlemen suitor and is un-realized at first in the poem written by Dickinsons. In the Thomas poem death is something expected as an old man ages and the dying of the light goes out. The difference between these two poems is the speaker and the sense of acceptance with deaths arrival. The Father does have the understanding of his time being up and the son is denying the fact that its his

that she has passes, yet, seems to have a hard time understanding how it all happened.

The symbolism is huge like it is in most poems. In Dickinson's poem the feeling that horse heads pointed toward "Eternity" or, in other words, signaled the passage from life to death. The clothing that the woman was wearing as the sun set, suggest that she was unaware of her date for death. I also think that the description of the gown For only gossamer my gown, My tippet only tulle suggest that her death took place on her wedding day. The symbolism in Do not go gentle into that good night was less vivid and displayed with emotional feeling that describe the moment. The reoccurring statement of Rage, rage against the dying of the light is the creator of all feeling in this poem.

In conclusion, death is something that we all have to face during our lives weather it is a family member, friend, or our selves. Everyone has the right to address it the way they see fit. Morals and views on quality of life are spread out with different outlooks on life and how to handle each specific situation. These poems give me a sense of when it is realized that death is present then a sense of acceptance is realized by the person being taken by the reaper. A calmness is about the ones that are passing and a sense of discomfort and difficult understanding is dropped on the shoulders of the loved ones to bare.
