Du!leD 9.+nnels
Si5!leD Operation is used in ship to ship communication using
frequency; each, person needs to say "over" and release the PUSH TO
TALK button before they can receive.
Du!leD Using paired working frequencies i.e. transmission and
reception are simultaneous , using two different frequencies so that it is
just like an ordinary telephone call , used in ship- shore communications
8. Give 0et+ils on t.e 1un9tion +n0 use o1 ,LA>IFIE> AFINE TUNE 6
9ontrol -
When the reception of speech is distorted the frequency is higher/lower
and the pitch of the received voice signal is wrong. When this occurs one
needs to push the J,LA>IFYK
button allowing you to modify the frequency so as to receive a clean signal
9. Give 0et+ils on !ur!ose +n0 9orre9tl3 +0Hust AF /+in A=olu5e6
The AF ( Audio Frequency ) gain control on an MF/HF transceiver is
also known as the Volume. This controls
the volume of the sound coming from the
speakers and has no effect on transmissions
Varies the amount of signal passing through the loud speaker .
l0. Give 0et+ils on !ur!ose +n0 9orre9tl3 +0Hust >F /+in ASensitivit36
The RF ( Radio Frequency ) gain control , sometimes called the
sensitive control , is used to adjust the amplification (strength) of
incoming Radio frequency signals.
Allows manual adjustment of the input amplifier so as to set up the gain to suit conditions .
ll. Give 0et+ils on !ur!ose o1 t.e AG,
The AGC ( Automatic Gain Control ) automatically increases weak RF
signals or reduces strong RF signals
compensating for fading and producing a steady AF output
Taking over manual control i.e. the AGC holds the output at a nearly constant level even
though the input may fluctuate widely

OFF LOAD To determine the condition of a lead acid battery , the
main and all transmitters should be switched off and take the
voltage readings. A fully charged bank of lead acid cells
should have an off load reading of 24v
ON LOAD Switch on all equipment and choose the MF / HF
Transmitters and by pressing the PTT switch note voltage
reading this should not fall more than one or two volts not , that
is not less than 22 Volts
A fully charged bank of batteries used under the same
load conditions would read 23 to 23.5 V
Trickle charge - Slow charge
Boost charge - Fast charge
Maintaining battery electrolyte levels
(Battery manufacturer recommended fill level , l/8 " above plate , do
not fill to top, to allow space when charging (fill with distilled )
Always use distilled water.
Battery corrosion is a symptom of over filling
Warped or cracked cell covers
Keep battery terminals greased
See that battery terminals are well tightened
Keep batteries charged

The essential purpose of an EPlRB is to help determine the position of
survivors during SAR operations
The EPlRB signal indicates that one or more persons are in distress ,
that they are no longer on board the ship and that receiving facilities
may no longer be available .
EPlRBS should be checked at monthly intervals

These are used to move SAR units to the exact position of a person in
distress.
They operate on the 9GHz band ( 9.3.GHz to 9.5GHz) band and on it
transmit, assuming they are switched on when interrogated by another
radar
Another type of SART AlS SART 20l0
96 hours Stand by - 8 hours switched on
5 W
Correct procedure for routine test checks
SART should be tested on a monthly intervals
Check that there are no ships in area
Never check a SART in harbour
Switch SART to Test mode
Hold SART in view of radar antenna
Check that visual indicator light operates
Check that audible beeper operates
Obserer radar display - concentric circles should be displayed
Check battery expiry date
Check humidity meter if provided
Check for any cracks
lf there are two SARTS one is kept in the bridge the other SART is kept
ln the freefall life boat or both in bridge on Port and Starboard (inside)
