If truth be told, were already getting a little tired of The Year Of Homecoming and it hasnt even really got underway yet. Whats needed is something to reinvigorate our emotions and fortunately thats happening at INVERNESS MUSEUM & ART GALLERY in the form of NEEDED ON A JOURNEY, running until 10 MAY. The exhibition brings together historic pieces and contemporary creations that evoke journeys from and to our region, throughout Scotland and across the world. It explores the essential elements of culture music, tradition, language, lore and craft that people bring with them to express their identity and to make home from home. In addition to using High Life Highlands collections to illustrate three centuries of journeying, the exhibition includes two new creations. The Homecoming Quilt, created by over 200 quilters across the region and the Inverness Storymap, populated with images of traditions, memories and histories collected from local community members. One reason thats always going to draw people back to the Highlands is the breathtaking landscape and thats showcased rather beautifully in DRAWN TO THE WEST, a new exhibition at the LOCH TORRIDON CENTRE GALLERY, running until August. Bringing together a whole range of local artists, its the perfect excuse for making the journey to one of the most glorious areas of the Highlands. And, of course, showing your support for a gallery set in a building thats a focal point for the local community and visitors alike. For hours etc call 01445 791361. Closer to home, youll notice throughout this issue, the plethora of events taking place as part of the HAPPYNESS comedy festival, running from 2225 MAY. One such is STEVE ULLATHORNES ANNUAL PHOTO FEST [1] at EDEN COURT. In which the award winning photographer presents a rather splendid selection of live and studio photographs of comedians, actors, singers, and cabaret artists from all corners of the world. Well worth checking out if youre heading along to the venue to see the stand-ups in the esh.. more at: whatsonhighlands.com

This is the second time John has shared an exhibition with his daughter Biddy. In Biddy Nicholsons latest body of work, she continues to explore Scotlands varied landscapes and ever changing seascapes. She lives on the Fife coast and does a lot of drawing and painting locally, but the West Coast is still a major inspiration and in particular the area around Arisaig. COMEDY DOCUMENTARY DRAMA FAMILY ROMANCE
We Are Weird
There must be something in the water this month cos at times itll feel like youre tripping as big stars and unlikely names are crammed into all manner of downright peculiar enterprises, some of which might actually turn out to be rather brilliant. Take FRANK [1] for example. Inspired by Manchester musician Chris Sieveys creation Frank Sidebottom - a man who spoke with a strange comic voice and wore a giant head - is an unlikely vehicle for MICHAEL FASSBENDER, but the movie, written by Jon Ronson (who played keyboards in Sidebottoms band) and co-starring MAGGIE GYLLENHALL and DOMHNALL GLEESON, has been a huge hit at the lm festivals. And Fassbender in the title role is a thing of wonder. More music in THE PUNK SINGER docu about riot grrrl luminary Kathleen Hanna nicely conterpointed by hot indie Swedish lm WE ARE THE BEST! [2] Its back at Eden Court from 0915 May having impressed at the Inverness Film Festival, telling a touchingly entertaining yarn about a bunch of schoolkids in 80s Stockholm who form an all-girl punk band. A little gem. Another unlikely line-up in FADING GIGOLO [3], written, directed and starring the excellent JOHN TURTURRO. This one has JT setting himself up as a Don Juan to get money for his pal, played by none other than WOODY ALLEN. Modern Familys Gloria (Soa Vergara) co-stars along with the underrated SHARON STONE, and VANESSA PARADIS. A month isnt legally allowed to go by without some sort of superhero ick in which CGI and explosions precede a st ght in front of crumbling buildings. This months is X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST which will excite X-fans in a time-defying way. Busy MR FASSBENDER is back, joined by the usual suspects, MCKELLEN, STEWART, JENNIFER LAWRENCE, ELLEN PAGE and JAMES MCAVOY - the next installment is already planned, so do keep up... Perhaps more rewarding will be GODZILLA - with a monster (arf) cast - inc BRYAN CRANSTON, AARON TAYLOR-JOHNSON, ELIZABETH OLSEN, JULIETTE BINOCHE and DAVID STRATHAIRN. Directed by Brit Gareth Edwards whose low-budget Monsters was well-received, it might just launch him onto a new plane. Another Brit, Paul W.S. Anderson, is also rebooting an old yarn with POMPEII, cramming a love story into all the volcano hoo hah. Hes been responsible for endless sequels to Death Race and Resident Evil, so dont expect nuance to be high on his agenda. What else? Deep breath: Family Guy creator Seth Macfarlanes A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST, the marvellous pairing of KRISTEN SCOTT THOMAS and DANIEL AUTEUIL in BEFORE THE WINTER CHILL [4], Angelina Jolie in the long-awaited MALEFICENT, telling the back story of the evil queen from Sleeping Beauty with the aid of SHARLTO COPLEY, ELLE FANNING, SAM RILEY, IMELDA STAUNTON, JUNO TEMPLE and LESLEY MANVILLE, plus new efforts (that you can sniff out in the listings >>) from Arnie, Cruise, Lohan, Hayao Miyazaki, two with Oscar Isaac, and, erm, Postman Pat You know what? Forget all that. Just make sure you get along to the Inverness Film Fans GERARD DEPARDIEU SEASON at EDEN COURT with JEAN DE FLORETTE (13 MAY), MANON DES SOURCES (20 MAY) and BON VOYAGE (27 MAY). Thatll see you just ne.

PEACE, who play IRONWORKS on SUN 01 JUN, are a rather splendid indie quartet from the rocknroll not-very-hotbed of Worcester. Having been trumpeted as ones to watch/hear in the BBCs Sound Of 2013 awards, theyre nally condent enough to start creating something truly distinctive and, hopefully, about to shake off all those Maccabees/Foals comparisons. We caught up with drummer DOM BOYCE to nd out what music is inspiring him right now:
I Marvin Gaye Whats Going On He died 30 years ago last month, and his music remains as relevant as it was when it was made. I Mac Demarco Freaking Out The Neighbourhood From the new album 2. Recently got added to my cooking playlist, really nice way to make a Thai green curry. I Jungle The Heat Love everything Ive heard of theirs, really hoping to see them live soon. I Red Hot Chili Peppers The Power Of Equality My girlfriend recently got a dog called Chili, so this ones for her. I Lalo Shifrin Shifting Gears (off the Bullitt lm soundtrack) Bought this soundtrack off a mate the other day and it makes me want to be Steve McQueen.

Now in its tenth year, the event which runs from 911 MAY in the idyllic surroundings on the edge of Loch Broom is tinged with sadness this time round, dedicated to the memory of David Pirnie, one of the festivals earliest supporters who recently passed away. And you sense hed be proud that the organisers have again gathered a sterling line-up including AL KENNEDY, MATTHEW ZAJAC, political commentator IAIN MACWHIRTER [1] and investigative journalist NEIL MACKAY, the latter talking about his powerful rst novel All the Little Guns Went Bang, Bang, Bang. Theres a packed programme, but much of the enjoyment comes from meeting like minded bibliophiles in the local bars and bookshops. More details at ullapoolbookfestival.co.uk
Another well-established event is the INVERNESS BID CLASSIC CAR SHOW [2] on SAT 10 MAY between 11am and 3.30pm, when the streets of the city will be populated with loads of examples of classic automobiles and, for the petrolheads, a few modern vehicles with their bonnets open to reveal gaskets and the like. Seeing the variety of older jalopies you do kind of wonder when gloriously individual creativity disappeared from the car designers armoury. The whole thing is masterminded by Inverness BID - whos aim for the event is to bring people into the City centre, move them to areas they might not normally go to hence bringing economic benet to the traders - whilst creating a rewarding atmosphere for shoppers and visitors. This years event - the sixth to date - will feature close to 100 vehicles, so therell be no shortage of things to look at and lust after. The proceedings are as usual focused on Church St (with the section from Friars Lane to Queensgate closed), High Street, Inglis Street, and Falcon Square. Complimenting the vehicles will be a full days entertainment with musicians, and a variety of street entertainers performing on the above streets. The Event Finale is at 3pm when the Norcon Pipe band will lead the parade of all the vehicles down the High Street.
Wouldnt it be great to go back to the past to experience all those great cars in their heyday? Well, if you want to muse on whether such a journey would be possible, head along to WATERSTONES in the EASTGATE CENTRE on TUE 20 MAY at 7pm for a talk by Dr Francisco Perez-reche, Lecturer in Physics and Life Sciences and Dr Stephan Torre, School of Divinity, History and Philosophy, University of Aberdeen, called THE PHYSICS AND PHILOSOPHY OF TIME TRAVEL [3]. Its the latest in the monthly series of talks under the banner Caf Scientique which invites leading experts to share the latest in scientic research with the public in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, where questions and discussions are encouraged. This being the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, theyre billing this as a tie-in with the TV series which might just attract folk who wouldnt have gone before to what promises to be a stimulating evening. Oh, and theres cake too. Result.

Running is increasingly popular worldwide, nowhere more so than up here with, should you be so inclined, an opportunity almost every week to huff and puff your way through the wall. And one of the most popular is the RACE FOR LIFE which this year takes place on SUN 25 MAY. The 5 & 10K event gives you a chance to show cancer whos boss and youre encouraged to either, run, walk or even dance your way around a course which starts and nishes at Bught Park and takes in Ness Islands. More info at tinyurl.com/ntx7ucn Its not all running though and weve been championing ETAPE LOCH NESS for some months now. The people behind it all are to be loudly cheered for not only realising the potential of a cycle race here, but marketing and organising it so efciently. It even made the cover of Cycling Monthly showing how much its grabbed the attention of the wider cycling world. Its far too late to take part in this years ride on SUN 04 MAY, but if you want to get along and cheer the competitors, theyll be starting and nishing at Eden Court. Take note though, its an early (6.30am) start with them expected back any time between 9.10am and 1pm. For more details, including road closures, go to etapelochness.com WEEKLY CLASSES:

Remarkable to think that just a few short years ago the prospect of experiencing any high LACup ISU M was AM ARDas likely EC NA D than YDE MO C of TEunbroken RABAC sunshine, quality comedy here about as more two hours the only chuckles to be had from directing tourists to non-existent haggis farms or stumbling across suggestively shaped vegetables in the supermarket. Change began with the refurbished Eden Court and building of Ironworks, both bringing well-known stand ups to the Highlands, rst as a trickle and then as a regular stopping point on nationwide tours.

Best of all, theres the HAPPYNESS INVERNESS COMEDY FESTIVAL, now in its third year and rmly established in the calendar as a brilliant opportunity to witness a wide range of funny folk from the famous to the up-and-coming, all on our doorstep. This years event, running from 2225 MAY is the best yet and this time theres an Irish emphasis to proceedings, with appearances from the likes of JASON BYRNE, TOMMY TIERNAN, SEAN HUGHES and PATRICK KIELTY. While you can guarantee that all of the above will be hugely entertaining, theres just as much fun to be had from the host of other stand-ups wholl be descending on the city for the four day extravaganza. People like Happyness repeat offenders FRED MACAULAY, BEC HILL, MICHAEL REDMOND, JARRED CHRISTMAS, STUART MITCHELL, ZOE LYONS and, particularly, PATRICK MONAHAN, as well as rising stars like THE BOY WITH TAPE ON HIS FACE, SCOTT AGNEW, AISLING BEA and ROB DEERING. Events take place throughout Inverness, at EDEN COURT, HOOTANANNY, outdoors in FALCON SQUARE and this year for the rst time at an intimate comedy club at IG:LU in Church Street. And theres something for all ages, with the Falcon Square performances aimed squarely at the kids, while the eagerly awaited Class Clown event aims to unearth budding stand-ups from schools throughout the area. If you fancy getting the best out of the whole shindig, youd be well advised to purchase a special Festival Pass which guarantees the holder a ticket for every show, though you will be expected to stitch your own sides together at the end of the four day shindig.
Tickets available at eden-court.co.uk and on 01463 234234 For full details see our listings or visit the festival website at happy-ness.co.uk Follow all the latest news on Twitter @HappynessFest

HAPPYNESS FESTIVAL: Bec Hill, Fred MacAulay, Frehd The Clown, Gordon Southern, Jarred Christmas, Patrick Monahan, Stuart Mitchell, Tommy Tiernan, Zoe Lyons
Inverness Thu 22Sun 25 May, Various venues
Funny bunch, comedians. So we thought wed speak to some ahead of the HAPPYNESS FESTIVAL. You can read a few snippets here - but for the full interviews head to our website
whatsonhighlands.com/interviews
I WHERE WERE YOU BORN/WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE YOUVE LIVED ? TOMMY TIERNAN: I was born in Donegal abandoned by clowns and raised by civil servants FREHD THE CLOWN: I was born at Eleventy 5 Jellybean Drive, Clown Town, 5555. That is the favouritest place I have ever lived. I EARLIEST COMEDY MEMORY/BEST COMEDY MEMORY/WORST COMEDY MEMORY? JARRED CHRISTMAS: Earliest comedy memory was wearing my older brothers pants on my head for a laugh and then realising too late that they were dirty underpants. Worst comedy memory was any show in Croydon. GORDON SOUTHERN: My Dad had lots of Billy Connolly LPs around the house when I was a kid. Billy when he was a big hairy drunk with bananas on his feet. Billy who would smash every time he went on Parkinson through a cloud of cigarette smoke. STUART MITCHELL: My worst comedy memory was having a pint glass thrown at my head. I have written new jokes since then. And also never invited my dad along again. I WHAT WOULD YOU LEAST LIKE US TO KNOW ABOUT YOU/TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOU WE MIGHT FIND SURPRISING ? PATRICK MONAHAN: That I snore in bed and sometimes I dribble. ZOE LYONS: I have been known to bite my own toe nails sorry. STUART MITCHELL: My anc is the only female cast member of The Singing Kettle. She took over from Cilla and Artie when they retired last year and is doing a super job. Very proud, very proud as Sir Alex Ferguson would say. FREHD THE CLOWN: Ummmm... hmmmm... I like to pop off (fart) in the cheese section in super markets then walk away just a bit and watch as people walk passed pulling faces thinking its really stinky cheese. I BEST OTHER JOB YOU EVER HAD ? FRED MACAULAY: I had a number of part time jobs as a student, but my best summer job was Potato Roguing. I dont have time to tell you what it involved, but it was lucrative.
I WHO IS/WAS YOUR FAVOURITE OTHER COMEDIAN ? TOMMY TIERNAN: Lenny Bruce FRED MACAULAY: I like many many other comedians. Its like a fraternity. And a sorority. We respect as much as admire. Laughed out loud at Eddie Izzards gig last year, but no-one has ever made me laugh as much at a single gig as Phil Kay. STUART MITCHELL: Michael McIntyre. I always get abuse from others when I say he really is the best all round comic who appeals to a vast audience. I YOUR FAVOURITE TV SHOW ? BEC HILL: My Mums British, so we grew up on a diet of Monty Python, The Goodies and Dave Allen. BUT my all-time favourite show has always been Red Dwarf. The earlier series have stood the test of time. I YOUR FANTASY PRIME MINISTER ? FRED MACAULAY: Do you know what is a good exercise? Think of all the Prime Ministers youve had in your lifetime. Think about all of their good points. And they still come up short dont they. They comedy answer is of course Brigitte Nyborg, but the actual answer is just someone who will do the job honestly and without favour. PATRICK MONAHAN: Lionel Ritchie, he might not know much about politics but he has a great back catalogue of hits that he can sing in parliament! I WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING/ DOING/DRINKING/EATING IN THE HIGHLANDS ? BEC HILL: I dont know! I was very busy last year, so I didnt really have a chance to venture outside of the venues I was performing at, but if any readers want to suggest some activities for me, they can hit me up on Twitter: @bechillcomedian! JARRED CHRISTMAS: Good whiskey, Good times and good weather please. GORDON SOUTHERN: I just want to look all windswept on a hillside and maybe make an 80s pop video. ZOE LYONS: Last time I did Happyness I drove over to see my pals who live in Applecross. We ate locally caught prawns at the Applecross Inn. Quite simply the best lunch I have ever had and I am looking forward to repeating that experience!

A night of riotous comedy as four hapless but frightfully nice actors in evening dress gather in a 1940s BBC drama studio, where they use their skills, wit, ingenuity and 100 unlikely sound effects and props to recreate the hilarious story of the valiant people of the Island of Todday. MADAMA BUTTERFLY @ Eden Court Empire, 7.15pm Classic, timeless and stylish, Sir David McVicars Madama Butterfly has been a firm favourite since it was first staged in 2000. Foregoing sentimentality to create a rich cast of characters with unflinchingly human characteristics, his production lays bare a hugely atmospheric, poignant story that still has the power to affect, over a century after it was first performed.

EATING OUT
Allangrange Arms
The drive out to Munlochy on the Black Isle reveals the glorious Highland landscape unfurling beneath bright spring skies. Just the kind of journey to lift the spirits and get in the mood for a meal at Allangrange Arms, a place we ve been hearing a lot of good things about. At the top of the main street in Munlochy itself, a village set just back from the exquisite Munlochy Bay, it s a refurbished place, turning what was once a dingy old hotel into a nicely designed gastropub, complete with rather handsome picnic tables outside that you sense would be just the place to down a few ales on a long summer s night. This being spring, it s still not quite warm enough to dine al fresco, so we nip inside into a warren of rooms, each with a completely dierent character, the most suitable for lunch seeming to be the large, airy front section, simple bare tables topped with vases of fresh owers. On a
midweek lunchtime there are still a dozen or so customers, many having the air of regulars, suggesting that as well as a destination venue, it s managed to retain the spirit (and custom) of an old-fashioned local. They ve a regularly updated Facebook and Twitter presence with loads of promotions and advertising for screenings of footie matches, suggesting they re still more than anything part of the local community. Which has to be applauded. Front-of-house is marshalled by a couple who, we assume manage the place - the woman in particular very charming and friendly. There s no denying that just about everything on the menu tickles the tastebuds oering everything from the simplicity of burgers or bangers and mash to ambitious dishes like roast rump of lamb, along with a number of dishes given an interesting Asian twist, the one unifying presence being that of produce sourced from

For my main course, I plumped for a Burger. There are three dierent varieties on oer - beef, venison and an interesting Thai Pork version wherein haggis and crispy noodles are introduced to proceedings. Mine is the plain beef version, though to apply such an epithet would be to do an injustice to the enormous thing placed on a wooden board in front of me. Gourmet burgers are not so readily available up here as down south so it s good to nd one on oer here. An 8oz burger of Angus beef is served on a scrumptious focaccia bread bun with Ayrshire bacon, cheddar, pulled pork, chorizo, beetroot salad, a couple of onion rings the size of lifebelts and, just in case you re still peckish, a bowl of superlative, freshly-cooked chips. It s a dizzying prospect, the aforementioned chips, bun and pulled pork particularly successful. And the meat in the patty is top quality - meaning it s all the more disappointing that it s overcooked, making it something of a struggle to cut through, particularly since a sharp knife isn t provided. There are all the elements here for the best burger you ll get within a hundred miles, especially when washed down with a pint of the excellent, locally brewed Happy Chappy Ale, if only the execution on this occasion wasn t a smidgen awry. My companion has one of the Asian options, a Sweet Potato,
of coulis. Here though that s most denitely not the case, with them proving to perhaps be the highlight of the whole meal. Mine is billed as
crisp on the outside and soft within, accompanied by an orange chocolate sauce and some splendid Black Isle Milk Ice Cream. A great end to the meal, emphasising just why, when they get it right, it s worth making the journey for. But there are a few quibbles: the service is woefully slow - with the nger bowl from the starter left on the table for the entire meal, and the enquiry as to whether we d like another drink only proered two hours into proceedings. Certainly not faultless then, but there s denitely real potential here and it would be a shame for it to spiral out of control by getting more little things wrong. If they keep their eye on the ball they ll be just ne. And we ll be back beneath those huge skies to sup some ales at the picnic tables. Courgette & Vegetable Coconut Curry, served with naan bread, rice
and a side salad. It s largely a success, if mildly salty, but the spicing and avour combinations show a real deftness of touch. Puddings are so often a disappointment in gastropubs since we know that the majority of chefs don t really have much truck with creating desserts, preferring instead to buy them in and send them straight out gussied up with a cape gooseberry and a dollop
