This lesson is designed to introduce students to symbolism and to recognize how American symbols represent patriotism. This lesson uses the PowerPoint embedded in the materials section.

MONDAY

This lesson is designed for students to understand the flag is a symbol of a nations people and its ideals. This lesson uses strategies from Integrating Language Arts and Social Studies (p. 171-178).
TUESDAY

This lesson teaches students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, the meaning of this promise, and how it is a national symbol. This lesson uses a cut-and-paste activity to reinforce the meaning behind the words to the Pledge of Allegiance. This lesson is designed to help students understand the symbolism of a local monument and the important historical events that are connected to the monument. This lesson uses strategies from Integrating Language Arts and Social Studies (p. 143-147). This is a field trip lesson designed to engage students in the active learning of local, historical sites/monuments through hands-on exploration. This lesson uses strategies from Integrating Language Arts and Social Studies (p. 55- 62).

WEDNESDAY

THURSDAY

Lesson requires projector and photos of Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, USS Arizona Memorial, Mount Rushmore, and local monument(s). *Find Literature on local monument(s). *Field trip! Check that all permission slips have been signed.

FRIDAY

H1.1.3- Listen to histories of important local landmarks that create a sense of community among citizens.

Gather supplies for students to carry: clipboards, blank paper, pens or pencils Make student copies of Field Trip Date Sheets for assessment.
