24, 2013 from 7 - 8 p.m. Topics to Consider Advisors expectations for you & your expectations for your advisor o Are they clear o Are they mutual o Are they fair o Are they possible/pragmatic o What resources/knowledge might you need to complete them Distribution of responsibilities & rights o Who will coordinate e-board and general assembly activities o Who is involved in what aspects of the organization & how o e.g. finances, meeting facilitation, records keeping o Who makes what decisions o What is the process- consensus, democratic, autocratic Does advisor get a vote o Are there exceptions that are foreseeable e.g. need for executive decision Creating structure & boundaries of the advising relationship o How involved in the activities of the E-Board & GA would they like to be o Do you expect to look to them strictly for organization business o Do you expect to turn to them for organizational and leadership issues o Do you expect to have personal relationships and conversations with them Communication o Will they contact you or will you contact them primarily o Will you communicate in person, via email, personal phone, social media o Do they want to see you regularly or only as needed o Do you come to them with questions and concerns or should you seek out other campus resources

Insider's Exclusive: What Advisors are Looking for from Leaders" Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013 from 7 - 8 p.m. Tips & Tricks: Preparation Ask to meet via a professional channel and explain what you want to discuss Attend the meeting prepared with what you want & need o Differentiate between the needs and wants o Look to see if what you want or need is listed under your job description o What will you need to fulfill your job description o Create a list before hand to make the conversation more comfortable o What will you need from your advisor to meet your own goals o What responsibility you are willing to take in getting what you ask for o Consider if your wants/needs are reasonable for you & your advisor Think about ways to explain and clarify your needs & wants if there are questions

Tips & Tricks: In Dialogue Start by asking questions; avoid demands Be open to getting your needs and wants met in a variety of ways Recognize that you will need to compromise on at least some points Be open to critical feedback Ask clarifying questions or restate what you heard to ensure you are both clear Document the agreed upon expectations Discuss ways to hold one another accountable and decide on a few Discuss the possibility of re-visiting expectations periodically

Tips & Tricks: Follow-Up Review your documentation and ask any follow up questions Ensure that you both have copies of final agreements Set up systems of accountability o Consider how you can assess your completion & growth related to these expectations Schedule periodic reviews if applicable Find ways to make your advisors expectations a part of your leadership, personal, & organizational goals Consider what elements of this dialogue will need to be shared with others Consider how these expectations will shape what you want & need from your peers and general membership o Consider how this experience can
