Common Name: Punjam/ Karanja Latin Name: Pongamia pinnata INCI Name: Pongamia pinnata (Karanja) Seed oil Origin: Seeds of Pongamia pinnata Main Ingredients: Fatty acids, Insaponifiables, Pongamal Botanical Description: Pongamia pinnata is a medium-sized evergreen or briefly deciduous, glabrous shrub or tree (15-25 m high with straight or crooked trunk, 50-80 cm or more in diameter) and has a broad crown of spreading or drooping branches. It belongs to the family Leguminoceae. History of Cultivation: Pongamia pinnata is originated in India and occurs naturally in Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and throughout south-east Asia all the way upto north-eastern Australia, Fiji and Japan. It is planted in the humid tropical lowlands around the world, and has been introduced in Egypt and the United States. Pongamia pinnata is native to humid and sub-tropic environments; common along waterways or seashores, with its roots in fresh or saltwater. It is very tolerant of saline conditions and alkalinity, and occurs naturally in lowland forest on limestone and rocky coral outcrops on the coast, along the edges of mangrove forest and along tidal streams and rivers. Therapeutic Properties: The seed oil is rubbed as liniment on skin diseases and rheumatic parts. Internally, it is given as a stomachic and cholagogue in dyspepsia and cases of sluggish liver. A seed powder is given as an expectorant in bronchitis and whooping cough, and is also prescribed as a febrifuge and tonic. Seed paste is spread on sores and rheumatic parts. Karanja oil is widely used to treat various skin infections such as eczema, psoriasis, etc. It is also used for its insecticidal and antiseptic properties. According to Ayurveda, Karanj is anthelmintic, alexipharmic and useful in diseases of eye, vagina, skin.

A challenge test was carried out with suitable test organisms. A dense actively growing culture of each test organism 0.1ml (approx. 106 - 108 cfu/ml) was inoculated in to 20g of the sample and the levels were studied over a period of 28 days.
