2. Government
This is an illustration of Han Dynasty civil servants. This is an important achievement because during the Han dynasty, they improved the way civil servants were hired. Under the Han, civil servants were hired based on their knowledge and ability, instead of their social status. Men had to pass a long, difficult test to become officials .
3. Agriculture
This is a picture of an iron plow. This is an important achievement because the Chinese were the first to learn how to pour melted iron to make strong iron plows. Plows in the Han Dynasty were designed to push the dirt away from the rows being plowed so that the dirt didnt pile up in front of the plow.
4. Industry
This is a photo of salt. This is an important achievement because during the Han Dynasty, the Chinese learned how to mine salt from under the ground. The Chinese would dig deep wells using iron tipped bamboo drills. A hollow bamboo pole was then dropped when they reached saltwater. The pole had a valve that allowed saltwater to enter the pole. The pole then was brought back to the surface with the saltwater inside. The saltwater was then placed in iron pots and were heated until the water evaporated, leaving the salt.
5. Art
This is an image of paper used during the Han Dynasty. This is an important achievement because paper helped calligraphers and changed the way that people communicated. Paper was also more affordable than silk or bamboo, and was easier to bind into books. To make paper, materials such as: silk fibers, seaweed, hemp and bamboo were used.
6. Medicine
These are acupuncture needles used during the Han Dynasty. This is an important achievement because acupuncture is still being used today to treat a range of conditions. . In acupuncture, thin needles are inserted into specific parts of the body to cure illnesses that strike quickly. During the Han Dynasty acupuncture was thought to rebalance the forces of yin and yang.
7. Science
This is an image of a seismograph invented during the Han Dynasty. This is an important achievement because we also use this today for detecting earthquakes. This seismograph worked by the earthquakes vibrations triggering to release one of the eight balls, which would fall in the direction of the earthquake. Using this seismograph, the Han could detect earthquakes from several hundred miles away.
