INTRODUCTION An active magnetic bearing (AMB) system supports a rotating shaft, without any physical contact by suspending the rotor in the air, with an electrically controlled (or/and permanent magnet) magnetic force. Active magnetic bearing provides a means of supporting a body completely without any contact. The advantages of such bearing compared with traditional solution are: absence of mechanical wear and friction, lubrication free operation and therefore suitability for sever environments ,active vibration control, unbalance compensation etc. it is a mechatronic product which involves different fields of engineering such as Mechanical, Electrical, Control Systems, and Computer Science etc. The rapid progress in electronics and control during last two decades has promoted research in the field of AMB system and led to quite a number of industrial application in domains such as turbo machinery, vacuum technology, machining and transportation.
Today, there are two trends in AMB technology :on the one hand ,high speed gain more and more importance, especially in the field of machining and vacuum technology one the other hand, analog control is abandoned in favour
of digital control which offer much more flexibility for taking full advantage of the possibilities provided by magnetic bearing. The first aim is to gather all information required to discuss material behaviour under high centrifugal load in order to provide a general design tool for determining optimal material geometry combinations. The test rotor features amorphous metals which are well suited for high speed AMB application. To our knowledge this rotor is the first one incorporating this new material.
BASIC FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLE Magnetic bearing provides support for any ferromagnetic body without any mechanical contact. Two basic bearing types can be distinguished: the active magnetic bearing (AMB) and the passive magnetic bearing (PMB). With passive magnetic bearing, teh bearing forces result from pairs of permanent magnets with opposing field direction producing mutual repulsion. Although this kind of contact free support seems to be very simple there are two major drawbacks when compared with an active magnetic bearing: firstly,a complete six degree freedom support of rigid body by uncontrolled ferromagnetic forces is impossible. Secondly, the bearing characteristics of PMB cannot be changed easily during operation as its is the case with an AMB. However hybrid AMB/PMB system are applied to reduce system complexity and cost.
