Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Sets DTC P1860

SYMTOM
The CHECK ENGINE and CHECK TRANS lights are on, or the customer reports they were on. PROBABLE CAUSE An open circuit or a poor ground in the torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid causes the powertrain control module (PCM) to set circuit diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P1860. DIAGNOSIS Connect the PGM Tester to the vehicles data link connector (DLC), and look for engine and transmission DTCs in the Testers freeze frame, the failure record, and the DTC menus. 2. Remove the transfer protector (4 bolts).
TRANSFER PROTECTOR

If P1860 is the only DTC you find, go to

CORRECTIVE ACTION.

If you find other DTCs, look them up on pages

6E-115 thru 6E-118 of the 1996 SLX Fuel and Emissions Manual. (If the DTC description says Refer to 4L30-E Automatic Transmission Diagnosis, use pages 7A-62 and 7A-63 of the 1996 SLX Service Manual.) After you correct the other DTCs, go to CORRECTIVE ACTION to fix P1860.

3. Support the transfer case with a jack stand, and remove the third crossmember.
3RD CROSSMEMBER

If you do not find any DTCs, refer to page 6E-25

and page 6E-481 of the 1996 SLX Fuel and Emissions Manual for STRATEGY-BASED DIAGNOSTICS and SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS. CORRECTIVE ACTION Replace the TCC solenoid and its ground wire. 1. Write down the radio station presets, then disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

4. Remove the transmission drain plug, drain the ATF, and discard the drain plug gasket.

7. Use a small, flat tip screwdriver to push the tongue of the ground wire terminal in the connector, being careful not to damage the connector. Then push the terminal out the top of the connector and discard the ground wire.

9. Remove the TCC solenoid bolt; then pull the solenoid out of the adapter case valve body, and discard the solenoid.
TCC SOLENOID BOLT

14. Slip the ground wire terminal around the bolt, then reinstall the bolt, and torque it to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft). Make sure the ground wire runs along the front of the main case valve body.

10. Lubricate the two O-rings on the new solenoid with petroleum jelly, then push the solenoid into the valve body. Reinstall the bolt, and torque it to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). 11. Reconnect the solenoid wire harness connector. 12. Route the new ground wire through the fluid passage between the adapter case and the main case.

15. Reinstall the main case and adapter case oil pans with new pan gaskets and new bolts. Torque the bolts to 11 Nm (97 lb-in). 16. Reinstall the third crossmember, and torque its bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft). 17. Remove the jack stand from the transfer case. 18. Reinstall the transmissions two rear mount nuts, and torque them to 41 Nm (30 lb-ft). 19. Reinstall the oxygen sensor harness clips. 20. Reinstall the transfer protector, and torque the bolts to 37 Nm (27 lb-ft). 21. Put a new gasket on the transmission drain plug, lubricate the gasket with clean ATF; then reinstall the plug, and torque it to 38 Nm (28 lb-ft). 22. Lower the vehicle, and reconnect the negative cable to the battery. 23. Connect the PGM Tester to monitor ATF temperature, then start the engine. With the engine still running, raise the vehicle.

24. Remove the transmission fill plug, and add about four quarts of Dexron III ATF. (The vehicle should be level when you add the ATF.) If ATF is not flowing out of the fill hole, add more until it does. Reinstall the fill plug.

25. Lower the vehicle, but keep the wheels off the ground. With the wheels clear, move the gear selector lever through all its positions; then apply the brakes, and return the lever to PARK. 26. Raise the vehicle, and remove the fill plug. 27. Let the engine idle until the ATF temperature is 90 to 135F (32 to 57C). As the temperature of the ATF increases, it will drip out the fill hole until the correct level is reached. 28. Reinstall the fill plug with a new gasket, and torque the plug to 38 Nm (28 lb-ft). 29. Enter the radio station presets, and set the clock.
