Lesson Plan: Erik The Red/Lief Ericson CCSS 9-10.

6-Compare the point of view of two or more authors for how they treat the same or similar topics, including which details they include and emphasize in their respective accounts CCSS: 9-10.3-Analyze in detail a series of events described in a text; determine whether earlier events caused later ones or simply preceded them Lesson Objective: I can list 2 difficulties which Erik the Red experienced throughout his journeys. Lesson Objective: I can identify Erik the Reds homeland (Iceland) and his territorial discovery of modern day Greenland given a map of the world. Lesson Goal: For students to be able to see the different motives and challenges of Erik the Reds time period but still be able to make comparisons to modern day explorers. Essential Question (Why is this important): What was Erik the Reds motivation for exploring new land territory and how might this be similar or different to a modern day individual exploring something other than land or territory?

Agenda: -AS -World Map -Map Puzzle -Assignment/Challenge -Visit Website -Reveiw/Preview Next class

Beginning: -AS: Think of a place you have always wanted to go and why then share it with a partner. -Think about what that place has to offer that your home does not.

Middle: -Mini lecture/background to who Erik the Red is and his traditions and customs as a viking. -Analyze a world map and locate various places which have been discovered throughout the history of the world and why people ended up there. -Assignment/Challenge: -Gain a better understanding of the world: Split into groups of 3 or 4 and each group is going to receive puzzle pieces which will makeup a region of the world. -There will then be a question as to which place of significance was discovered and why? Students will use their laptops to find this answer. They will then list at least one difficulty/struggle the peoples who discovered the location had or encountered.

-We will then find which group had Erik the Red and discuss why his situation was unique to others. We will also discuss what challenges were different and similar to explorers just found by the class and explorers studied in previous lessons. -Lastly students will visit a website with documentation of a variety of explorers. Students will be required to list 2 challenges of Erik the Red based on the website, then find at least one other explorer on the website and list a similar challenge that Erik The Red faced.

End: -Review of what we have discussed and preview final explorer for the next day.
