I have decided to research my grandfathers side of the family, using a genealogy book that my grandmother has about his family. His family, the Caldwells, originated from Ireland. While the genealogy book only dates back to 1750 the line of the James Caldwell that is the original Caldwell in the book he was traced back to the Caldwells in Ireland, where they owned a castle. In the front of the book shows the remains of the castle named Caldwell Castle which is located in Castle Caldwell Forest Park in Northern Ireland. Today most of the castle lies in ruins but some of the smaller buildings still remain. The book also speaks about how part of the main house of the castle had a secret tunnel that lead to a nearby lake, the picture in the book shows part of the main house that now just ruins. It does state that there were a couple other passages around the estate but it does not give the location in the book. Since this is the first time I have really looked into my heritage I wanted to try to find out as much as possible using the questions given. The Irish Flag is known as the Tricolour and has three colors on it; green, white, and orange. The symbolism behind these colors are that the orange represents the Irish Protestants and the green represents Irish Catholics, the white is meant to be the hope for peace between them. The reason orange is in the flag is because of William Orange who the protestants followed during the time the flag was created. The flag was created in 1848 by Thomas Francis Meagher who wanted to bring peace to his home of Ireland. No changes have been made to the flag since its creation in 1848 and in Article 7 of the Irish Constitution it states the National Flag is the Tricolour of Green, White, and Orange. While the Irish national flag was created in 1848 the country would not see its freedom until 1920. There were so many problems between the Protestants and Catholics that the country had been torn apart for nearly 300 years. Finally in 1920 the Government of Ireland was put into place to set up separate parliaments for both the north and south with the south being the only one that lasted. Later in 1921 a treaty between Britain and southern Ireland established the Irish Free State. A civil war erupted over the pro-treaty people and the anti-treaty people. The anti-treaty people lost and the treaty stood. In 1937 southern Ireland drafted and adopted a new constitution creating the new State of Eire, this was a republic in all but name and still remained formally with the British Commonwealth. This would last until in 1948 when the Republic of Ireland would be born, the north Ireland part was put back under the rule of England.
