Form Deck General Information

Tables -The most common use of form deck is to support concrete

fills but it can be used for a variety of structural applications. Therefore,
two sets of tables are shown. The first group of tables is for the deck
as the sole load carrying member; ASD and LRFD tables both show
stress load/deflection load in kPa. The loads are uniformly applied
and the deflection limit is 1/180 of the span. The second group of
tables show the slab capacities for structural (normal weight) concrete
with draped mesh placed over the various form decks. The effects of the
deck profile are considered in determining the slab load values.

Design Considerations - SLABS ON FORM DECK

The live loads shown in the tables are the loads that the reinforced
concrete slab can carry. Live loads are based on unshored galvanized
deck. If uncoated form is used, or if shoring is used, the load shown in the
table must either be reduced by the weight of the slab (the quick method)
or, more precisely, by solving the equation:
M = 1.4MDL + 1.7MLL.
MDL is the moment caused by the slab weight.
Load values shown in the tables are for continuous (3 or more) spans; - M
= WL2/12 for spans less than 3 m, or WL2/10 for spans greater than 3 m,
and + M = WL2/16 per ACI 318. In most cases negative moments control.
Load values for end spans, dual spans, single spans, or for unequal
adjacent spans should be appropriately reduced to compensate for
increased moment coefficients; use the tabulated factored ( = 0.90)
design moments to determine the allowable design loads. The gage
selection lines shown in the tables are based on three spans for
the deck as a form.
EXAMPLE 1: Check the end span of a 100 mm slab with welded wire
mesh 152 x 152 MW 25.8 x 25.8; the slab is continuous over 1.2m spans.
The UFX deck is to be unshored and is galvanized.
End span:
+M = WL2 /11
From the UFX table:
+M = 3997Nm
WL2/11 = 3997/1.7
W = 17.96kPa
-M at the first interior support controls and the table value of W = 17.1kPa is
therefore the limiting load.
EXAMPLE 2: Use the same parameters of the previous example to check
a single span - the mesh is not draped but is placed on top of the deck.
+M = WL2/8 = 3997/1.7
W = 13.1kPa
EXAMPLE 3: A 100mm slab on UFX is spanning 1800mm; the mesh is
152 x 152MW 25.8 x 25.8. The deck was shored during construction.
Determine the allowable live load.
Quick method:
The table shows W = 7.6 kPa.
The slab mass is 205 kg/m2 which is
equal to 2 kPa.
The live load is then:
W = 7.6 - 2.0 = 5.6 kPa
Precise method:
- M = 3487 Nm = WL2/12
- MDL=1.4(2)(1.8)2/12 = 756 Nm
3487= 756 + 1.7WLL(1.8)2/12
W = 5.9 kPa

In the tables, shear has been checked for uniform loads. The
allowable shear force is:
V = 0.85 x 2 x 0.09(f 'c)0.5bd.
The table values are based on f 'c = 20.7 MPa and, for the reinforcing
steel (welded wire fabric), Fy = 415 MPa.
### values in the table represent uniform live loads greater than
19kPa. Loads higher than this limit are usually caused by concentrated loads such as those caused by fork lift trucks. When heavy
concentrated loads are to be considered, the slab system should be
given additional analysis.
Span to depth ratios are limited to 28. Spot checks have shown that the
tabulated (live) loads would not cause a deflection greater than L/360.
In no case should the table values be used to predict slab
performance using randomly placed fibers in lieu of wire mesh.
Admixes are not to be considered as primary reinforcement.
In some short span layouts, the galvanized form deck is capable of
carrying all of the required loading without considering the concrete
slab strength. For these cases a minimum of 152 x 152 x MW 9.1 x
9.1 is recommended for crack control.
Concrete and Placing Concrete - To prevent
leakage at side laps, concrete should be placed in the opposite direction
to which the sheets were erected so that the concrete flow is away from
the lap rather than into the lap. Care should be taken during pouring
operations not to allow heavy concentrated loads or equipment to be
placed on the steel forms. When buggies are used to deliver the concrete,
the runways should be planked to avoid local damage. Concrete
admixtures containing calcium chloride (or other salts) should not be used
over steel forms.
Fastening - Welding patterns 1 and 2 represent minimum
acceptable fastening that will allow slabs to be designed on a continuous
basis and also stabilize joists. More frequent fastening may be required to
satisfy diaphragm or fire rating requirements. Consult the U.L. Fire
Resistance Directory for specific details on fire rated constructions.
Diaphragm values can be obtained from the SDI Diaphragm Design
Manual or by contacting our home office.
Welding washers are recommended for attaching deck lighter than 22
gage to structural steel (or joists). Welding washers are not recommended
for attaching deck that is 22 gage or heavier. Welding washers are never
recommended for attaching side laps except at supports. Welding
washers furnished by U.S.D., Inc. are 16 gage. The welder strikes an
arc, burns a hole through the sheet and builds a plug weld from the joist
(or beam) into the washer. Fasteners other than welds are acceptable to
U.S.D., Inc. providing that the designer has checked all of the design
parameters of the fasteners.
Finishes - Form deck is commonly available in two finishes,
galvanized (conforming to ASTM A653) and uncoated (black). Galvanized steel should always be specified for carrying non-structural
insulating concrete fills. Painted form deck is available on special order.

SINGLE SPAN UNIFORM TOTAL LOAD / Load that Produces l/180 Deflection, kPa

40 ksi

Estimate Construction load at

2.39 kPa.
10.8 + 2.39 = 13.2 kPa.
ASD shows 12 gage can carry
16.0 kPa on a 2400 mm span.

82
65

EXAMPLE:
The deck is to carry 450 mm (total
depth) of concrete and span 2400
mm. Use SDI single span loading
to select the deck gage.
Conc. Wt. = (450 - 65) (1) (1) 2320
1000
= 893.2 kg/m2
Conc.fill flutes
= 0.0268 x 2320
= 62.2 kg/m2
893.2 + 62.2
= 955.4 kg/m2

The table shows constructions that are normally used for floors. For roofs see U.L.
Numbers Pxxx and page 14 of this manual. In general, heavier and deeper form
members may be used without compromising the fire rating; however, concrete
cover must remain and any beam and joist spacing restrictions still apply. In all
cases the U.L. Fire Resistance Directory should be consulted for concrete
densities, fastening requirements, and all details of construction. Some ratings have
the concrete cover vary with the span - particulary the 700 numbers. This table
was prepared using the 1996 U.L. Fire Resistance Directory.

Typical Floor Deck with Concrete Diaphragms

1. The G' (stiffness) value of 429
kN/mm can be used for all
combinations in the table.
2. Sidelaps are welded or screwed
(28 to 24 gage) at a maximum of 910
mmon spans greater than 1520 mm;
i.e. a 1820 mm span would have
one sidelap attachment, an 2400 mm
span would have two.
3. Strength values are based on 65
mm cover of normal weight concrete
(f 'c = 21 MPa) over the ribs. For light
weight (structural) concrete multiply
the table values by 0.7. Deck depths
up to 75 mm are covered.
4. It may be necessary to increase
the number or strength of the
perimeter connections to utilize the
strength shown in the table.

The basis for floor and roof deck tables is the SDI Diaphragm Design Manual,
Second Edition. These abbreviated tables cover commonly used constructions.
Higher values can be obtained by altering the types and sizes of the fasteners.
Additional information may be obtained by calling the Summit, NJ office.

Design
Section Properties in this manual have been calculated in accordance with
the AISI Specifications for the Design of Cold Formed Steel Structural
Members. Design loads and span recommendations follow the SDI Design
Manual for Composite Decks, Form Decks, Roof Decks, and Cellular Metal
Floor Deck with Electrical Distribution.
Job Site Storage of Material
Steel Deck delivery should be scheduled to arrive at the jobsite as required
for erection; however, if site storage is needed, the bundles of deck (either
painted, uncoated, or galvanized) should be stored off the ground with one
end elevated to provide drainage, and should be protected against
condensation with a ventilated waterproof covering.
Erection
Deck sheets should be placed in accordance with approved erection layout
drawings by United Steel Deck, Inc., or in accordance with SDI standards.
Care should be exercised to avoid overloading the supporting structural
elements when placing bundles of steel deck on the building frame.
Attachments
In order for deck to function properly, it is imperative that the deck be
adequately fastened. For diaphragms, proper fastening means to follow
the requirements given by the plans and specifications; the type and
spacing of the fasteners must not be changed without the consent of the
designer. For deck that is to be used as a working platform, the attachments should be made as soon as the deck is positioned. In no case
should deck be left unattached to the structural frame. If arc puddle welds
are used, either E60XX or E70XX welding rods are recommended - rod
size and amperage are to be selected by the qualified welder; the
American Welding Society Specifications for Welding Sheet Steel in
Structures should be followed. Welding washers are not recommended for
decks made of 22 gage material or heavier; welding washers are recommended on decks lighter than 22 gage. If screws are used to attach the
deck to the supports, a #12 is advised. Side lap screws should be #10s.
Tolerances
The standard tolerance for deck sheet lengths is a plus or minus 3 mm .
Electrified (cellular) deck has a length tolerance of plus 0mm, minus 6 mm.
Base steel thickness tolerance is minus 5% as per the SDI and AISI.
