Creating Our Own Talk Shows

DATE: Mar. 31st 2014 TIME: CLASS (Grade or Cycle): Grade 6

DURATION: will take 8 classes SCHOOL: Elizabeth Ballantyne approximately 2 weeks

OBJECTIVES

Students will be able to express their own opinions/predictions about the main character of Stargirl - Students will be able to critically reflect on story so far through posing insightful questions for the characters Language Arts Competencies: - To write self-expressive, narrative and information-based texts - To represent her/his literacy in different media - To use language to communicate and learn Cross- Curricular competencies : - To exercise critical judgement - To use information - To cooperate with others - To adopt effective work methods - To use creativity - To use information and communications technologies - To communicate appropriately - Stargirl by Jerry Spinelly - Hot Seat planning sheets - Video camera - Computers with Movie Maker software LESSON

Introduction - Explain to students that they will be creating their own episodes of Hot Seat just like the kids in the book do each week and the guest on the show will be Stargirl, The cast of the show consists of the host who mediates the conversation, the guest, and the jury who actually ask the questions. - Split students into groups of approximately 6 and distribute the planning sheets - Students will work in groups to assign their roles, brainstorm 10 interesting interview questions and then narrow the list down to the 5 best questions. the answers to these questions do not need to be available in the book

Development 2 classes - Once the 5 best questions have been selected, students will work in groups to write Stargirls answers to the questions. - Explain to students that the questions should be answered in Stargirls voice, Emphasize her use of figurative language. - Remind students to use their imaginations to make predictions about 1 class Stargirls character. Their answers should not be taken from the bo ok but rather from their own interpretations of her personality. 1 class - Once all questions have been answered students will fill in the rest of the script by adding in lines for the host and reactions from the jury. - Upon completion of the scripts, film each groups episode in short clips Encourage students to bring in costumes, props, etc. for filming day Closure/Transition - Take students to the lab to edit their videos - Use the projector to show students how to use Movie Maker to connect the short clips together, delete unwanted scenes, add transitions/effects, a title page and credits. - Once all videos have been edited watch them as a class
