SYNOPSIS

CIVIL ENGINEERING PROJECT 1 enables students to relate the knowledge and display practice skills in civil engineering. This course will also train the student in communication skills, group works, work planning, decision making, recommendation and creativity using all the facilities.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO) Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

SUMMARY

(15 LECTURE : 00 PRACTICAL)

RESEARCH TOPIC Types of research; fundamental/basic research and applied research, research topics related to civil engineering field. RESEARCH WRITING Format writing; report, references, appendix. Introduction in research writing; problem statement, research objective, literature view, research methodology; data design, data collection, data analysis. Organise presentation on; the raw data, methods of data presentation. Relate discussion with the research and derive the recommendation for future research. PROJECT SELECTION AND PLANNING Propose a suitable topic for the project from the following categories: laboratories practice, produce civil engineering product/design, academic research/study on product. Selection of concepts/principles/methods suitable for project. PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION OF THE PROJECT PROPOSAL PAPER Preparation method of project proposal, basic content/data for each part of the project proposal. Conduct presentation of proposal with complete information. PRODUCING THE PRELIMINARY PROJECT REPORT Produce the first project report by gathering all the related information/data to complete the first project report. Produce the printed project report and prepare a complete report consist of Chapter 1, 2 and 3.

Understand the introduction in research writing 2.2.1 Produce statement that functional to attract readers regarding the basic issues of researcher. 2.2.2 Outline the research objectives. 2.2.3 Develop the problems statement (clear and precise statement regarding to the main problems that conclude the needs of research). 2.2.4 Produce writing on research introduction. 2.2.5 Organise presentation on research introduction a. problem statement b. objectives of research c. importance of research d. scope of research. PROJECT SELECTION AND PLANNING 3.1 Propose a suitable topic for the project 3.1.1 Choose from the following categories: a. laboratories practices using the existing equipment in the civil engineering lab/ workshop b. producing a civil engineering product/design c. academic research/study on civil engineering product/design. Understand the needs to search for more information on the selected topic 3.2.1 Determine the problem statement of the chosen topic. 3.2.2 Conduct research on concepts/principles/methods related to the topic of the project. 3.2.3 Analyse the result of the research above. 3.2.4 Organise selection of concepts/principles/methods that will be used in the project correctly to achieve the stated objectives. 3.2.5 Estimate the project cost. 3.2.6 Derive a specific topic from the category chosen. Know the suitable objectives 3.3.1 Identify the suitable objectives for the topic selected.

PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION OF THE PROJECT PROPOSAL PAPER 4.1 Know the exposure to the preparation method of project proposal 4.1.1 Provides understanding of the basic content/data for each part of the project proposal which includes topic, objective, brief

Acquire tools/components or a system according to the determined justification.

PRODUCING THE PRELIMINARY PROJECT REPORT 5.1 Understand the research/study should be carried out to produce the first project report 5.1.1 Gather all the related information /data to complete the first project report consist of: a. Draw/sketch the schematic of the products that will be produced. Create and prepare flowchart. Prepare an early planning of the design. Determine, prepare and choose the required tools. Understand to produce the printed project report 5.2.1 Prepare a complete report consist of Chapter 1, 2 and 3. 5.2.2 Produce a complete project report according to the format given by the school/department/program.
