8ecruitment and selection are the most important functions in an organiIation because with the help of these functions the management selects the best a!ailable candidate from a batch of them. #he organiIations, in this growing competiti!e world, need to ha!e the best of the manpower so as to ha!e an edge o!er its competiti!e. ccording to Flippo, Q8ecruitment is the process of searching for prospecti!e employees and stimulating and encouraging them to apply for 6obs in an organiIation.Q In the words of Joder, Q8ecrutiment is a process to disco!er the sources of manpower to meet the re-uirements of the staffing schedule and to employ effecti!e measured for attracting that manpower in ade-uate numbers to facilitate effecti!e selection of an efficient working force.Q 7he re"ruitment needs "an be "lassi%ied into$

<lanned. nticipated. (ne.pected.

<lanned need arise from changes in the organiIation and retirement policy. #hese occur due the e.pected changes in the organiIation so the management can make a proper policy for it. nticipated need refer to the mo!ements in personnel which an organisation can predict by studying the trends in the internal and e.ternal en!ironments. 8esignations, deaths, accidents and illness result in to the une.pected needs.

8ecruitment is a process or a series of acti!ities rather than a single e!ent. It is a linking acti!ity as it brings together the employers and employees. It is positi!e process because in this acti!ity the employers want to ha!e the ma.imum number of 6ob seekers so as to ha!e a wider scope for choice ultimately leading in spotting right persons for 6ob. It is an important function as it makes it possible to ac-uire the number and type of persons re-uired for the effecti!e functioning of the organiIation. It is an on going function in all the organiIations, but the !olume and nature of recruitment !aries with the siIe, nature and en!ironment of the organiIation. It is a comple. process because a number of policies, working conditions etc. factors affect it 55the

During my short stint at DI", it was obser!ed that the recruitment need of DI" is di!ersified. It needs persons who ha!e knowledge of use, processing of natural ingredients of number of !aried products, technical know5how of latest industrial technical knowledge, and computer applications to pharmaceutical industry to manual workers. #he importance of the process could be understood that the present work force of DI" is /,+11 employees. 2ence, the recruitment and selection procedure should match the comple.ities of the need and at the same should commensurate with the comple. need of the organiIation.

)election is the process of choosing the best candidate out of the all the applicants. In this process, rele!ant information about the applicants is collected through a series of steps so as to e!aluate their suitability for the 6ob to be filled. It is the process of matching the -ualifications with those re-uired for the 6ob so that the candidate can be entrusted with the task that matches with his credibility. It is a process of weeding out unsuitable candidates and finally identifying the most suitable candidates. #his process di!ides the candidates into two categories5the suitable ones and the unsuitable ones. #he suitable people pro!e to be the asset for the organiIation. )election is a negati!e process because in this process the management tries to minimiIe the number of people at each step so that the final decision can be in the light of all the factors and at the end of it best candidate is selected. )elected candidate the has to pass through the following stages5

<reliminary Inter!iew. pplication Form. )election #est. )election Inter!iew. <hysical 7.amination. 8eference Check. Final ppro!al.

7mployment. <reliminary Inter!iew is the initial screening done to weed out the

undesirable candidates. #his is mainly a sorting process in which the prospecti!e candidates are gi!en the necessary information about the nature of the 6ob and the organiIation. =ecessary information about the candidate is also taken. If the candidate is found suitable then he is selected for further screening else he is dropped. #his stage sa!es the time and effort of both the company and the candidate. It a!oids unnecessary waiting for the candidate and waste of money for further processing of an unsuitable candidate.

pplication Form is a traditional and widely used de!ice for collecting information from candidates. #his form asks the candidates to fill up the necessary information regarding their basic information like name, address, references, date of birth, marital status, educational -ualifications, e.perience, salary structure in pre!ious organiIation and other such information. #his form is of great help because the scrutiny of this form helps to weed out candidate who are lacking in education, e.perience or any other criterion pro!ided by the organiIation. It also helps in formulation of -uestions, which will be asked in the inter!iew. #hese forms can also be stored for future references thus maintaining a databank of the applicants. )election #ests are being increasingly used in employee selection. #ests are sample of some aspect of an indi!idual4s attitudes, beha!ior and performance. It also pro!ides a systematic basis for comparing two or more persons. #he tests help to reduce bias in selection by ser!ing as a

supplementary screening de!ice. #hese are also helpful in better matching of candidate and the 6ob. #hese re!eal the -ualifications, which remain co!ered in application form and inter!iew.

)election Inter!iew in!ol!es the interaction of the employer and the employee. )election in!ol!es a personal, obser!ational and face5to5face appraisal of candidates for employment. It is an essential element of the selection procedure. #he information obtained through application form and test can be crosschecked in the inter!iew.

#he applicants who ha!e crossed the abo!e stages ha!e to go through <hysical 7.amination either by the company4s physician or the medical officer appro!ed for the purpose. #he main aim is to ensure that the candidate is physically fit to perform the 6ob. #hose who are found physically unfit are re6ected.

#he ne.t stage marks of checking the references. #he applicant is asked to mention in his application form the names and addresses of two or three person who know him well. #he organiIation contacts them by mail or telephone. #hey are re-uested to pro!ide their frank opinion about the candidate without incurring a liability. #he opinion of the references can be useful in 6udging the future beha!iour and performance of a candidate.

#he e.ecuti!es of the concerned departments then finally appro!e the candidates short5listed by the human resource department. 7mployment is offered in the form of an appointment letter mentioning the post, the rank, the salary grade, the date by which the candidate should 6oin and other terms and conditions in brief. ppointment is generally made on probation of one or two years. fter satisfactory performance during this period the candidate is finally confirmed in the 6ob on permanent basis or regulariIed. )election is an important function as no organiIation can achie!e its goals without selecting right persons for the re-uired 6ob. Faulty selection leads to wastage of time and money and spoils the en!ironment of an organisation. )cientific selection and placement of personnel can go a long way in building up a stable workforce. It helps to reduce absenteeism and labour turno!er. <roper selection is helpful in increasing the efficiency and producti!ity of the enterprise.

O=ecessity is the mother of In!ention$ this is true e!erywhere. In the study first of all I tried to find out the cause of the process of 8ecruitment and selection. I got the answer from Dabur that here in Dabur ma6or cause for the process is its 7.pansion program as Dabur is growing !astly. Few other reasons are 8eplacement !acancy 8etirement hardly takes place here. n organiIation$s e.cellence depends upon its employee$s performance, which has not only to be maintained on a consistent le!el, but also must be impro!ed constantly. ll this can be achie!ed if suitable employees are selected, through proper 8ecruitment and )election procedure. For the recruitment and selection !arious test include for e.g. aptitude test ,personality test and group discussion. s we all know that, in today$s highly competiti!e age the biggest problem is of retention of its highly skilled employees in the organiIation. 8ecruitment plays a !ital role in this regard. ,ut it should be seen that no system is without any flaws. 7!ery system has its strong and weak points and is open for change at any time. D ,(8 a well5de!eloped )election )ystem for its employee$s de!elopment. #hus, the company pro!ides scope for employees on future growth, career planning, training and de!elopment.

LI;I7A7IO,S
#he scope of the study in terms of co!erage is limited to the Delhi operations of the Dabur :ithin the organisation the study is limited to the top5le!el management of the <ersonnel Department of the organisation @out of which samples of the respondents are also members of the 8ecruitment ' )election committeeA. #his is for the purpose of administering the -uestionnaire. In line with the purpose of conducting employee inter!iews, the study would be confined to personnel holding typical designations within the organisation at different le!els of management.

lthough the limitations that I faced in the organiIations is the absence of #rade (nions co5operation, otherwise which could ha!e help me in understanding the industrial relations in a comprehensi!e manner.

)econdly, the limitation that I ha!e is the scope of collection of sample siIe which was confined to only one department, which would ha!e other wise made my study and obser!ations in an effecti!e manner.

Dabur India "td. selects the future employees keeping e!erything in mind right from the -ualification of the employees to the future prospects5both of the organisation and the employees.

#he first step in!ol!es the filling up of %anpower Indent Form. #his form is filled up by the department, which is ha!ing the !acancy. #he form consists of !arious -uestions which are to be answered like if the current !acancy is a replacement !acancy, its reason is to be specified 5the factors which resulted it like death, retirement etc.

#he department is re-uired to gi!e the -ualifications that the future candidate should possess.

In the ne.t step, this form is gi!en to the 2uman 8esource @28A departmentR this department sees if the position can be filled through internal sources. #he internal sources can be transfers, promotion etc. In the case of internal sources, the recommendations of the employees are not taken into consideration. If the 28 department does not find suitable candidate within the organisation then this department has to gi!e reasons for it. #he form then goes to the Corporate 28 for its appro!al.

:hen the suitable candidate is not a!ailable within the organisation, the organisation then mo!es to the outside world for filling up the !acancies.

If the number of employees re-uired is large then the company has in its consideration three ways5

#he Data bank of the organisation. d!ertisements. Contacting large consultants.

#he company maintains a databank of the candidates, which is used when the number of !acancies to be filled up is large. #he sources of databank can be the -ualified candidates who had applied in the organisation earlier but due to some reasons could not 6oin the organisation.

d!ertisements are the second big source to attract the candidates. #hese are ha!ing much larger scope and reach to a number of people. #he -ualifications re-uired by the organisation and the criteria could be described in detail.

"arge number of consultants also constitutes a big source. %any people register themsel!es with these consultants and they act as a bridge between the organisation and the candidates. #he consultants pro!ide the company re-uired details about all criteria. #hese consultants are fi.ed for the organisation, which are chosen on the basis of their performance. In case of o!erseas recruitment it is checked whether their Indian counterparts can perform the 6ob efficiently or not. If need arises then they are also taken through consultants.

,ut if the number of !acancies is !ery small then the organisation takes the help of the local consultants.

#he candidates are then re-uired to fill up the pplication Form. #his form re-uires the candidate to fill the details regarding the pre!ious employment, if any and his personal data. #he form is ha!ing details regarding like the marital status, organisation structure, the position held by the candidate, his salary structure, the top three deli!eries to the organisation that pro!ed to be beneficial to the organisation, career goals, his strengths and weaknesses etc.

fter the application form has been duly filled and submitted, the selection process starts wherein the candidate has to pass through !arious stages and inter!iew. #he inter!iew panel consists of the persons from Corporate @28A, and other persons including the e.ecuti!es from the department for which the !acancy is to be filled.

#he selected candidates are then short5listed. #he short listed candidates are then gi!en priority numbersR this is due to the reason that sometimes the candidate who is ha!ing first priority is unable to 6oin the organisation due to some reasons then in that case the candidate ne.t in the priority list is gi!en preference. #he candidate has to under go medical e.amination and his credentials are !erified.

fter -ualifying these stages, the candidate is then absorbed in the organisation and e.plained his3her duties. #his phase marks the end of the selection procedure.

Dabur India "td.also performs Campus inter!iews as and when the need arises. #he esteemed organisation also pro!ides apprentice training5wherein the organisation trains the people in the working of the organisation and gi!es then stipend. If these trainees are found useful to the organisation then they are absorbed in the organisation else they are gi!en certificate so that they can show this as an e.perience and get a 6ob elsewhere.
