WEEK 1 TO-DO LIST: Authentic Materials and Realia This list is designed to help you plan your week.

There will be a to-do list each week. On this list you will see the required and optional activities for this week of the course. You may want to print this out for easy reference. For your convenience, there is also a simplified checklist that you can download: https://d28rh4a8wq0iu5.cloudfront.net/shaping1landscape/week1/checklist_end_of_week1.pdf We estimate that you will spend about 4-5 hours on the activities for this week. This includes about an hour each for viewing videos and responding to the in-video questions reading at least one of the required articles and taking notes as needed reading and posting on the discussion forums The remaining time would be spent on learning more about how Coursera works, completing your profile, participating in the contest thread, doing the pre- and post-week knowledge checks, and undertaking personal explorations of the optional readings and videos. General information about Coursera, including help, is at http://help.coursera.org You can also find forums where you can share problems and get suggestions from your peers, as well as contact the instructors about issues with the materials, by looking at the Forum List: https://class.coursera.org/shaping1landscape-001/forum/index Optional: Please add information to your Coursera profile by clicking on your name in the top right corner of the screen and selecting >Profile. If you are willing to share information with others, pull down the Privacy menu and select >The Coursera community. You can add whatever information you are willing to share. Please understand that everyone in our MOOC and in other Coursera courses will be able to see the information. Also, please introduce yourself in the Introductions Discussion Forum. The introductions in the Discussion Forum are seen only by other people enrolled in the Landscape course. Your introduction will help others in our course connect with you. (Note: You may post in both forums, but only one is required.) https://class.coursera.org/shaping1landscape-001/forum/list?forum_id=10005 Discussion Forums for Teachers of Children or Young Learners https://class.coursera.org/shaping1landscape-001/forum/list?forum_id=10012 The authors of this weeks reading, Ashford and Wakefield, suggest that language support in classroom learning centers should be visual, aural and emotional (p. 5). Other segments of the video show students connecting emotionally to realia (the puppets) and becoming motivated with authentic materials (to make a tourist brochure). Question for discussion: What kinds of resources would you need to make learning centers visually, aurally, and emotionally attractive to your own students? Discussion Forums for Teachers of Teens or Adult Learners https://class.coursera.org/shaping1landscape-001/forum/list?forum_id=10013 Alan and Stoller, the authors of this article, indicate that the teacher must be aware of grammatical and general language improvement as well as the visual attractiveness of a student project. Questions for discussion: If you dont already use project-based learning, which of the projects described near the end of this article might be appealing to your students and help develop their language proficiency? Why? (If you teach at more than one level, choose just one to talk about.) If you have already used project-based learning, describe in brief a project your students have done, and how it turned out. How did it help your students language proficiency? * Be sure to read the Netiquette file before writing in any of the forums. * https://class.coursera.org/shaping1landscape-001/wiki/Netiquette 6. Weekly Quiz (GRADED) Check what you understood of this weeks topic with the Weekly Quiz. Feel free to use your notes from the video and the readings. You can take this test twice, but some points are

Contest Forum The contest gives you a break from your work! It also demonstrates a technique for using authentic material. In the contest, youll see the Mystery Object, then either guess what it is or -if you know what it is -- name it and explain how its used. These are objects that are familiar to people in some contexts and unfamiliar to others. You could adapt this activity to your classes. Here is this weeks object: Description: This object is shaped somewhat like a very tall spider, about 28cm tall. It has 8 long metal legs and 4 short ones attached to a thin wooden head with a painted face on it. The metal legs are thin copper wire. They come out of the head at about 45 degrees, then are slightly bent about 2/3 of the way down so that the object stands easily. The head is about 8cm long and shaped like a rounded diamond. The top part of the head is painted like a cap. The face on it has a painted mustache and beard. Read more about the contest, including how to submit your own photos for a future contest, at https://class.coursera.org/shaping1landscape-001/wiki/Contest_forum To participate in this weeks contest please go to Week 1 Contest: https://class.coursera.org/shaping1landscape-001/forum/list?forum_id=10009 2.
