Teacher: Tiffany Schandorf

Class Level: 11-12 Grade Human Biology

Date: Week of 4/14-4/18

Frameworks/Benchmarks: HS-LS1-2. Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems that provide specific functions within multicellular organisms. Topics: Circulatory System, Blood, Lymphatic System Related Student Goals: Become familiar with scientific and medical terminology, perform tasks in a team Materials/Resources: Biology textbook, handouts (study guide), animation of lymphatic system, pen or pencil, anatomical model of the heart

Learning Objectives: Students will be able to: Describe the major components of the human circulatory system, Identify the main structures and trace the flow of blood through the heart, Identify the components of blood, Describe the purpose and function of the Lymphatic System

Introduction: This week we will continue our study of the Circulatory System and learn how the Lymphatic System plays a role in the Circulatory System. You will learn that the Lymphatic system is very similar to the Circulatory System in that is circulates fluid in vessels throughout the body. We will discuss the Lymphatic System in more detail when we become familiar with the Immune System. Activities: Tuesday: Lymphatic System lecture with PowerPoint (30 minutes) Strategy 13-1: Attentive Lecture (Harmin & Toth, 2006, pg. 166) re: lymphatic system Animation of lymphatic system (Youtube.com, 2010) (25 minutes) Paired reading of Ch 37, Section 3 The Lymphatic System (35 minutes) Thursday: Assign study guide & allow time to work on it (45 minutes) Strategy 13-4:Visual Aids & Graphic Organizers: (Harmin & Toth, 2006, pg. 170) (study guide) Strategy 14-3: Think- Aloud (Harmin & Toth, 2006, pg 184) for review of study guide aloud (45 minutes) Strategy 6-2: Learning Centers (Harmin & Toth, 2006, pg. 87)if time permits to review for quiz Evidence of Learning (Assessment): Informal assessments such as teacher observation of student participation in the lymphatic system activities as well as the study guide will be utilized. There is no formal assessment this week as the quiz will be next week. Wrap-up/Reflection: This week we learned about the Lymphatic System and how it relates to the Circulatory System. You saw how the lymph is similar to blood, as it is the fluid that circulates through the lymphatic vessels. We finished up Chapter 37 and next class we will have a quiz and will review with learning centers prior to your quiz.

Comments: Successful completion of these activities will prepare students for learning the Respiratory and then the Digestive systems.
