Slide 1 Community as a Socialization Agent Kimmaly, Sonya, Kimberlee, Chris Slide 2 Agents of Socialization Groups who carry the

socialization process Teach children what they need to know to become part of the society and social groups Five Agents: 1) Family 2) Childcare 3) School and Peers 4) Media 5) Community Slide 3 What is community? Large social network that families can use as a support system It can consist of people who live in the same town, area, or even neighborhood Include a group of people who share the same values or interests such as religion, sports, etc The communitys purpose in the socialization process Childrens first interactions with the local community is where community can help develop their identity (self-concept) and how they fit into the group setting (group identity). They learn self- control, social skills and values of society when they are in these community based programs. Slide 4 Community Institutions School After school child care programs Churches Libraries Parks Support services offered by local agencies Example: hospitals, police, fire departments, etc. BG the Tiger, Boys and Girls Club Mascot Slide 5 Methods of Socialization used by the community Operant (effect emerges from acting): Techniques: Reinforcement, Extinction, Punishment, Feedback, and Learning by doing. Cognitive (effect emerges from information processing) Techniques: Instruction, Setting Standards, and Reasoning Sociocultural (effect emerges from conforming) Techniques: Group pressure, Tradition, Rituals/Routines, and Symbols Apprenticeship (effect emerges from guided participation) Techniques: Structuring, Collaboration, and Transferring Slide 6 Religion and churches are vital institutions the communities. They serve various functions in the community. It can range from helping the homeless, to charity events, and going on field trips. This is a good way for children to meet other children in their faith, and become active leaders in their community. Church as a Community Institution Slide 7 Child Care Center: Development and Socialization Children in child care are exposed to many other children and learn the skills to play and be friends with them. They are also exposed to children from other cultures, ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds. Its important for children to have interaction with each other by playing, doing art projects and other various activities; which they will learn to socialize better instead of staying home where their social interaction with other people is limited. Sonyas personal experience and thoughts on working at an after school center At the center where I work, I visited different age levels and noticed how they socialized between themselves. When they are arguing, they are learning how to interact with each other and reaching an agreement. When somebody gets hurt, they learn to support each other. The other day, a child was crying during lunch time and one of his friends asked him, why he was crying, he answered, I want my mom. His friend sat next to him and he put his arm around him so that he would feel better. Then the boy stopped crying and they began to have a good time. I was so happy to see that. I think after school child care programs play an important role for children to learn to socialize. I think if you are a parent and enroll your child in an child in a child care setting, you are helping your child to be able to socialize with other kids and its very important for their education, growth and social skills. Slide 9 Girls/Boys Scouts: Detailed Focus Both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are involved in community service projects. The Boy Scouts are known for their Good Turn, or doing good deeds, like can food drives. Girl Scouts do good deeds as well, such as during the holiday season, they collect toys to contribute to the communitys big Toy Drive for children in need. Slide 10 Good Social Development?? Childrens social development is enhanced by learning to work in a group with their peers where they share common goals and interests and learn values as well as to be good citizens. Boys and Girls Scout Leaders provide good role models too. Children may come from one-parent families where they dont have positive male or female role models to look up to, thus the leaders in Boy or Girl Scouts can fill that spot in their lives. Slide 11 Overall Purpose of Boys/Girls Scouts Furthermore, The Boy Scouts teaches leadership, responsibility and values and Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character and leadership as well. I think everyone should attend a community program to meet other people and learn to interact with new people 8) Why do you think after school programs are important? Slide 21 50 Years Difference Within the past 50 years, there has been a steady increase of after school programs. 50 years ago, there werent any after school programs for children in elementary school, however in junior high and high school they did have sports for the children. Throughout the years there has been a steady increase of after school programs, due to more single parent families, parents are at work more and allowing to give children more choices in various activities. An important role for after school programs is that children are able to attend events or programs which have their interest, and they are able to find other children their age who also love the same activities. The most important role is that children start to learn more about themselves and their capabilities; also attending these events they start to learn social roles. Some activities teach

children how to have self control of emotions, learn about their self concept, and also taught them about empowering achievement. Slide 22 Is this the end?! All in all, community as socialization agent is a great way for children to interact with the community, find friends who also love the same activities as them, and most of all, learning about themselves and the social roles. If there werent any community programs or after school programs in the year 2008 then the lives of children and their family would be very difficult. During this fast moving, flourishing time in the U.S. history we depend on the community programs and schools to help take care of our children. As for the saying, It takes a village (community) to raise a child, it means that we all need to take a part in help raising not only our children, but our neighbors children because they are our future and we need to help the children become positive adults.
