huge earthquake that struck Bohol in October 15, 2013. UMANG after a long hibernation now is active again to bring inspiration to the people of Maribojoc and reafrmed her mission as protector of creation, protector of Gods plan inscribed in nature, protector of one another and the environment as a challenge given by Pope Francis to the people of goodwill. ! UMANG is the acronym of United Maribojochanon Association for Nature Governance. The concerned citizens of Maribojoc united themselves in 1998 to promote environmental protection and now she is back with larger scope of her mission especially to help those who are deeply affected by the 7.2 magnitude temblor that brought out the new face of Maribojoc, the enthusiasm of the Maribojochanons to see the future, the outpouring of generosity as reection of the Divine providence. !
UMANG, as a registered Foundation of the Republic of the Philippines, will do its part in response to the Governments call for private partnership in social and humanitarian development, particularly in Municipal and Provincial levels. With the able leadership of the Board of Trustees, Incorporators, and the native clergy of Maribojoc as advisers, Maribojoc will rise again from the rubbles of fears and confusions after that devastating earthquake in coordination with the responsible local government unit, Church ofcials, and the civil society.! As a native Maribojochanon and a voice from afar, I would like to enjoin all Maribojochanons throughout the world to take part on this noble mission. We only have one Maribojoc and her beauty is captivating where one cannot afford not to love her and her people. ! UMANG Foundation, Inc. vows to protect and sustain her beauty as our inheritance to the future generation. UMANG also will help develop the children as good citizens and faithful believers to the gospel of love through her educational program. As protector of Gods plan inscribed in nature, and protector of one another, UMANG will be a potent force to uphold life from womb to its natural death, defend the sanctity of marriage and family, and to bring back and sustain the essence of faith into the life of the sons and daughters of Maribojoc.!

For almost 16 years ago, United Maribojochanon Association for Nature Governance Foundation, Inc. is insisting and encouraging the people of Maribojoc to protect our natural resources. Dr. Jorge de las Alas of the University of the Philippines, Sec. Heherson Alvarez of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), secretary at that time supported the undertakings of UMANG. In fact in Manila Bulletin issued on May 29, 1998, Dr. Angel Alcala More on Maribojoc Bay. In this newspaper articles, he strongly recommended that Local Government should respect UMANG and assist in the proper management of Maribojoc resources. Thus, he stressed that organizations such as UMANG which do not have hidden agendas are the best managers of local resources. UMANG is now back! armed with a vision, mission, and goals as follows: Our Vision: ! United stewards and protectors of Gods creation, protectors of Gods plan inscribed in nature and the environment, and the enhancement of human advancement and development through advocacy and education. Our Mission: ! To pro-actively promote the care of nature, vigilant of issues that endanger
the environment and people, and take the right stand in their defense through the continuing development and application of local capacities and resources in partnership with the government, church and civil society. Our Goals: 1. To b e c o m e a w a r e o f o u r responsibilities as stewards of the environment. 2. T o w o r k f o r w h o l e s o m e environment for the people. 3. To contribute for a sustainable development of Maribojoc. Environmental awareness/education campaign is the main concern of UMANG in order to promote environmental protection and wise and responsible use of local natural resources. Another concern of UMANG is on our ecosystem that perhaps is neglected more than any others. The richness of biodiversitythe coral reefs, the flora and fauna. Aside from ecological and environmental concerns, UMANG will also embark in the long-term mission on education where we envisioned that no children left behind in Maribojoc because of poverty. We envisioned a

A Long journey begins with a single step, and this is the image of Maribojoc. Like a baby trying to stand and walk after a long time of crawling. Yes, Maribojoc is on this stage walking towards a long journey to its rehabilitation. Maribojoc, the once lovely, the once beautiful and the most religious town of Bohol, has erased her image as a thing of beauty which was a joy forever. Everything has gone to rubbles and dust. The majestic beauty of Mount Padhan has been scraped by the great earthquake, leaving only the scars of landslide. Now, Maribojoc is slowly getting up from its great fall, preparing herself towards recovery. The pains, the stress and the trauma begins to heal and it begins with a single step toward its long journey. Relief assistance from abroad and local agencies are still pouring in to help the Maribojochanons. Filipinos from abroad, though they are not from Maribojoc, joined hands to alleviate the pains encountered by the people. Taiwan people, with big hearts sent their rescue, through our brother-priest Father Loloy Napiere. Asians as they are they identified our situation. Through their financial support our church and SVI admin building will be constructed. This is a great challenge for us to rise with a Rizalian candor, and prove to the whole world that we will rise again. UMANG the native crab herewith will come out of its shell and answer the Clarion call for working together for a noble cause. This maiden issue of Bugjong is basically to introduce UMANG Foundation, Inc. to the public as their partner in human, social, environmental, and spiritual development. !"#$%&'()*+*,-.&-,)/,$.0&1$%&&

HISTORY! SPOTLIGHT
UMANG HISTORY
In 1996, when the town of Maribojoc was threatened with environmental destruction by some unscrupulous investors and local government officials during the advent of the NPC Power Barge 101 and cement mining threat in the mountains of Maribojoc, some concerned Maribojochanons led by the then Parish Priest of Maribojoc, Fr. Mario Agunod and Fr. Eliseo Napiere, MSP, a priest native of Maribojoc, started the campaign for environmental protection. The campaign lasted for few years through environmental awareness program by inviting top brass environmental specialists in the Philippines in the persons of Dr. Angel Alcala, the then Chairman of the Commission of Higher Education (CHED), Sec. Heherson Alvares, the Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Dr. Jorge de las Alas, the Professor of Environmental Science in UP Dilliman, and other environmental personalities. Other activities that the UMANG rendered during that time was a medical mission performed by some medical practitioners from Manila led by Dr. Jaime Montoya of the Philippines General Hospital. Wyeth Pharmaceutical donated medicines for the poor and indigent families in Maribojoc. Some basic medical equipments were also given to UMANG and donated to Gallares Memorial Hospital. Rustan's department store in Manila donated school uniforms for the 9

children. The Knights of the Order of Malta was the UMANG regular donor of nutritious drinks for the elderly and the children, and some concerned civil societies in the Philippines who supported the UMANG's projects financially, like the Catholic Businessmen's Association (CBA) in Manila who sponsored a livelihood project in Busao in 1999. UMANG also sponsored a pro-life campaign with the presence of Fr. Habiger, the then president of Human Life International based in Front Royal, Virginia, U.S.A. Aside from basic social services and educational campaign, UMANG also engaged in environmental advocacies, like public demonstrations against environmental destructions, dialogues and negotiations in provincial and municipal levels with some investors and local government units for the protection of environment. In 1997, the group of concerned Maribojochanons decided to officially register the UMANG organization as a Foundation to be registered in Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) through the help of the Environmental Legal Assistance Center (ELAC) in Tagbilaran City. Atty. Raul Barbarona facilitated the formal organization and the group decided to name it United Maribojochanons Association for Nature Governance (UMANG) Foundation, Inc. and named the first Officers and membersincorporator of the foundation.

One peaceful wednesday morning on October 15, 2013, when people started their day at home enjoying a day break for it was a holiday celebrating the feast of the sacrice for the Muslim community, Id-ul-Adha, a big temblor struck Bohol and in few minutes destroyed what have been built for centuries, and years. People crumbled to the ground for safety not knowing what lies ahead after the big temblor. People described it as end of the world, some ran for safety to a higher ground from a possible rise of seawater and tsumanis. ! That was the infamous day for Bohol and particularly for a peaceful, beautiful town of Maribojoc. Few minutes after that fateful 8:12 a.m. everything turns into rubbles. The beautiful centuries old Church was pulverized, houses attened, bridges broken, lives turned miserable, and Maribojoc was cut-off from the rest of Bohol and of the world. ! The temblor brought out the best of humanity, where people poured out their help. International and local 11

humanitarian relief missions rushed to help the devastated people to give them hope and lifes new beginning. ! Yo u n g v o l u n t e e r s o r g a n i z e d themselves to bring back dignity and honor to the victims. Bangon Maribojoc was formed and online coordination was established as channel for the generous Maribojochanons abroad to help their own people back home.!
Maribojoc is now slowly getting back on her feet because of the heroism of these young volunteers who touched the lives, picked up and gathered the broken pieces for a new beginning. The generous donors who became the reection of the Divine providence, their concerns, and care are Gods actual intervention to give hope to those who are in despair. Those beautiful things that happened must be sustained to continually raise Maribojoc from the rubbles of miseries and pains. Then UMANG rose from a long hibernation to help build the future and bring back the former glory Maribojoc used to have. ! lmn!
PROPOSED LONG-TERM PROJECT FOR IMMEDIATE IMPLEMENTATION:! Submitted by: Mrs. Policronia Garsuta!
INTRODUCTION: It is noted that a Catholic Private Pre-school like the Immaculate Mother School in Maribojoc, Bohol has turned over graduates who are academically prepared for the next higher level of education and whose character, values and prayer habits are well developed.
BACKGROUND: The pre-school ran by the Dominican Sisters in Maribojoc, Bohol, the Immaculate Mother School was established in 1995. In 1996, it was given temporary permit by the Department of Education (DepEd) to open and operate preschool course. This renewal of temporary permit was done until 1998. In 1999, the school applied for government recognition and was approved by the Department of Education (DepEd). Up to this time, the school enjoyed the recognition by the government because it has maintained the standard set by the Department. The pre-school course in Maribojoc offered nursery level which last only two (2) hours per day and Kinder 1 level lasts for two and a half hours per day. Each level was handled by the Dominican Sisters. There were only three Dominican Sisters in the School. One of them was the school principal. Unfortunately, the contract between the Dominical Sisters and the Diocese of Tagbilaran for the use of the school site inside the Church perimeter ends this March, 2014. In March, the Immaculate Mother School was transferred to Bilar, Bohol. Through this development, there would be no pre-school in Maribojoc in the following school years. This would be a great lose to the people in the locality. The concerned people of Maribojoc wanted to continue what the Dominican Sisters had started, a school for the children. In response to the pressing need of education for the children, UMANG Foundation, Inc. responded with the desire to provide a holistic education for the children of Maribojoc with a vision NO Children in Maribojoc left behind. And soon, hopefully, a San Pedro Calungsod Mission School be established. Continuation at page 16

reorganized themselves to reawaken UMANG from a deep hibernation. ! As UMANG started to wake up, she found out so much need for Maribojoc. To mention the few concerns out of many is the reconstruction of Sta. Cruz Church which was ruined by the earthquake, then the St. Vincent Institute, the only Catholic School in Maribojoc that produces Bishop, priests, nuns, and other professions of different elds. The Immaculate Mother kindergarten which was ran by the sisters of the Dominican Daughters of Immaculate Mother will be closed due to nonrenewal of their contract with the Diocese, with their absence the

the kindergarten pupils will be left behind without somebody taking care of their basic education. The mining company is back to explore through quarrying the Maribojoc mountains for possible limestone mining operations. These are only few of the many concerns in Maribojoc now.! UMANG Foundation, Inc., as a civic faith-base organization doesnt want to stay in hibernation forever doing nothing for the advancement of Maribojoc and for the protection of environment and people. As a registered foundation, UMANG will help raise funds for our Parish for the reconstructions of the Centuries-old Church, and the Saint Vincent

Effects of the 7.2 Magnitude Earthquake on the Coral Reefs of Maribojoc, Bohol !
On October 15, 2013, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the province of Bohol. This earthquake was generated by the North Bohol Fault (NBF), a newly discovered fault that produced surface ruptures, seismic disturbances, liquefaction, and earthquake-induced landslides. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), a sea-ward shift of the high tide mark after the earthquake was observed by the residents in Barangay Punta Cruz, Maribojoc. This shift in high tide mark may imply that Maribojoc is on the upthrown block of the reverse NBF. The PHIVOLCS measured the shift to be about 50 meters."(Fig. 1).
One of the municipalities greatly affected by the earthquake is Maribojoc where the Punta Cruz Marine Sanctuary is located (geographic coordinates: (1.) 9 4 " 359.61 N, 123 4744.97E, " (2.) 9 4352.21N, " 123 4742.30E, " (3.) 9 4351.91N, " 123 4756.89E, " and (4.) 9 " 4359.63N, 123 " 4758.37E) (Fig. 2). This 10-ha marine sanctuary was established in 2004 by the local Municipal Ordinance No. 29, Series of 2004 (Asedilla, 2004).Monitoring results from 2010 deemed the coral cover inside the sanctuary to be good and described the substrate as follows; (Table 1). 17 BUGJONG

Damage to various coral species became evident in the sanctuary (Fig. 7). Coral colonies were raised upward by local terrain uplifts; No longer submerged by seawater, exposed brain corals and branching coral recruits within the sanctuary started bleaching.! A similar incident occurred on March 28, 2005, when an earthquake struck the island of Simeulue, Indonesia (Environment News Service, 2007). None of the many coral colonies exposed by the earthquake survived. On April 2, 2007, the coral surrounding Ranongga, Solomon Island were also exposed when the island was raised about 10 feet by a major earthquake (National Geographic, 2010). More recently, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake destroyed half of the coral reefs around Honduras; A large part of the damage was attributed to avalanching effects, a sliding of the lagoonal reefs in the area into deeper water (Ecological Society of America, 2011).! Following the destruction of coral reefs around Bohol Island, a detailed assessment will be made to record the extent of the damage in Maribojoc and the coastlines of neighbouring municipalities. The results of the assessment may assist local government units with planning feasible, long-term monitoring and management efforts toward the goal of coral reef rehabilitation in the area.! EXTRA!!!!
FR. LOLOY NAPIERE, MSP! by: C. Tea Ed B. Regidor Meet Fr. Loloy Napiere, MSP in persona as on the screen. A breed of Maribojoc, the founder of UMANG FOUNDATION and a zealous worker in the Lords vineyard. He belongs to everybody yet he is not owned by somebody. Gods plan for the rehabilitation of Maribojoc is channeled through Fr. Loloy. He is a living legacy of love and undying service without counting the cost. When the UMANG Foundation feels the burden too heavy to bear and the task too impossible, Fr. Loloy is always there to lighten the load by placing his hands on the wheels. Commendable, isnt it? We can never nd a person like him, whose all out support for the people of Maribojoc is unlimited. He responded, encouraged, and mobilized people to help, from the 7.2 Magnitude earthquake in Bohol to the fury of Yolanda in Eastern Samar bringing tons of assorted relief goods and millions of pesos to the Diocese of Borongan and to Maribojoc given by the generous people of Taiwan through him. ! ! I guess Fr. Loloy has a few sleeping hours. Most of his time is spent for planning on how to scaffold the limping town of Maribojoc. His proposals are meant not only for his townspeople but to the whole province of Bohol in general. God is the architect in the rehabilitation of Maribojoc, Fr. Loloy is the foreman and we, the members of United Maribojochanon Association for Nature Governance Foundation, Inc., are the carpenters or implementors in rebuilding our town. ! Fr. Loloy is the man! A missionary! A servant of God!
