Some peop)e may be thinking, =6kay, (&$e got the pub)isher, my book has been re)eased, my 1ob is done, right4> /"63?, 3ow that you are a pub)ished author, your work is only beginning' ( had a %on$ersation with my soon@to@be mother@in@)aw a ew weeks ago about my author %areer, and she raised a very good point7as an author, we ha$e %ertain responsibi)ities not on)y to ourse)$es, but to our ans as we))' 3ow that our dream o being an author is a rea)ity, it&s time to take a step ba%k, re@ e$a)uate yourse) and ask the a))@important AuestionB =/hat do ( do neCt4> /hi)e that is a $ery )arge, and di i%u)t Auestion to answer, it is a $ery important one indeed' Dou need to make sure that you keep up your image on so%ia) media websites, and you need to wat%h what you say' #his is espe%ia))y true or new authors 1ust starting out in the ie)d' /hether you want to be)ie$e it or not, your ans, riends, ami)y, and e$en your %oworkers are now buying and reading your book' #hey may e$en be si)ent)y o))owing your :a%ebook posts, your #weets or e$en your b)og posts' #he bottom )ine4 /at%h what you say and or do on)ine' Dou may post something that you don&t think is o ensi$e, but somebody e)se %ou)d misinterpret a post you write, and it %ou)d %ause unne%essary drama' #his drama %an not on)y make the person o ended )ook bad, but you )ook bad as we))' :rom what ( ha$e )earned rom my own persona) eCperien%e, is that it is better to )ea$e posts about po)iti%s and re)igion o o your author pages, and b)ogs' -*n)ess you )ike the heat and drama, then by a)) means, go or the go)d,.' 3ot a%%ording to tons o peop)e out there in writing)and' #hey a)) swear they don&t out)ine' And i you&re one o them, ( think that this )itt)e essay may make you rethink the who)e %on%ept' +ere&s a samp)ing o a ew de initions o an 6ut)ineB a' A genera) des%ription %o$ering the main points o a sub1e%tB an out)ine o Ameri%an )iterature' b' A statement summarizing the important points o a teCt' %' A summary o a written work or spee%h, usua))y ana)yzed in headings and subheadings' F' A pre)iminary dra t or p)an o a pie%e o writing' As you %an see, based on these de initions, e$eryone has a menta) idea o what they wi)) be writing about' #hat&s rea))y an out)ine' So why are so many s%ared o the term Gout)ine&4 (t&s the basi% bui)ding b)o%k o e$erything we do' ?etting up in the morning you run through a series o things you want to get done today' #hat&s a p)an, or a )ist, or a set o goa)s, or an agenda and yes, it&s an out)ine' /e were taught a kind o out)ining way ba%k in high s%hoo) and it has probab)y done more to s%are tons o writers o the notion that an out)ine %an be he)p u) than any other reason' And Mi%roso t /ord %opied it' Dou know the one, where you get to modi y it so that the out)ine points %an show up as numbers, )etters or e$en roman numera)s' 6ne drawba%k with /ord&s out)ine ( ound was that it&s impossib)e to use the out)ining eature in any kind o pra%ti%a) manner' (t&s 1ust too %umbersome to use' By the time you read this arti%)e, (&)) ha$e parti%ipated in the 0 !ay Annua) Labour -(t&s Canadian, eh4. !ay no$e) writing %ontest or the 5th year'

Buster the )itt)est hobo ByB Ste$en Bergeron 6n%e upon a time on the )ower eastside o the $i))age )i$ed a shy boy named !a$ey' !aye&s parents ga$e him e$erything a )itt)e boy e$er wanted' !a$ey&s )a%k o riends sent him on a 1ourney or a )i etime %ompanion' #he )itt)est hobo had a)ways been !a$ey&s a$orite program' Eust one day he hoped to ind a hobo o his own' !own the road there he was about to )ink into !a$ey&s )i e' As !a$ey rounded the %orner he saw a sma)) brown nosed miniature ?erman Sheppard )imping on his wounded paw in sear%h o a )onesome sou) to aid him o his predi%ament' !a$ey pro%eeded with %aution as his ather a)ways warned him' =Be %autious when approa%hing stray anima)s' Dou ne$er know where they&$e been'> As !a$ey )ooked deep into his eyes he knew no harm was to be had' #hey were instant %ompanionsM !a$ey e$en went as ar as naming him Buster @ simp)y be%ause he )ooked )ike a Buster to him' +is ather had %ome up with numerous reasons why !a$ey ought not to get too atta%hed to Buster' #he best being' =#here might be another )itt)e boy missing Buster as we speak'> /eeks had now past as no one e$er made an attempt to %)aim Buster as their own' !a$ey )o$ed Buster, Buster )o$ed !a$ey' /hene$er !a$ey was not in s%hoo) they&d sti%k )ike g)ue, their best pastime being sitting there en1oying their peanut butter %ookies' !uring the summer months, they&d spend time down by the )ake' #hey %ou)dn&t go as ar as p)a%ing a sing)e pie%e o )uggage into the %ar without Buster wagging his tai) in eC%itement' By the )ake they&d go boating, ishing, hiking, hunting N about $ery ad$enture a )itt)e boy %ou)d get himse) into' 6ne winter though !a$ey was sure Buster was a goner' *pon waking up one morning a ter a re%ord b)izzard !a$ey )ooked out, to his amazement a)) he saw was the tip o Buster&s house' !a$ey ran out sho$e) in hand and began sho$e)ing )ike ne$er sho$e)ed be ore' As he rea%hed Buster&s house he opened the %arpeted )ap and )ooked in amazement, and he ound Buster a)) %ur)ed up in the %orner keeping himse) warm unti) !a$ey&s arri$a)' Dears had now passed as o)d age and arthritis got the best o Buster' !a$ey remained )i$ing a)one in sear%h o his )i etime sou) mates' Many o pets had %ome into !a$ey&s )i e but none seemed to %)i%k )ike !a$ey and Buster'

6n%e, a )ong time ago, there was a young man, his name was :)oyd' +e be)ie$ed that )o$e %ou)d o$er%ome anything' E$ery now and then, a ter work, :)oyd wou)d take the bus to the downtown restaurant %a))ed, =Bus #ermina)>' A)though the ood here was de)i%ious and appetizing, it wasn&t the rea) reason why :)oyd wou)d %ome to the restaurant' 3o, there was another reason, whi%h had nothing at a)) to do with ood' #he waitress, Eeannine, a)ways ser$ed the %ustomers who %ame into the restaurant, she a)ways ser$ed :)oyd, she wou)dn&t want to admit it, but he was her number one %ustomer' Eeannine&s bri))iant mind and beauti u) a%e %aught :)oyd&s eye' /hen Eeannine wou)d ask :)oyd what he&d )ike, :)oyd wou)d end up tripping o$er his words and somehow end up saying si))y things, )ike =Baked 2otato with #@bone roses and )o$ab)e honey N gar)i% kiss sau%e p)ease>, he wou)d Aui%k)y %orre%t himse) and try to ignore Eeannine&s %on used eCpression' 6ne day, :)oyd had an idea' +e de%ided to be %heap, or in other words = )irt> with Eeannine' A ter :)oyd paid her the money, as he was wa)king out the door, :)oyd took a penny out o his po%ket, p)a%ed it on the tab)e and started to wa)k out' Eeannine stared at the penny in disgust, pi%ked it up rom the tab)e, and threw it at :)oyd' +e kept a short smi)e, and wa)ked out heading home' +e didn&t pi%k up the penny, be%ause he had gi$en it to her' Months passed, :)oyd was sti)) going to the =Bus #ermina)>, same as a)ways, but Eeannine pretended to orget about what had happened, but %ou)dn&t he)p but show a sma)) smirk' #he neCt day, :)oyd de%ided to go the =Bus #ermina)> again' A sign o disappointment stroke his a%e, as Eeannine wasn&t here' Ok. +e iguredB She must have called in sick, everybody gets sick sometimes. #o be riend)y, :)oyd bought a bouAuet o roses, and to)d one o the other waitresses to gi$e it to Eeannine when she got ba%k' /eeks passed, Eeannine sti)) hadn&t returned, sur)y it %ou)dn&t ha$e been be%ause o the penny tip, %ou)d it4 #hat was months ago, :)oyd had no idea Eeannine was in troub)e' =:)oyd, :)oyd,> a waitress %a))ed' =Des4> asked :)oyd' =#here&s a note or you on the %ounter, it&s rom Eeannine> she said' :)oyd rushed o$er to the resh pie%e o paper sitting on the %ounter, Eeannine&s beauti u) neat handwriting said, =:)oyd, ( need your he)p, (ndians ha$e taken me away to a araway is)andM ( don&t know where it is, 2)ease he)p me get out o here, +urry, Lo$e, Eeannine'> :)oyd rushed down the streets o Cornwa)), right down to the ri$er' #here was an abandoned boat nearby, he hurried to it and hopped inside' #he )itt)e %anoe ro%ked a bit, but :)oyd de%ided he wou)d do whate$er it takes to res%ue Eeannine rom the (ndians' :)oyd s)ow)y dri ted away rom shore, into the wide@open b)ue' At irst, it wasn&t so badM but s)ow)y, it began to get worse' :)oyd heard the %ra%k)e o thunder, the wa$es got September 2011 Page 14

bigger and stronger, and )ightning stroke' (t ro%ked the boat ba%k and orth, side to side, e$entua))y, the boat kept on tipping, unti) ina))y, it )ipped o$er, :)oyd was a)right, but his boat was torn to pie%es, he grabbed the %)osest broken board he %ou)d ind' :)oyd %)imbed on to it, shi$eringM he ki%ked his eet, ina))y approa%hing shore' #he )and was u)) o trees, in some areas )at, and there was )ight in a distan%e' :)oyd approa%hed the %ommotion, ho)ding ba%k his ear he 1umped out o the bushes to see strange men with no shirts or shoes on' #hey were dan%ing around a ire pit' #here was one )ady, with brown hair, and a $ery pretty a%e, but a $ery rightened eCpression' She was tied to a po)e by the ire pit' (t didn&t take )ong or :)oyd to rea)ize who this woman was' #he woman who %aught his eye or months, being sa%ri i%ed by a group o (ndians, was the one and on)y, Eeannine' :)oyd hesitated to approa%h the group, but sudden)y had an idea' An (ndian&s set o %)othes was )ying on a )arge ro%k' +e Aui%k)y snat%hed the %u)tura) garments and headed into the bushes' +e %ame out )ooking )ike a rea) (ndianM he started dan%ing )ike them, and de%ided it wou)d be a good idea to sing as we))' #he %hie o the (ndians stepped into the %ir%)e and approa%hed :)oyd' =/ho are the4 Me no see be ore> asked the %hie ' :)oyd a)most ta)ked norma), but soon %orre%ted himse) B =Me tra$e)er, me )ost, and me want to 1oin %u)ture,> answered :)oyd' Eeannine stared at :)oydM she %ou)dn&t make out whom he rea))y was, unti) :)oyd ga$e her a short wink' =/hat you wink or4> asked the %hie ' =Me not )ost, Me angry, Dou stea) poor )ady,> shouted :)oyd' =Dou %ome to res%ue me sa%ri i%e4 3o,> shouted the %hie ' =Des, ( re use to )et you sa%ri i%e su%h a beauti u) women, 3ow p)ease gi$e her to me,> said :)oyd' =3o, 3e$er,> said the %hie ' A)) the (ndians stared at :)oyd and %ame %)oser and %)oser to him unti) he was surrounded' Me no scared! #hunder %rashed o$erhead, ratt)ing the windows and e e%ti$e)y shaking me out o my stupor' /hat was ( doing4 /hy was ( sitting here4 My heart ra%ed in my %hest as ( 1umped to my eet' Something b)a%k and white )uttered to the %arpet at my eet' ( bent down to pi%k it up and e)t a stab o )oss in my %hest as my eyes s%anned the tear stained )etter on%e again' (&d ound the )etter an hour ago, though its %ontents were twenty years in the making' I loved you then and I love you now I will love you until my last breath leaves my body Were both free to pursue whatever we want what Ill never understand is how you can say youll never want me. #ears burned in my throat as my mind %on1ured a pi%ture o him' #hi%k dark hair ( knew was as so t as it )ookedM $ibrant green eyes that a)ways he)d a smi)eM u)) )ips that )e t iery trai)s where$er they tou%hed on my body' ( knew him better than myse) ' ( loved him more than ( )o$ed myse) N and that was why ( had to )et him go' ( %ou)dn&t be with him when my )i e N my heart N was sti)) so messed up' ( %rump)ed the )etter in my hand as ( %o))apsed to my knees on the )oor' /hy had this happened4 +ow %ou)d ( be gi$en this gi t N to be reunited a ter twenty years on)y to be kept apart again4 ( )ooked up abo$e the irep)a%e in ront o me, my eyes sear%hing or those o my dead husband, as they had been sear%hing or him sin%e that ate u) night two years ago' +is smi)e in the )arge pi%ture seemed mo%king, as though he was happy where$er he was but ( ne$er wou)d be' Anger swe))ed within me but then dissipated 1ust as Aui%k)y' #hat wasn&t right' +ow many times had #om and ( ta)ked about the possibi)ity o one o us dying be ore the other4 (n a%t, #om had e$en teased me about seeking out "yan and spending the rest o my )i e with him N the same man ( was now )etting get away' ( straightened my shou)ders and he)d my head high as ( %ontinued to )ook at #om&s pi%ture' +is smi)e now seemed en%ouraging, a)most teasing )ike he was asking what ( was waiting or' ( %)ambered to my eet, thank u) my parents had taken the kids or the weekend as ( rea)ized what ( had to do' =( )o$e you, but you ne$er wanted me to )i$e this way,> ( to)d the pi%ture and dashed a%ross the room towards the door' ( ye)ped as my eyes e)) on the %)o%k on the mi%rowa$e' FB2<' ( had an hour to get to the airport and ind "yan' ( grabbed my purse, s)id my eet into )ight brown mo%%asins and ran out the door, bare)y remembering to )o%k it behind me' ( 1umped into the %ar and pu))ed on my seatbe)t as ( started the engine N the )ast thing ( needed was to miss "yan be%ause (&d been pu))ed o$er or not wearing a seatbe)t' ( ba%ked out o the dri$eway and sped down the street, heading towards the interstate' ( turned on my wipers to %)ear the windshie)d, surprised to see the rain had stoppedM the weather ore%ast had %a))ed or thunderstorms a)) a ternoon' September 2011 Page 16

I pulled away from the kiss with a sigh. "yan was the most wonderful man# why couldnt I have met him first$ %I love you,& we said at the same time, both of us smiling.
