Positive Components: School and the education it provides you are free of charge. Multiple resources such as libraries Extra-Curricular activities are offered within school School is a safe environment for all that attend School helps individuals build a social base There are multiple courses in school to chose and learn from Helps students build their aspirations and goals Accessible to those with physical disabilities Extra help programs are available to those in need Encourages people to give back to their communities (volunteer hours)
Negative Components: With a large number of diverse students; bullying could occur. This could be prevented by giving harsh punishment to those who bully. It could also be prevented by installing a sense of sympathy within the general public. Freedom of expression is limited within schools. It stops students from expressing themselves in ways that the superiors find inappropriate. This could be changed by giving students equal freedom of expression in comparison to the average person in society. Many compulsory courses (such as math) challenge and sometimes deter student's success within school. This could be altered so that students have more of a selection of their desired courses from younger grades within high school. Many sports teams/clubs are unable to gain funds to satisfy their needs. This should be changed so that it is a more even spread of school funds and those funds are not only primarily given to the schools major teams.
PART 2
D RESS C ODE
o This would be reformed to allow students to be more expressive in the way they dress. Not limiting them to what the school finds acceptable yet to what society finds acceptable. Giving them the same rights they would have if they were not within school This needs to be changed because it restricts ones freedom of expression. It makes one conform to what a certain demographic deems proper. It does not take into account what the opinion of everyone else is. It also interferes with people's time when being punished for violating this code.
This reform would be a better choice due to the fact that it is more practical. it gives students a sense of responsibility in how they dress. It also shows a sense of trust in students. It gives people freedom of expression in how they dress. The final reason as to why this reform is a better reform is this reform gives a student the same rights they were to have if they were not in school.
C URRICULUM
o This would be reformed by giving students much more of a choice at an earlier grade level. Instead of a student choosing two electives in gr.9 and 3 in gr.10 it would be doubled. Giving students more of a choice of what they would like to learn and what they would like to pursue. This needs to be changed because not everyone enjoys what they are currently learning in their compulsory courses. Many also do not pursue careers that would require knowledge within those courses. In many cases these courses interfere in a students learning. By challenging them to the point of failure. In multiple cases it could prohibit one from excelling within their lives. This reform is better because it encourages students to learn what they would like to learn. By making less classes mandatory it would cause one to excel in school; by making them pursue classes that they will use in the future.
S CHOOL S CHEDULE
o o I would reform the school schedule by making it start 2 hours earlier and end 2 hours later. Causing school to start at 6:45 am and end at 1:45 pm. This needs to be changed due to the fact that it can be improved. It does not prepare you for adult hood in which you will have to arrive to work at much earlier times or travel long distances. It also gives students longer afternoons which would be preferred by many. This would be a better reform due to the fact that it gives students more time to work on school work. It also ensures that students get to sleep earlier. This would also be more efficient because it would help students prepare for careers. In which they would have to work early hours or commute.
