Fanshawe College unveiled a
new logo on April 2 as part of its
nine-monthbrandingpractice. The
logo, dubbed NorthStar, has since
garnered media attention due to
similarities to a hate symbol
accordingtosome.
The new Fanshawe College
logo sort of looks likeaSwastika.
#Fanshawe #hateit and Cool
swastika, bro. Fanshawe College
launches new brand and logo lon-
don.ctvnews.ca/f anshawe-
colle were just two of the
many tweets and comments that
flooded in after the Colleges
announcement.
The College remains positive,
however, and stands by its new
logo.
When symbols change, it is
reasonable to expect some mixed
reviews, said Tony Frost, execu-
tive director of reputation and
brand management in a release
sent to staff. In recent days some
have voiced concern that the logo
may resemble a symbol of hate.
This is a serious claim and we
regret that our logomayhavebeen
misinterpretedinsuchaway.
Frost, after doing research,
likened the situation to Columbia
Sportwears own brush with con-
troversy.
Itsasimilar kindof style; itsa
rotated square and [has] straight
lines, hesaid. [Columbia] is run
by a J ewish family. In fact, a
J ewish family that escaped from
Nazi Germany. Itsquiteclear they
didnt producealogotolooklikea
swastika, but they get trappedinto
thislook by somepeoplewhocrit-
icizeit.
Frost said the previous logo,
which launched in 1981, received
similar feedback.
The previous logo was also
criticizedfor lookinglikeaswasti-
ka, he said. People today dont
say that. People come around and
they seeit andthey accept it.
Professor of J ewish Studies and

I felt maybe I was a little bit
over sensitive so once I saw the
logo I picked up my phone and
trundled on down the hallways
here at Huron College and asked
sevenpeopleandof theseven, six
immediately said they saw a
swastika when I asked the ques-
tion, What doyousee?
Frost said the College will not
rethink the logo and said it is not
functionally realistic to go back
tosquareone.
Theres always peoplewho are
unhappy with what you deliver,
but thats okay, he said. At the
endof theday peoplearepassion-
ate about it. People love the
Fanshawe brand. Id rather have
that than have people say they
dont really care.
It was revealed that out of over
2,500 respondents to a survey,
NorthStar was preferred two to
one.
Istheworst over?Frost seemsto
think so.
We monitor social media and
traditional media all the time.
When this came out, there was a
blip and its died off to now [on

People have moved on. We
dont anticipate that there is an
issue.
Frost hopesthepublicwill come
around.
[I hope] that people give it
time. Give it a chance, he said.
The process that we went

Everything precious is in danger, so says
Wendell Berry in a November 2013 inter-
view with journalist Bill Moyers. When
Berry thinks of precious things he is not
thinking of my new smart phone, engage-
ment rings, original recordings of Nirvana,
or the stone I picked up from the Pacific
shore four years ago. He is thinking of the
polar icecaps, animals onthelist of endan-
geredspecies, air, your childrenbornor yet
to be born, soil, rivers, gentle people and
beautiful landscapes.
In Noah, Noah knows that something is
wrong. His world is scorched by industry.
Men and women assume that they become
more human by wielding power. And the
greatest menarethosewhohavethecourage
tocommit themost powerful of all acts, tak-
inghumanlife.
Noah is more direct than Berry is. Noah
names the source of our violence and our
willingness to exchange paradise for a pair
of dice. Weexploit theresourcesandbeauty
of the entire globe, gambling that by some
miracle of technology we will avoid the
environmental catastrophes that scientists
have been forecasting now for decades.
Noah, like any respectable character in the
Bible, callsit sin.
True, not all sinissin. Someof it mayjust
be ignorance. We dont always know that
what we are doing is bad. And there are
many shades of blame and misinformation,
innocenceandknowledge, guilt andfailure.
But there it is: the name for our violence,
self-centeredness, deception, andself-decep-
tion. Sin.
Many precious things arelost every gen-
eration. At present our losses involve not
only the integrity of our planetary home, a
gift from God. In danger (as always) are
healthyminds, caringfamilies, innocent pre-
teenandteenyears, thelovebetweenparent
and child, loyalty to siblings and grandpar-
ents, words of truth, gestures of healing, the
valuing of life, politics of compassion, and
economies of care. All too often we take
these things for granted, allowing themto
whither, whilewepursuethenext travel fad,
cheap highs, material possessions, money
andwhatever elseadvertisers manipulateus
into wantingso that their clients stock will
rise.
This week, churches all over the planet
will becelebratingGoodFriday andEaster.
Good Friday is the remembrance of the
deathof theSonof God. Hisdeathissever-
al things. It is thepricepaid for sin. It is a
scapegoats death the Son of God taking
sin outside the city where people live, out-
sidewhereit receivesitsreward, death. It is
the final act of violence against God that
spells the coming end to all malicious vio-
lence: the violence of the Lords army, of
terror groups, of inquisitors of old, of the
Hells Angels, and of every other network
that wantstolivebyterror, hubrisandbully-
ing.
Easter a celebration of the resurrection
of the Son of God. A signal that, as aging
singer BobDylanoncewroteinamomentof
clarity, deathis not theend. A signal that
whatever thesuffering of cancer patients in
Londonsoncology units, whatever theago-
niesof themillionsof Indiankidsabandoned
bytheir (desperate) parents, whatever terrors
that America, Russia, Afghanistan, and
Canadas Indian Act have inflicted or will
inflict ontheir victims, they donot havethe
last word. God has it and it will bespoken.

cious will see the light of day when J esus

The scandal-ridden Parti Qubcois, led
by former Premier Pauline Marois, have
packed their bags and handed over the
proverbial keys to provincial Liberal Party
Leader Philippe Couillard. The Parti had
spent theweek beforetheelectionfrantical-
ly denying illegal fundraising accusations
andtryingtodownplay their separatist lean-
ings, which were awkwardly cast into the
limelight by aPQcandidate.
Their efforts weretonoavail as theparty

Thiscouldbethebeginningof theendfor
the Parti Qubcois in la belle province. In
Quebecs provincial politics, theres always
been a very clear pattern of flip-flopping
betweentheLiberal Partyandthesovereign-
tist partyof theday. Sincethe70sthecycle
has been on a nine-year loop with Liberal
Leader J eanCharest leadingthelast provin-
cial Liberal Party in Quebec from2003 to
2012.
Prior to that the Parti Qubcois was in
power for nine years and before that the
Liberalsledtheprovincefrom1984to1995.
This pattern continues on back to 1976, the
year Rene Levesque and the newly formed
Parti Quebecois first cameto power after a
Liberal government of only six years.
Whether or not theresults fromApril 7 are
repeatedthenext timeQuebecersheadtothe
pollstoelect apremier, Maroishasthedubi-
oushonor of leadingher partydirectlyout of
officefaster thanany Quebec premier inthe
historyof theprovince. Shewasinpower for
566days.
Quebecs most staunch sovereigntist par-
ties appear to havefallenout of favour dur-
ing the most recent provincial election, but
the same is true federally. The Bloc
Qubcois runs federally, and only in
Quebec. In2008, Quebec votedto giveThe
Bloc49of 75seatsintheprovince, adefini-
tive margin of over 30 seats more than the
runner-up Liberal Party. Throw in some
accusations of intoleranceandmisspending,
and by the time the next election came
aroundthepeopleof Quebec decimatedThe
Bloc, reducing themto a mere four seats,
less than therequired number to even form
anofficial party.
Sovereignty for Quebec is anissuewitha
broad spectrum of strongly held opinions
concerning it. The Liberal Party of Quebec
deliberately postures itself as a moderate
alternative to the culturally abrasive Parti
Qubcois.
In addition to their own base of support
within the province any blunders by the
Parti, andtherewereplenty, servedto drive
evenmoresupport for theLiberals. Thesov-
ereignty movement in Quebec will need to
reinvent itself if theres to be any hope of
achieving their ultimate goal of independ-
ence.
Whether they will even includethesepa-

ity of the province. The ultimate challenge

represent issues that people actually care

The thing about personal development

that symbiotically occurs alongside the

requires dedicated mental power and hours

That thing being: embracing a socially and

Following love, mirth is undoubtedly the
next most popular subject to be disbursed

down to perspective. Whileeach and every

1. Happinessrequiresbeingopentopossi-

The Residential Tenancies Act covers
most agreements between residential land-
lordsandtenants. Whenyouaredecidingon
a place to live, you should be aware that
landlords sometimes ask for more than just
rent. This article will help you figure out
whichrequestsarelegal, andwhichonesare
not.
Before You Begin Your Tenancy
You can negotiatetheterms of your rent
with your landlord. You and your landlord
can agree to any length of a rental term.
Your landlordcannot forceyoutogivepost-
datedcheques or any pre-authorizedway of
taking money from your bank account or
credit card, but atenant canagreetoprovide
these.
If your landlordasksfor arentdeposit, the
most money that can berequired is for one
rental period. If youhaveagreedtoamonth-
ly tenancy or longer, the maximumis one
months rent. If youhaveagreedto aweek-
by-week tenancy, the maximum is one
weeksrent. Thisamount must beappliedto
your last rental period, and cannot be kept
for any other reason such as cleaning or
damagefees. However, if your rent increas-
es (such as a yearly increase with proper
notice), your landlord can request that you
topup thisdeposit tothenewrent amount.
Therequest for arent deposit must beat or
before the time you formthe rental agree-
ment, andcannotberequestedafter your ten-
ancy starts.
Other Deposits and Charges
Your landlord may also ask for adeposit
for thecost of replacingyour keys or build-
ingaccesscard, but thiscannot bemorethan
theactual cost of replacement. This deposit
must begivenback to youwhenyoureturn
thekeys. Your landlordmayalsochargeyou
afeeif you writeachequeand thereis not
enoughmoneyinyour account. Thisisoften
calledaNSF Feeor abouncedcheque.
Most other fees and charges are illegal,
evenif they arerefundable. Commonillegal
fees, which landlords sometimes try to
charge, areadeposittoholdaunitfor your
tenancy, a damage deposit, a cleaning
deposit, or afindersfee. If youhavepaidan
illegal fee, youhaveoneyear toapplytothe
LandlordandTenant Boardfor your money
back or you may lose your right to get the
money back.
Interest on Deposits
If youhavepaidarent deposit, your land-
lord owes you interest annually on the
amount of therent deposit. Many landlords
forget this, andyoushouldmakearequest in
writingtoreceiveyour interest. If your land-
lord does not giveyou theinterest, you can
deduct theamount of interest fromyour next
rent cheque, but you should include a note
explaining why you have made this deduc-
tion.
If your landlord gives you the proper
noticefor annual rent increases, theinterest
that isowedtoyoumaybeequal totheaddi-
tional amount of rent youarecharged. If this
isthecase, thelandlordmayaddthisinterest
to your deposit, so that the deposit stays at
thevalueof your final monthsrent.
Receipts
Youhavetheright toask for areceipt for
everyrent payment, deposit, charge, andany
other payment madeto your landlord. Your
landlord must give you the receipt free of
charge. Youmay makethis request anytime
during your tenancy, or within a year after
your tenancy ends.

TheInternet beganas aplatformfor peo-
ple to chat. It essentially took the formof
chat rooms that were dedicated to people
who had similar interests, or people who
workedinthesameplace. Basically, it was
for people to get together and talk to other
peopleabout stuff they really liked. Andso,
as the Internet evolved to include many
other seemingly endless, actually func-
tions, onething remained prevalent: people
could connect to one another. Eventually,
what wenowknowassocial mediabeganto
popupwiththelaunchingof Myspace, and
virtual realitygames, andthenFacebookand
YouTube and Twitter. The Internet boom
had an effect on every industry short of
llamafarming, andtheartistssawthat it was
not asbullet proof assomethought.
Artists set up shop in oneof two camps.
They either loved theInternet and believed
it to bethenew frontier of art that brought
excitingwaysof creating, or they complete-
ly shunned it as another tool to bastardize
the sacredness of tactile life. As time has
gone on, the opinions remain more or less
thesame, but thoseembracing theconnect-
edness of theInternet and social media are
being presented with an endless amount of
options.
One interesting website that Ive hap-
peneduponinmy explorationof thewebis
a project called hitRECord. Its an open
collaborative production company whose
aimis to usemany artists to createfinished
pieces of art of all types (music, animation,
films, illustrations, writing).
Itsamouthful, sosimply: theybeginwith
apieceof work that someonehasuploaded,
and members then take turns remixing,
adding, and developing the projects until
theyrecomplete. Then, thecompanybegins
to market the project to the publics non-
members (with the help of the founder, a
well-known and dashing movie star). And
eventually, when theyve gathered enough
art piecesandhype, theyput onshows, pub-
lish books, screen at movie festivals, show
atgalleriesandsplittheprofitwiththemem-
berswhoparticipatedinthecreationsof that
project.
hitRECordisjust oneof many, manycol-
laborativeartistic initiatives ontheInternet,
but it perfectly exemplifies whats possible
with the new interconnectedness thats
available at our fingertips. The Internet
allows us to share information with others.
This can lead to getting and giving advice,
sharingour work, sellingour work, collabo-
ratively creating. Im sure even the most
vivid of imaginations cant anticipate what
technology will advance to, but its innova-
tion has already spurred on our creativity,
and I can imagine that will stop anytime
soon.

Thats why Imexcitedto share
newsof thelatest releasebyindus-

fromToronto, analbumsopower-
ful it will catch and keep your
attentionthroughout.
Duefor releaseApril 15onBuzz
Records, Hard Boiled Soft Boiled
is the bands second full-length
effort officiallyfollowing2011s
Hollandaze and their EP Better
fromlast year though thealbum
has adeeper history withtheband
thanisfirst apparent.
Itsfunny, thisrecordwasactu-
ally finished closed to five years
ago by Dean, explained bassist
DenholmWhale. He flew out to
thewest coast to work with Colin
Stewart, and they got all these
great sessionmusicianstowork on
demosthathehadkickingaround.
An album of contrasts, Hard
Boiled Soft Boiled isaparadox; the
first half of the albumis fast, its
songs clocking in less than three
minutes inlength. Heretheband
Dean Tzenos on guitar, Whale on
bass andJ arodGibsonondrums
use their industrial sound as tools
likeany other, seasoning acertain
punk mentalitywithheavy, trench-
ant tones swiftlyshuttlingthelis-
tener through an explosive
sequence of material before drop-
ping them into the deep grooves
embodiedinthesecondhalf of the
album.
The original concept was to
keepit powerful andquick onone
half, and morepop-oriented, more
atmospheric and ethereal on the
other side, Whalesaid, admittedly
speaking more from his perspec-
tivethan that of Tzenos. It was a
pretty huge undertaking a few
yearsagoandwerefinally ableto
releaseit now, sowethought, why
not?
Leading up to the release,
Odonis Odonis previewedsomeof
the album via SoundCloud a
sampler playlist featuring selected
tracks from the album and an
explosive cover of J ohnny Cashs
RingOf Fire andhavereleased
focus tracks like Angus
Mountain and Order In The
Court, for which they recently
releasedamusic video.
According to Whale, the band
found themselves at a crossroads
around the end of 2012; in the
midst of organizational changes
surrounding the group, they opted
at thetimetonurturenewmaterial
as athree-piecerather thanrelease
Hard Boiled Soft Boiled, which
hadalreadybeenshelvedfor acou-
ple of years, which meant the
releaseof their Better EP first.
A year later, the band felt the
timingismuchmorefortuitousfor
therelease, however not without a
fewtweaksfirst.
Wemadeadecisiononadding
in New Obsession together, and
J arod[Gibson] masteredthewhole
thing, said Whale. It was origi-
nally recorded and mastered by
different people, but wedecidedto
addthesongandgofor adifferent
angle with mastering. Outside of
that, its pretty much identical to
what Dean had recorded years
ago.
In such a way, Whale and
Gibsonwereabletoplacetheir fin-
gerprints on the album, though
Whale isnt without any personal
connection to the record. I heard
this record before I was in the
band; I talked to Dean about
releasing this record when I was
starting up a tape label years ago,
and then next thing I know, I end
upintheband.
Its weird, were taking some-
thing that we originally had no
emotional connectionwithandtry-
ing to deconstruct it and set it up
for a livescenario, hecontinued.
Wedontevenplaysimilar instru-
ments J arodssetupistotallydif-

so weve had to find a way to
deconstruct that whole record and
put it back together in a way that
works for us live, yet still repre-
sentsthat album.

Composed of songwriter and
guitarist Ray Yap, bassist Stew

Yappers areblazing anewtrail in
music fusion, one that is limited
only by their imagination from
conceptiontoperformance.
When I sit down to write, I
really have no idea at all whats
goingtocomeout, saidfront man
Yap, when asked to describe his
styleand direction. Theway this
all started was by writing and
recording music to listen to for
myself, mybandmates, myfriends

I havearecordingstudio that I

theyll go over to the punk side,

Audience response has been
overwhelming. In their hometown

see what their contemporaries are
playingandproducing, but also to
see first-hand how unique their
music and stage show really is,
however, the band is far from
deterred, preparing two sets for
their bignight inLondon.
Weve been getting a great
response from audiences, said

Sliders
Thebest way todescribeSliders
would be junk food TV, and I
meanthat inthebest waypossible,
really. Thestoryof ayoungcollege

universeof unlimitedpossibilities,
it follows Quinn Mallory as he
accidentally drags along his pro-

on him, really) and an unwitting
stranger intheformof Rembrandt
Brown, a has-been soul-singer
from the 70s, as they jump

tofindtheir wayhome. Theshows
premisebasically allows zero con-

Quantum Leap
Predating Sliders, Quantum
Leap bringstheapproachof multi-

Rather than simply hopping
between universes, show protago-
nist Dr. Sam Beckett instead
embodies alternativeuniversever-
sions of himself, meaning that he
gets dropped right plumb into the
middle of a situation he knows
nothing about. With talks of a
movie coming to fruition,
Quantum Leap is a cult favourite
youshoulddefinitely look at.
Farscape
Starting at the tail end of the
90s, Farscape was a show with
one of the most rabid fan bases
around. So unquenchable were
they that the numerous petitions
theysignedleadtothefundingof a
miniseries to make up for the
fourthseasonscliffhanger ending.
Following earth astronaut J ohn
Crichtons adventures as his
NASA shuttleis launchedinto the
far end of the universe right
between an ongoing war between
various alien factions, Farscape
never takesitself tooseriously, the
characters maintaining a sense of
humour withoutcompromisetothe
excellent storyline. Available on
Netflix too!
The X-files
Even with all the jokes about
David Duchovnys monotone
voice and Scullys idiotic stub-
bornness against the paranormal
well into theshows later seasons,
The X-Files is a strong 90s sci-fi
show that carried on well into the
2000s, and necessarily for the
best. At thevery least, if you feel
scared off by the mixed reception
the shows lore has gotten, youll
still enjoy the anthological nature
of the early seasons, the so-called
monster-of-the-week format.

closet, dresser or under your bed.
De-cluttering isnt always an
easy task; weall havethosewhat

get ridof it! WhenI say get ridof
it, I mean if its in useable and
good condition, then donate it to

that takesdonations.
Onceyouhavefinishedde-clut-

Finally whenyoufinishde-clut-

The removal of makeup may
seemlike a really silly and trivial
topic but it is actually alegitimate
discussion that is overlooked
becauseitsjust assumedthat peo-
ple know how to properly take
makeupoff. It isalsoassumedthat
peopleshouldjust knowwhat type
of makeupremover they shouldbe
using. Sinceit isatopicthat isjust
brushedunder therug, tonsof peo-
pleareleftwitheyeirritations, dry,
flaky and overly sensitive skin
around the eye. The skin around
theeyeisconsiderablythinner then

knowwhatyouareapplyingtothat
area.
Makeup wipes and presoaked
cotton pads are some of the most
popular products to removemake-
up, as they are the quickest and
easiest. However, they arenot the
greatest tousearoundtheeyearea.
Many of theseproducts havealco-
hol in them, which is amajor irri-
tant and will dry out the skin as
well. Since these wipes usually
dont requireusing water, you are
alsoleavingaresidueof themake-
upandtheingredientsinthewipes
onyour face. Lastly, themotionof
rubbing a wipe across your face
can cause unwanted redness and
sensitivities.
While makeup wipes may be
convenient, it is best tobuy asuit-
able (alcohol free) makeup
remover with cotton pads. This is
not only economical, it is also
muchbetter for theskinastheyare
designed and tested to be used
aroundtheeyes.
Dual-phase makeup removers
are excellent to use when you are
wearing waterproof makeup or
heavy-duty mascara. Theoil com-
ponent breaks down the makeup
and makes it easier to lift off the
skin. Brands such as Lancme,
Shiseido and Clarins make excel-
lent removers.
To properly use this remover,
shakeit well sothetwophasesmix
together and then pour a small
amount onto a cotton pad. Place
the soaked cotton pad on the eye
and let it rest for a minute so the
makeup can start to break down.
Then gently glide the cotton out-
wards until all your shadow and
liner aregone. Do not just rubthe
cottonpadrigorously all over your
eye because chances are you will
get the remover in your eye and
will irritateyour skin.
For trickymascara, foldacotton
pad under your eye and let the
lashes rest ontop. Thenuseacot-
ton swab that has remover on it,
andgentlyrubtheeyelashesonthe
cotton pad. This is an effective
way of removing mascarawithout
looking like a raccoon. After
removingall of your makeup, it is
best to cleanse your face (with
water) to remove any excess
remover.
Even though removing makeup
mayseemtrivial, it issomethingto
always keep in mind. If you are
goingtowear makeup, youneedto
makesureyouproperly removeit.

The excitement of the console
launcheshasdieddownabit. Sure
people still love to parade around
their new PS4s and Xbox Ones,
but really, the enthusiasmis a bit
deadened by the fact that, well,
theres nothingto play. Right now
were at that awkward point we
were at around six or seven years
ago; that everymajor gamerelease
seesaport over twogenerationsof
gameconsoles. But evenwiththat,
theres something cool bound to
come out for your favourite con-
solecamp, right?
Eeeeeehhh well, fact of the
matter is, youreallycouldaffordto
waitabit, nomatter howmuchyou
loveyour favouritefacelesscorpo-
ration. Why?
The Xbox One
Besides somemildly interesting
Kinect support, there isnt much
goingonwithit besidesForza and
Titanfall, whichisavailableonthe
360andPCsanyway.
The PS4
Sure, Infamous Second Son and
Killzone Shadowfall look pretty
neat, but as big exclusives go,
theyre the only big exclusive
releasesseensofar. ThePSNindie
gamemarket shows alot of prom-
ise, but really, a lot of titles there
can be bought on Steam without
having to shell out big bucks for
thisblack trapezoid.
The Wii-U
Unless you need a fix for first-
party Nintendo games based on
their character roster, there isnt
muchgoingoninthewayof third-
party game support. Even the
bedeviledEA gameshaveshowna
complete lack of enthusiasm for
theunderpoweredwhitebox. Sure
they may beevil, but theyreabig
game publisher, and when one
dropsout, othersfollowsuit.
The horizons for the big three
arent exactlygrimsinceit after all
is pretty early in the race, but
futureprospects arent particularly
exciting either. Predictably, until
developers fully get their heads
wrapped around the hardware
theyre dealing with, its going to
bemulti-generationmulti-platform
gamesfromhereonout.
What do you do to end your
gaming fix? Well, simply look
back. ThePS3/360generationlast-
ed twice the span of the average
four-year console generation life,
and over those eight years there
have been some seriously awe-
some games youve probably
missed out on. And the best part?
Both the consoles and the games
aredirt-cheap.
Youll probably pick up both
Infamous games for the PS3 at
around $10. The 360 had, besides
Halo, somecool andunusual fran-
chises of its own (theCondemned
games come to mind). By and
large, thesegames haveagedvery
well, probably owing to the
depressing fact that games now
ape each other a lot more than
wedlike.
Scouring various gaming sites
top lists and the r/patientgamers
sectionof Reddit is agoodstart to
find someawesomemultiplatform
and exclusive games of this now-
past console generation. As for
newer titles being stretched
between console generations, I
suppose its a matter of asking
yourself, is shelling out $500
extra for the same game with
shinier graphics really all that
worthit? Trust me, it really isnt.
At ageneral priceof $5to$10per
second-hand game, its a great
holdout while you wait for some-
thingonthePS4toREALLY blow

Its comingto theendof anoth-

thatmeans timetofindajob. J ust
kidding, its time to watch lots of
movies! Every week from May
until September, another $100mil-
lion dollar film is going to be
released. Thereisgoingtobealot

convince you to see the new Seth
Rogen film, the Tranformers
sequel or the latest offering from
Pixar. Do yourself afavour just
say no.

Ernest Goes To Camp (1987)
What says summer likesending
awayyour childrenfor monthsat a
time to be looked after by com-
pletestrangers, most of whomare
teenagers? Yes, campisastapleof
summer movies, and Ernest Goes
To Camp isthefinest of thegenre.
The late, great J im Varney plays
Ernest P. Worrell, a maintenance
manat KampKickakee. Ernest has
always dreamed of becoming a
camp counsellor. This dream is
realized, however, this is only
because no one else at the camp
wants to deal with the particular
group of juvenile delinquents
Ernest hasbeenassigned.
At first the young hooligans
makeErnestslifealivinghell, but
before long, everyones favourite
slack-jawedyokel winsthemover.
J ust as things are going well, an
evil mining company tries to take
away the camps land. So Ernest
and the juvies fend them off by
dropping turtles on them, and
shooting them with flaming bow
andarrows. Thatshowyoustickit

Harry and The Hendersons
(1987)
Nothingsayssummer likefami-
ly trips (asidefromsummer camp
of course). The Henderson family
is enjoyinganice, peaceful outing
when their car hits something.
That something turns out to be a
Sasquatch, or Big Foot. The
Hendersons assumethecreatureis
dead, andstrapittothehoodof the
car. It turns out that theSasquatch
isverymuchalive, andheendsup
destroyingtheir home, andturning
their livesupsidedown. Thereisa
lesson to belearned herekids if
you hit something with your car,
driveaway asfast asyoucan.
Eventually the Hendersons
cometothink of thecreature(who
they dub Harry) as a member of
thefamily. But theSting song If
You Love Someone Set Them
Free could very well be describ-
ing this film, as the Hendersons
must consider sending Harry back
intothewildfor hisowngood.
Summer School (1987)
Schoolsout for thesummer
not sofast, legendaryshock rocker
Alice Cooper. Unfortunately for
someindividuals, summer is not a
timefor makingcrafts at camp, or
mowingdownhairymythical crea-
tures with your station wagon.
Maybe they didnt apply them-
selves during the regular school
year, or maybethey just arent too
bright.
Whatever the reason is, some
students find themselves going
intoovertime, akasummer school.
Mark Harmon (NCIS) shines as
irresponsible gymteacher Freddy
Shoop, who is forced to teach
Englishtoawackygroupof under-
achievers. Worseyet, if they dont
pass their final exams, Shoop will
be fired. Thats not going to be
easy with a class full of students
who are among other things, a
stripper, pregnant, dyslexic, and
obsessedwiththeTexas Chainsaw
Massacre. There have been many
films made over the years about
teachers who struggleto reachout
to a group of difficult students.
Summer School isundoubtedlyone
of thosefilms.

decisions. MacDonald is pretty
forthrightabouthisstupidity. After
graduating high school, living a
life of monetary and dietary
excesses while in Yale,
MacDonaldendedupwithacrush-
ing amount of debt in theformof
student loans, credit cardbills, and
a rather humongous bar tab.
Althoughheseemstolivetheidyl-
licdreamof atruebachelor, spend-
inghundredsof dollarsonbarsand
various drugs begins to catch up
withhim.
Withthechoiceof either declar-
ing personal bankruptcy or opting
for an overhaul of his life,
MacDonald went with the latter.
Instead of taking it one step at a
time, MacDonald devises the
UrbanHermit Plan, alifestyleto
helphimshedtheexcess debt and
pounds, by accordingly living on
$8aweek and800caloriesaday.
And how does one live on just
$8dollarsaweek?
Simple: adiet of lentils, 50-cent
tuna cans, and boiled cabbage at
thebehestof your roommate. Also,
occasionally trying to get away
from the temptations of civiliza-
tion with poorly planned camping
trips, although a real-life Henry
David Thoreau he aint. Utterly
insane and incredibly unpleasant?
Even he thinks so. Yet, miracu-
lously, he survives malnutrition
andbeer-starvationandlivestotell
thehilarioustale.
Alongtheway to his journey of
self-saving, youll seehimstumble
between all kinds of temptations
and mishaps, from refusing free
cakefromhis fellow officework-
ers, to an ill-fated journalistic trip
to Bosniaas part of workingfor a
small-town newspaper. The pages
are littered with alcoholic ware-
houseworkers, drugdealers, com-
pletestoners, confusedbosses and
infuriatinglysuccessful fellowuni-
versitygraduates. Thebookiscon-
sistently funny and never drags
down on petty emotional pander-
ing. Thereis no deep, tragic back-
story to Sam MacDonald; he is
fully awareandtakes responsibili-
ty for the fact that outside of his
parents control, he makes for a
rather poor adult.
There are no real lessons to be
learned from The Urban Hermit,
andI supposethat really is part of
the fun. Rather than giving some
wishy-washy Aesopabout person-
al responsibility, the book really
onlyimploresthemessage, Dont
be an idiot. Hopefully, if you
arent currently arent that closein
desperation, The Urban Hermit
will serve as some entertaining
light reading about a man who
shouldveknownbetter.

[SPOILER ALERT] HBOs
Game of Thrones made a record-
setting return to our screen last
week, kicking off another 10
weeks of dragons, swordplay, and
boobs (mind you it took 12 min-
utes for themto make an appear-
anceinthepremiere, standardsare
clearly slipping).
As clocks struck 9 p.m. last
weekend, viewers were treated to
oneof themost powerful opening
scenes of the entire series, as
TywinLannister melteddownIce,
the ancestral sword of Ned Stark
(Sean Bean, remember him?), so
he could re-forge the rare metal
into two swords for his crippled
sonandhis petulant incest-bastard
nephew.
As the camera panned over the
shots of ancient metal work with
the sombre Rains of Castemere
playing in the background, I real-
ized that this could go forward
beingoneof thebest advantagesof
the television medium, the ability
to show things far beyond the
scopeof what isinfront of achar-
acter.
For those unfamiliar with the
books, each chapter is told from
thepoint of viewof oneof aselect
few characters, so much of what
has been portrayed onscreen over
the last three seasons is merely
hintedat, leavingthereader tocon-
nect thedotsastowhat reallyhap-
pened.
Thedestruction of Iceis oneof
these moments, with George R.R.
Martinprovidingreadersonlywith
the shocked reaction of Neds
daughter at the destruction of the
last piece of her house (as far as
sheknows). I remember as abook
reader being angry at Tywin for
meltingit down, but seeingit por-
trayed onscreen felt like I was
watching another beloved charac-
ter die.
There are a few moments such
as these that have been enhanced
by their portrayal on screen, and
there are some further that have
been created especially for the
show to great effect, allowing the
show runners to give their audi-
enceagreater insight intothechar-
actersthantheauthor wasoriginal-
ly able.
Oneparticular scenebackinsea-

example of this, it wasnt loud or
action packed, but aquiet conver-
sation between King Robert and
his wife Cersei, discussing the
process of their loveless marriage,
evensharingalaughat thethought
that it may have actually worked
out. Neither of these characters
have POV chapters in the first
book, blocking readers away from
interesting character facts that this
scene revealed, I cant imagine
being the only reader shocked to
hear that Cersei actually hadloved
her husbandat onepoint.
As Game of Thrones continues
to dominate ratings in every mar-
ket on earth, the exponential
growth of not only the shows
scale, but also its budget is set to
continue, opening the doors for
even more moments that serve to
set theshowapart fromthebooks.

The London Knights were fac-

depleted and how? Zach Bell
would play no further part in the
post season after breaking a leg.
His fellow overager Brady Austin
was listed as a day-to-day with
mono.
Not what you would want to
hear before the toughest playoff

They didnt appear baffled by

Zadorov doesnt appear to mind
having to play around 25-30 min-
utes a game. Its whats expected
of him given the circumstances.
But between the time of writing
and the time you read this, the
Knights and Storm could have
playedfour gamesinsix days.
The series could be done by
then.
Win or lose, thats what
[Zadorovs] goingtoplay, unlessit
goes to triple overtime, London
GM Mark Hunter toldtheLondon

Theyre (the Storm) a good team
over there. Weve got a series

Hesright. Itsaseriesalright.
Game three, the Guelph Storm

That didnt happen. Robby Fabbri

The Stormmeant business. Its
not easy to play at the Budweiser

Barrie Colts and 2013 Plymouth
Whalers know that feeling all too
well. Over 9,000 screaming hock-

unfriendly at times.
Onthepositivenotefor London,
Zadorov is having ascorching hot
run of form. Hes tallied nine
pointsinsevenplayoff games. But
Knights captain Chris Tierney is
having a season to remember. Its
17 points in seven games for the

I didnt know [Tierney] was
going to be as big a goal scorer
coming into this year, forward

At thispoint every point isvital.
Sure as Ive brought it up before,

rather barge in as league champi-

What was predictable was how
excitingthis series would pan out.

Game seven of the National
Basketball League of Canadas
semi-final series between the
London Lightning and Windsor
Express was supposed to be the
biggest gameof theyear for every-
one involved. The teams, the
leagueand thefans. Windsor won
the game 110-95 in front of over
2,500fansat theWFCU Centre, to
advancetotheNBLC Final vs. the
Island Storm. However, the game
was thelast thing on themind for
themany peoplethat followed the
NBLC after that night.
The London Free Press Morris
Dalla Costa has been the
Lightningsonlybeat reporter over
thepastthreeyears hehasalways
beentherecoveringtheteamhome
and away. Naturally he was in
Windsor for thebig game, only to
be removed fromthe building by
theExpress owner DartisWillis.
The reason? The Windsor
Express organization thought he
was writing detrimental things
about the teams and the league.
NBLC commissioner, Paul Riley,
was on hand for the game and
allowedtheejection.
Thankstosocial media, thestory
exploded. By the time the game
wasover, thestoryhadreachedthe
Toronto Sun, Toronto Star,
National Post, CBC, Wall Street
J ournal and sports culture site
Deadspin.
To add context, this league has
never been mentioned by any of
these publications on a national
scale.
The Express and Riley claimed
what Dalla Costa was doing was
not journalism. However, Dalla
Costanever claimed to bean out-
and-out journalist, hes a colum-
nist. Hetakescertainlibertieswith
hisarticlesthat makeit prettyclear
hesnotfollowingacertaincodeof
ethics.
Riley also made the case he
taught journalism at Humber
College, after a lengthy career in
thefield. Inmany columns written
about the situation, writers
attacked Riley saying if he had
such a journalistic background he
should know not to kick out a
reporter.
To be fair, its uncertain what
theoutcomeof thisremoval would
havebeenif it wassomeonelesser
known than Morris. Hes covered
everythingfromtheWorldCupto
theOlympics for theQMI Agency
(a subsidiary of the Sun monop-
oly). So its no surpriseanorgani-

Theleaguesownerswill meetat
the end of this month to discuss
whats next for the league. This
will be a crucial meeting, being
that London owner Vito Frijiahas
already calledfor Riley toresign.
With the Island Storm and
Windsor Express finishing up the
NBLC Finals soon, it couldbethe

more column remaining this year,
that means that theres only time
left for onething, rampant specula-
tionabouthowtheseasonwill end!
Thisyear hasbeenajoyfor fans
of thegame, withdramabeingcon-
stantly served up at both ends of
the table and the gap between the
title rivals even closer than it was
whenI devotedanentirecolumnto
it. Withsuchuncertaintyandunex-
pected results becoming common-
placethis year, all of thesepredic-
tionsaresubject tochange, or tobe
madeirrelevant after just acouple
morerounds, but basedon current
form, this paints a fairly accurate
picture of how the table will look
comeMay 11.
At thetopendof thetable, there
arethreeclubswhocanstill realis-
tically take home the title and the
end of the season, Liverpool,
ChelseaandManchester City, who
at thetimeof writing, arewithina
mere four points of each other.
While all three look certain to
qualify for next seasons
Champions League, particularly
significant for Liverpool whohave
been absent fromthe competition
for fiveyears, theanswer towhich
part of thecountrythetitleisgoing
to wind up in is far moredifficult
toanswer.
Startingwiththecurrent leaders,
Liverpool areonaninegamewin-
ning streak, and if they manageto
win the remaining matches this
season, they will be champions,
and with both their title rivals to
come to their home at Anfield,
many pundits are tipping themto
be champions for the first time
since the Premier League began.
Their homeclashwithManchester
City this Sunday has thelook of a
winner takeall titledecider, and
avictory herewill beahugestate-
ment of intent for theReds.
Speaking of Manchester City,
many expected the Dubai-owned
clubto runaway withthetitlethis
season, what with their countless
billions and the most expensively
assembled squad in the country,
but their recent draw against free
falling Arsenal has madethat task
a little more difficult. While they
still hold two games in hand over
their rivals, the visit to Liverpool
represents a potentially daunting
task, as does a trip to top four
hopeful Everton, and the remain-
ingmatchesareagainstclubsinthe
mid table mire, theyre safe, but
have nothing to play for, and the
lack of enthusiasm that seems to
impact these teams at this time of
year may work to their advantage.
The supremely talented (and
expensive) teamis certainly capa-
bleof rolling over thesemid table
clubs, and like Liverpool, if they
canmanageavictoryinall of their
remaining matches, they will be
thisyearschampions.
Chelseaareinabit of astrange
position this year, the return of
manager J ose Mourinho was sup-
posedtobringinstant successback
to the club, and for a while, they
were leading the league and their
fans were settling into their enti-
tled, arrogant ways, but in thelast
couple of months, cracks have
been beginning to show.
Inconsistency has been the down-
fall of theBluesinthistimeperiod,
as comprehensivevictories against
London rivals Tottenham and
Arsenal were both followed by
struggling sides Aston Villa and
Crystal Palace, a match lost to an
owngoal by theChelseacaptain.

HEALTH HABIT OF
THE WEEK

This weeks story has a very
short shelf life, allow me to
explainwhy.
Korean car firm Hyundai had
launched an updated, nicely
improved version of their popular
Sonata sedan for the 2014 model
year, just a few months ago.
However, shortly after launching
it, Hyundai decided that they will
scrap all their recent work, and
offer its customers an all-new
Sonatafor the2015model year.
Thecar youseehere, whichhas
beenonsalefor lessthanayear, is
to be consigned to the history
books. Will thislimitedproduction
runmakethis model eligiblefor a
collector car statusinthefuture?
EvenHyundaisPR repsaidthat
likely wont happen, sothereisno
point buying one of these to just
put awayinatimecapsule, andtry
to sell it for a profit in 30 years
time, becauseit probably wont be
worthmuch.
However, if youreinthemarket
for a mid-size sedan, should you
buyonenowtouseasadailycom-
muter?
Thevisual changesareminimal,
but look harder and youll find
them. There is a new front apron,
nicer lookingskirting, roundingup
to those gorgeous new LED tail
lamps.
The big story with the 2014
Sonataistheupgradeontechnolo-
gy. It finally gets the Driver
Selectable Steering Mode
(DSSM), which lets you choose
thesteeringweight of your choice
(Normal, Comfort, or Sport). For
models equipped with thenaviga-
tion system, a larger eight-inch
touchscreenletsyoucontrol many
functions. Put the car in reverse
and that screen turns into a back-
up camera, which now features
lines that movewithyour steering
angle, makingparkingthecar eas-
ier.
There is also a new blind-spot
monitoringsystem, whichnot only
alerts you if a car is sitting in the
unseenspot, but will alsoalert you
if a car is fast approaching you. I
found this to be very useful and
will hopefully keep you on the
roadsafely.
Powering you forward is still a
choice between three engines; the
base model gets a 2.4-litre, four-
cylinder motor that produces 190
hp (you apparently get two extra
horses with the SE model). Next
upistheHybridmodel, whichgets
an electric motor, powered by
lithium-ion batteries. When the
electricmotor iscombinedwithits
2.4-litre, four-cylinder gas engine,
thecombinedpower output is 199
hp.
Themodel I testedwasthe2.0T,
which as you can probably guess,
comes with a2.0-litre, four cylin-
der, turbo charged motor, which
produces a very healthy 274 hp
and269lb-ftof torque. Despitethe
turbo chargedmotor, Hyundai has
tuned this motor to run on regular
gas, and those numbers are based
on 87 octane. That means this
mighty turbo sedan will be eco-
nomical torun.
Howeconomical will dependon
your right foot. Inawintery week,
I averaged9.4-litres/100km, which
is not bad, but not great either. I
would like to point out that my
tester was wearing winter tires,
whichhaveahigher rollingresist-
ance to regular rubber, and also
because cold mornings are much
worsethanwarmones.
The only transmission offered
on this model is asix-speed auto-
maticwithsteeringwheel mounted
pedal shifters. This is a smooth
transmission, and when asked
upon, quite quick too. One of the
best gearboxes in its class if you
ask me.
Thankstoitsturbopower, thisis
a quick car (zero to 100 km/h in
under 7.0 seconds), but it doesnt
encourageyou to driveit quickly.
Try drivingit fast, anditll remind
you that underneath it still has an
econo-car chassis, andthesuspen-
sion is not tuned for high speed
motoring. Best thentosettledown
andenjoy itscomfortableride.
As a practical family car, the
Sonata fares well. It might not be
exciting to drive not even in its
Turbo guise, nor will it massage
your backwhileyoucover ground,
but it doeswhat manyof uswant it
todomost of thetime.
Pricingfor the2014Sonatastart
at $23,999. The2.0T version lists
at $31,799. For what you get, the
pricingisnot badat all.
However, if you dont like this
current model, just wait two
months and the all-new 2015
model will beuponus.

Poulin said balancing athletics
