Basement Fracture Analysis and Modeling

Introduction:
Roughly there are five play concepts have been located in the Jura mountains, the Molasse basin and the North Alpine border zone, each with interesting aspects in view of the low exploration maturity of Switzerland: 1- Clastic play (Permian and Carboniferous gas and oil) 2- Coalbed methan play, in Carboniferous coals of the located Paleozoic troughs. 3- Clastic reservoirs in Subalpin triangle zone (gas) 4- Mesozoic carbonates (gas and oil) 5- Fractured and weathered basement rocks play (gas and oil): (Our target) Some potential may be envisaged for fractured and weathered basement rocks in the vicinity of deep Permo-Carboniferous grabens, where increased stress and brittle strain may have improved reservoir quality. Overthrusting during the Saalian transpressive or the younger Alpine phases may have even Juxtaposed basement rocks over sources, such as Paleozoic coals.

Proposal workflow:
Fractured-basement rocks comprise some of the largest and most productive reservoirs on earth. However, success can be elusive in these complex reservoirs because of the lack of understanding of the fracture network. The following fractured basement workflow (Fig.1) can improve both the static and dynamic fracture reservoir modeling, including information to highlight the fracture zone. define new well targets. select optimal tools for fracture characterization. generate a realistic model to determine OOIP and reserves. This workflow will be oriented based on the available data. The workflow also introduces an integrated approach to end-to-end quantitative analysis and modeling of flow-contributing zones. Advanced tools and technology form only a part of this innovative workflow. Schlumberger has the worldwide experience and expertise to deliver results in fractured basements. The workflow combines imagining well logs: FMI formation micro-imager and Sonic acoustic scanning logs. Triple-combo logs Also advanced seismic inversion will be included as an entrance to Geo-mechanics to deduce the elastic modulus and explore the locations of high brittleness (high possibility to fracture) using validated logs (including the deducing of shear wave velocity if it wasnt available) and seismic data. Seismic inversion will help also in facies mapping and it will be done both deterministic (High lateral resolution, low vertical resolution) and stochastic (High vertical resolution, low lateral resolution). The deterministic output will be used as an input for the stochastic approach to emphasize the accuracy and the resolution of the output.
