What do you want your classmates to learn?

What are the benefits of parental engagement and what can a teacher do to help? Kaitlyn, Olivia, and Rebecca Date March 5, 2014 Students will: Understand the importance of involving parents in their childs education and have strategies to help increase family participation. After each discussion group, the class will come back together and share ideas. We will consolidate learning at closure when we ask the main point of the activities. We will need scenario cards, large sheets of paper, tape, markers, and drawing sticks with students names on them.

Introduce our subject with video clip (1 min) - Our question will be presented (1 min) - This will lead into our small activity (1 min) - We will break into two groups with drawing sticks - Each group will receive a giant paper with a marker (2 min) - They are required to think of an answer to our main question. There will be two different groups so group 1 will receive the first part of the question: What are the benefits of parental engagement? Group 2 will receive the second part of the question: What can a teacher do to involve parents. (5 min) - After students are done/ time is out we will put the giant sheets of paper up on the wall and discuss what the two groups came up with. (1 min) - This will lead into the Prezi (4 min) - We will explain our subject in more depth (1 min) - This will lead into our second activity. - Our second activity is the scenarios. We will break into 3 groups of 4 using the drawing sticks. (1 min) - Each group will be given a scenario and have a couple minutes to discuss the topic. There are two options on the cards. Option 1 is the main priority and if they have time they can do option 2 as well. (4 min) - After students are done/time is out we will gather into a circle and discuss all the scenarios. (8 min) - Ask: What is the main point that you should take away from this lesson? After, we will distribute the handout. (2 min)
