Teacher: Tiffany Schandorf

Class Level: 11-12 Grade Human Biology

Date: 4/7-4/11

Frameworks/Benchmarks: HS-LS1Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting 2. systems that provide specific functions within multicellular organisms. Topics: Circulatory System, Blood Related Student Goals: Become familiar with scientific and medical terminology, practice lab safety and dissection skills, perform tasks in a team

Learning Objectives: Students will be able to: Describe the major components of the human circulatory system, Identify the main structures and trace the flow of blood through the cow heart, Identify the components of blood, Describe the purpose and function of the Lymphatic System

Materials/Resources: Biology textbook, handouts (guided note-taking, vocab assignment, internal/external anatomy of heart assignment, cow heart lab paper), cow heart, dissection tools, pen or pencil, anatomical model of the heart Introduction: This week we will begin our study of the circulatory system. We know that the nervous system is the control center of our bodies, but our circulatory system is also extremely important because it moves oxygen and nutrients to all our bodys tissues as well as carries the wastes away. We will first learn the basics of the circulatory system along with the anatomy and physiology by completing some class activities. On Wednesday we will perform our cow heart dissection and will be working in the lab with actual cow hearts. We will finish up the week on Friday with the study of the components of blood, and why your blood is so important. Activities: Monday: Circulatory System Guided Note-Taking (30 minutes) Review guided note-taking & go over PowerPoint Notes (25 minutes) Strategy 16-2: Productive Discussion (Harmin & Toth, 2006, pg. 206) re: heart diseases (5 minutes) Assign internal/external anatomy of the heart assignment (30 minutes) Wednesday: Strategy 8-1: Setting Procedures and Expectations (Harmin & Toth, 2006, pg. 107) (20 minutes)re: cow heart lab procedures Cow Heart Dissection and completion of the assignment (60 minutes) Clean-up lab stations (10 minutes) Friday: Strategy 4-6 Confidence Builders (Harmin & Toth, 2006, pg.65) to let students know it is OK if they dont know exactly what to write down on the Blood Graphic Organizer (30 minutes) PowerPoint Notes and animated blood-clotting video (30 minutes) Circulatory System vocabulary assignment (30 minutes)

Evidence of Learning (Assessment): Informal assessments such as teacher observation for the guided note-taking and completion of the blood graphic organizer as well as the internal/external anatomy of the heart as well as the circulatory system vocabulary sheet will be reviewed by the teacher. The formal assessment will be completion of the cow heart dissection laboratory report handout.

Wrap-up/Reflection: This week we have learned a great deal about the human circulatory system and its importance. We began by learning the anatomy and physiology of the heart and then we actually got to see what our hearts look like, but on a much larger scale with the cow heart dissection. We finished up today with learning about the blood that is pumped through your body by the circulatory system and the heart and the blood vessels. Next week we will discuss the Lymphatic system and you will learn how it is related to the Circulatory system and why it is so important for our health and immunity. We will also discuss the Respiratory System and you will learn more about those lungs that we learned are right next door to the heart.

Comments: Successful completion of these activities will prepare students for learning the Lymphatic and Respiratory systems.
