Famous Missourian Project

In this unit you will:


o o o o o o Learn about famous people in Missouris History Practice research skills Write an informative speech and memorize the script Use graphic organizers to record research and plan your speech Prepare artifacts or visual aids to compliment your speech Role Play by becoming a Famous Missourian for a day at our Living Museum

Steps
1. You will choose your famous Missourians from the list. Once youve picked a person to portray, you will begin your research. Most of the work will be completed in class, but you will be responsible for working on your speech, visual aids, and costume at home as well. 2. A research guide will be provided to help you in your research and prepare you for your presentation. 3. You will need to write a speech that you will use as a script. RememberYou are that person. 4. You will turn in a rough draft and a corrected final draft of your speech before the living museum. 5. You will need to memorize your script and have class members (and family) listen as you practice! Be sure to allow plenty of time to memorize your speech. 6. You will create a visual aid (a poster with important facts, time line, picture display) or find 3 props that relate to your Famous Missourian and come up with a costume for your person. Be sure to let the teacher know if you need help in getting props or a costume! 7. The Famous Missourian Living Museum will be set up in the elementary library. You will be responsible for being ready for visitors at all times. The museum will be open at designated times and dates during the day that will be announced later.

April 7- Research and Information Page is due


Students will have their research and information page completed. Students will be researching particular aspects of their Famous Missourians life. They will need to research what their famous Missourians childhood, their family life, education, major co ntributions, recognition and awards they received, where are they now, and an antidote or a quote about or spoken by their famous Missourian. Students will need at least three to five pieces of information for each research category. Students are expected to have at least five research sources. Multiple types of non-fiction resources are encouraged such as websites, encyclopedias, autobiographies, and biographies. Students are also expected to informally cite each research resource. Most of the research will be conducted at school, but we encourage your student to research their famous Missourian at home. Attached to this form is an information page for your student to use when conducting research at home it is identical to the copy they use at school. Please send this form back to school.

May 7- Rough Draft of Speech is Due


Students will use their information page to write a narrative speech about their famous Missourian. They will be writing their speech as if they were the Missourian. Students will be expected to use proper paragraph format while writing their speech rough draft. Their speech should be at least five paragraphs that will include relevant and important events in their Missourians life. The research guide will help the student focus the draft of their speech. Students are expected to write their speech in their own words using the information they collected during research. Students are encouraged to work on their speech drafts at home and return their work for revising and editing if possible. Students will be editing and revising their papers at school as well. Their speech should be two to five minutes in length.

May 14- Final Draft of Speech is Due


The students will submit the final draft of their speech. They will have opportunities to practice their speech with other students in the classroom.

May 19-Costume Check! Make sure your visual aids are prepared and your speech is memorized!
The students will bring in costumes to be checked on Monday before they present at the Living Museum. Make sure to let a teacher know if you need help finding a costume or preparing a visual aid.

May 20-23

Present speeches at the Living Museum

The students are expected to dress up as their Famous Missourian. Students will also bring in an artifact or visual aid that represents their Missourian to display during the Living Museum. Students need to be able to articulate how the artifact correlates with their presentation. Speeches must be memorized and rehearsed multiple times before the day of the living museum. Students will be expected to stand still and stay in character during the living museum tour.
