Gottlich Period 2 February 20th, 2013 Language Arts Research Government Censorship New York Times 1. Internet censorship in China is among the most stringent in the world. The government blocks Web sites that discuss the Dalai Lama, the 1989 crackdown on Tiananmen Square protesters, Falun Gong, the banned spiritual movement, and other Internet sites. determined than ever to police cell phone calls, electronic messages, e-mail and access to the Internet in order to smother any hint of anti government sentiment. Electronic communications is restricted and cut down to a very few websites. intercept incoming data and compare it against an everchanging list of banned keywords or Web sites, screening out even more information. Since late 2010, the censors have prevented Google searches of the English word freedom.the government blocked more foreign Web sites and sharply stepped up the blocking of virtual private networks, or VPNs. A VPN is a tool for encrypted computer communication that is widely used by businesses and individuals in China to protect against prying by the government and stateowned enterprises, and to circumvent Chinas blocking of a long and lengthening list of overseas Web sites that cover subjects the government considers politically sensitive. China assigned Internet companies greater responsibility for deleting forbidden postings and reporting them to the authorities. Web sites in China are required to employ people who monitor and delete objectionable content operating ever more efficiently since mid-2008, and restrictions once viewed as temporary like bans on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter are now considered permanent. Soon the government effort had shut down more than 1,900 Web sites and 250 blogs also online discussion forums, instant-message groups and even cell phone text messages in which political and other sensitive issues were broached.Green Dam-Youth Escort' on all new Chinese-made computers. The software would effectively monitor a users every move. In addition to its massive

firewall and intrusive software, the government employs thousands of paid commentators who pose as ordinary Web users to counter criticism of the government.

The Battle With Google

2. In January 2010, the governments policy put it squarely at odds with one of the worlds most high-profile companies, as Google announced that it would cease operations in China unless its search engine results were no longer filtered.China responded that companies doing business in the country must follow the law.Google closed its Internet search service in March 2010 and began directing users in China to its uncensored search engine in Hong Kong. While the decision was an attempt by Google to skirt censorship requirements without running afoul of Chinese laws, it appeared to anger officials in China. China Toughens Its Restrictions on Use of the Internet The authorities periodically detain and even jail Internet users for politically sensitive comments. Censorship is when the government, be it state, federal, or local, attempts to restrict what type of music can be purchased, played, or distributed in your community. Music censorship can take many forms such as parental advisory labels, banned concerts, banned cover art, rating systems, legislative bills/laws, and banned clothing. Organizations that are involved in music censorship are radio stations, MTV, companies such as Walmart, and organizations such as the Parents' Music Resource Center (PMRC) are responsible for censoring and labeling albums. There are currently no laws regarding the censorship of music. Songs with strong language, racist views, or harmful references will have this label on them. All the label means is that anyone can buy the song, but they should be aware of what the song contains. The first amendment is in place to keep the government from controlling the media. Amendment law does not apply to community and religious groups. Because record companies are not federally owned, their censorship is legal and constitutional. The censorship of music only violates our constitutional rights when the government, its laws, or its agencies conduct the restraint themselves. Therefore, when we speak of music censorship, we are usually referring to community or corporate attempts to regulate the society according to what they

deem appropriate based on their standards and beliefs.

Articles Freedom of the press has always meant freedom from government control and censorship, but now the communications industry itself is the major sensor, with control of access to the media resting in a very few hands. The new effort throughout the country to open up the media by applying citizen group pressure, by bringing court action, and by prodding federal agencies is chronicled. A critical analysis of how the media presently function is provided, along with a guide to the means by which public access to the media can be obtained. (Author/RH)

This study explores an under-studied layer of Chinese Internet censorship: how Chinese Internet companies censor user-generated content, usually by deleting it or preventing its publication. Systematic testing of Chinese blog service providers reveals that domestic censorship is very decentralized with wide variation from company to company. Test results also showed that a great deal of politically sensitive material survives in the Chinese blogosphere, and that chances for its survival can likely be improved with knowledge and strategy. The study concludes that choices and actions by private individuals and companies can have a significant impact on the overall balance of freedom and control in the Chinese blogosphere.
