Logos
Description: Date:
2/23/14 Three logo variations for the same company.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03 Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image. Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:

I first drew a bunch of sketches of my ideas. I then traced images of a compass and the earth with the pencil tool. On the top logo I selected the bottom anchors and stretched out the p in geographic. Then I made little rectangles to go under the lettering. I moved the anchors to create the triangular shape connected to the rectangle. On the middle logo I typed out Geographic Solutions and made the G and S bigger than the other letters. Then I stretched out the ends of the S to make it look like a river. To make the mountains I took a rectangle for the base and added anchor points and moved the points as I liked it. After I made three pointed stars (triangles) for the peaks of the mountains I added points on them to change their shapes. After that I made copies of the triangles and moved them slightly under the triangles to make a little edge around the peaks of the mountains.

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign. t

Process:

To make the design I used adobe illustrator. In illustrator I typed SLUG then edited the L to make it look like a slug. I used the pen tool for this. I used the complementary colors, orange and blue. To make the fire I made a star and used the white arrow to adjust it to the shape that I wanted. I then added two rectangles and used the eye dropper to match the colors in the slug logo. I then put pertinent information in the top right.

editing skills. Incorporate color into a poster layout with the original photo.

I placed the 3 boards near a window to get good lighting and took a few pictures to get what I wanted. I then used Photoshop to edit the picture just a little bit to make it look more natural. Without the edit the boards look much less dark, and the green doesnt stand out as much. I specifically used the sharpen tool, the selective color and the levels edit. Once the photo was the way I wanted it I added the shapes and text to make the design. I had never used Photoshop before so it was a good learning experience. I placed text, made shapes, changed the typography, changed the colors, inserted the slug on the bottom and changed the color of the slug. While making the design I decided that using the green from the image would make the design look good. I also incorporated the black and white in the image as well.

Adobe InDesign

Program(s)/Tools: Objectives: Process:

Make a professional and visually pleasing poster layout using correct design principles.

I exported images from my GIS program and placed them into photoshop to remove the white border that came with them. I then placed them in Indesign. For the layout I decided that I would put the map of most importance in the top left beneath the title. I then decided to put the text in four columns beneath the main map and put the four maps of lesser importance along the right edge. I also changed the fonts to two contrasting font types.

Suitability Analysis for a Sand and Gravel Mine for W.M. Dickson Company

Geologic Map

King County Zoning

History: Explanation:
W.M. Dickson Company is a general contractor who focuses on demolition. W.M. Dickson Co. was founded in 1937. In addition to demolition, W.M. Dickson Co. has been involved in the sand and gravel mining business. They currently have a very active mine on Waller rd. which is roughly 5 miles from downtown Tacoma Washington. In about a decade their pits resources will be depleted and the pit will be reclaimed with inert waste. To stay competitive W.M. Dickson Company may nd it very important to nd a new location to mine.

best location I have taken into account four main factors. Mr. Richard Dickson, the current president of the company, says that Geology and Zoning are the two biggest factors. The Geology is very important because if your aggregate is poor the land you purchase will not be worth it. As this was taken into consideration I decided to only include quaternary geologic units in the study. Zoning is just as important because in order to mine you need to meet county and state regulations, including having the correct permits. Without proper zoning and permits a mine wont last long under government regulation. For the zoning I included six zones: Mineral, Forest, Industrial, RA-10, RA-5 and RA-2.5. These were ranked from best to worst. The last two things that I took into factor was distance to Seattle and distance from Dickson Companys current mine on Waller rd. The distance to Seattle is an important factor. By taking this into consideration W.M. Dickson can nd the location that makes taking aggregate into Seattle and surrounding cities. In addition to the distance to Seattle I took into account the distance from Waller rd. By taking this into account W.M Dickson Company will be able to enter the sand and gravel market in the Seattle area.

doing the analysis I came to the conclusion that there are potentially good locations for W.M. Dickson Company to do sand and gravel mining in King County. I went into the analysis thinking that there might not be too many good locations. My thinking was that because of high population density good zoning would be hard to come by. I also thought that the geology would not be too good as you got closer to the Cascade Mountains. It is true that the geology worsens, but I believe that there are plenty of opportunities for sand and gravel mining in King County. This study is not conclusive. There are other factors that can be taken into consideration. One thing is the specic quality of the sand and gravel in specic locations. Future studies could include gathering data of the quality of the aggregate around King County. Another would be to retrieve data of large plots of land for sale in King County. In addition to this, a study of the zoning in relation to geology and distances within incorporated king county would be very helpful. In conclusion, there are suitable locations between the

Montage
Description: Date:
2/12/14 An insperational montage made by the blending of two or more images, and the use of typography.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03 Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. Use filters. Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

First I retrieved the pictures from photographers Matt McDonald and Bryce Cassleman. Second I came up with a basic design layout. I put the images into photoshop and edited them with the levels, vibrance and color selection tools. After editing the pictures I moved them around and used the mask and brush tool to blend the images together as I wanted them to be. I then added the text following the rules of typography. After receiving critique I used the stamp tool to edit a person out of an image and add a blur effect to the top right image. On the top right image I selected everything but the skimboarder to blur out the background to make him be in focus.

Web Page
Description: Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 03 Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Notepad++ Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS. Identify hex colors for web design. Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process:

For the webpage I used Notepad++ to edit the html and CSS. In the CSS I had to change the float and padding a lot until everything looked right. While editing the html and CSS I used a web browser to inspect the code. Also, while working with the CSS I took color samples with photoshop to find out what the hexadecimal numbers are for the colors on the logo so that I could match the logo with the design. For the typography I chose 3 san-serif font options and put them in the CSS for the title font. For the body font I chose 3 serif font options and put them in the CSS.

Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. Process:

I used adobe indesign for the layout. For the layout I aligned the paragraphs and pictures. On each page I used the pictures to guide the viewers eyes around the brochure. I used photoshop to edit the pictures. I used the quick selection tool and made a mask on four of the pictures. I used Adobe illustrator to make the logo. On the logo I used an image of wood to incorporate in the logo to make the logo look more like a skimboard rail.
