WEB PAGE
Description: Date:
March 15, 2014 A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo.

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 04 Cory Kerr

Programs/Tools: Objectives:

TextWrangler & Photoshop

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. Write content to describe the process of creating a logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic undestanding of CSS. Identify hex colors for web design.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

I created this web page using only TextWrangler. I had never seen or written any HTML/CSS. It was also interesting to use the http://www.W3.org HTML validator. It was useful to have something check to see if I had any problems with my code. After I marked up all my content and inserted my image, I attached a pre-made CSS document to my HTML. I then used the colors from my logo as the colors for my web page. I found these colors by opening Photoshop and using the eyedropper tool. I also changed my fonts to Georgia and Verdana. I declared some backup fonts just in case the viewers browser didnt have these fonts. I also used padding around the logo and text so that they would not be too close to the edge of the web page. This was one of the most challenging parts of working with CSS.

BUSINESS CARD
Description: Date:

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 04 Cory Kerr

Programs/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a personal image. Design consistent layouts for a business card letterhead. Use the baic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

I created the logo using basic shapes in Adobe Illustrator. I also used the pathfinder tool to cut and combine the type and shapes. Once the logo was created, I opened a new two page InDesign document and placed my logo .AI file into this document. In InDesign I used the rectangle tool to create the front and back outline of my business card. I then copied/pasted the logo and contact information onto this page. I kept the logo and contact information about the same size as the information on the letterhead. I made sure that not information came any closer than 1/8 from the edges. I also brought the double lines into the business card to help unify the stationery pieces. Finally, I a enlarged the logo and put half of it on the back of the business card.

Once the logo was created, I opened a new two page InDesign document and placed my logo .AI file into this document. I made my first page a letterhead. I positioned the placed logo in the top right corner of my letterhead. I made sure to keep it at least .5 away from the edges. I then typed my contact information into a text box and positioned it on the right hand side of the letterhead. I made my name 11pt font to contrast with the 8pt contact information. I added in a couple of double lines to unify the information and to get some repetition. I also added a large black and white version of my logo as a watermark. I kept the opacity to about 5%.

LOGOS
Description: Date:
March 15, 2014 The logo variations for the same company.

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 04 Cory Kerr

Programs/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create a variety of logos to fir a company or personal image. Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

It was a exciting process to create a logo in Illustrator because of the easy manipulation of text and objects you can have. I used the pen tool to draw pencil and hand shapes incorporated in my designs. Most of the other elements are just typography and boxes. I made sure to choose fonts from contrasting categories to capitalize on the contrast. I also tried getting some more contrast by changing the sizes of the words.

BROCHURE
Description: Date:
March 15, 2014 A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 04 Cory Kerr

Programs/Tools:
Adobe InDesign Adobe Illustrator Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Set up and align a two sided, folded document. Learn how to wrap text around and image. Use photograph styles in InDesign.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

I set up the gateway fold in Adobe InDesign. I split my layout into six sections with the concept that the two outer sections would be the flaps of the brochure and the middle sections would be the body of the brochure. I used the shape of a dragon in both pages inside and outside to create flow, unity and repetition. I deliberately chose food images as examples that showed the fusion gastronomy of those cultures. To create contrast I picked the yellow and purple as the background, and I picked red and green for the shape of the dragon. I picked this colors because they are vivid Latin colors that catch attention and create a desire of eating. I created the logo in Illustrator using the pen tool and then I placed it into InDesign. Then I created an oval and I placed my logo there with a short slogan for the restaurant.

MONTAGE
Description: Date:
A n inspirational montage made by the blending of various images, and the use of typography.

March 15, 2014

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 04 Cory Kerr

Programs/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. Use filters. Apply appropiate typography.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

I cropped the background image to 8.511. I added a picture of a flag, then I selected it and moved it to the bottom image, then I added a mask. With black paint and a 100% opacity, soft-edged brush, I painted away the hard image edges. With a larger black brush at 40% opacity, I blended the image of the flag, so it looks like it is reflecting on the sea. I played with the contrast and color balance of the images. I added some type using mask of pictures on each of the letters, then I played with some layer styles on the images. I used the lasso tool to create a heart and added an image and I played with some layer styles as well. I added some text which follows the path of the flag using warped text.

IMAGING

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 04 Cory Kerr

Programs/Tools: Objectives:

Nikon 3000 Camera & Photoshop

Learn basic photographic skills. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Size and cop the image. Adjust image using contrast, hue and saturation levels. Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

I first made my plan by choosing a color scheme from the Visual FOCUS book for my layout, I chose a Complementary scheme. Then, I went and capture a quality photo with good light, sharp focus, and nice composition. I used a Nikon D3000 camera. Later on, I brought my picture into Photoshop and used these specific editing techniques: levels, sharpness, saturation, and color balance. Then I design an 8.511 layout that including my photo, text, and repeating design elements. I incorporate my color scheme title, color swatches, and color names into my design. I used the eye dropper tool and adjusted the color in the color picker to match a little more accurately. I like the contrast and visual rhythm I created through lines and rectangles of soft and dark values of green and red. I also watched a Photoshop tutorial to find out how to type on a path in Photoshop. I also created three circles in order to create balance and repetition. Now my composition has the flow I desired.

EVENT AD
Description: Date:
March 15, 2014 A color full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 04 Cory Kerr

Programs/Tools:

Microsoft Word Epson Scanner PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter)

Objectives:

Find, scan and import a high quality image. Create a full-bleed design Use text boxes for layout in Word. Insert and esit images in Word.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

I scanned the image of fishes, and then used a Word image effect to adjust my image size and effects. Then I added two boxes with the same color for repetition and organization and another box with a darker tone to create contrast with my image. I chose one font with contrasting weights for simplicity. I was surprised at how much I could do with the design features of Microsoft Word. Now I know that I could use it as a back-up plan whenever I do not have my Mac. Programs I used: Microsoft Word, Epson Scanner, PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter).
