The total cumulative occupant load assigned to a particular stair shall be that stairs prorated share of the total occupant load, asstipulated in (d) and (e), calculated in proportion to the stair width.d.

For downward egress travel, stair width shall be based on the totalnumber of occupants from storeys above the level where the widthis measured.e.

For upward egress travel, stair width shall be based on the totalnumber of occupants from storeys below the level where the widthis measured.C.

Curved Stairs Curved stairs shall be permitted as a component in a means of egress,provided that the depth of tread is not less than two hundred eightymillimeters (280 mm) at a point three hundred five millimeters (305 mm)from the narrowest end of the tread and the smallest radius is not less thantwice the stair width.D.

Spiral Stairs 1.

Where specifically permitted for individual occupancies by Divisions 8to 17 of this Chapter, spiral stairs as a component of means of egressshall comply with the following:a.

Riser heights shall not exceed one hundred eighty millimeters (180mm).b.

The stairway shall have a tread depth of not less than two hundredeighty millimeters (280 mm) for a portion of stairway width sufficientto provide egress capacity for the occupant load served inaccordance with Section 10.2.5.2 para C of this IRR.c.

At the outer side of the stairway, an additional two hundred sixty-five millimeters (265 mm) of width shall be provided clear to theother handrail, and this width shall not be included as part of therequired egress capacity.d.

Handrails shall be provided on both sides of the spiral stairway.e.

The inner handrail shall be located within six hundred ten millimeters(610 mm), measured horizontally, of the point where a tread depthof not less than two hundred eighty millimeters (280 mm) isprovided.f.

The turn of the stairway shall be such that the outer handrail is atthe right side of descending users.

Where the occupant load served does not exceed three, spiral stairsshall be permitted, provided that the following criteria are met:a.

The clear width of the stairs shall be not less than six hundred sixtymillimeters (660 mm).b.

The height of risers shall not exceed two hundred forty millimeters(240 mm).c.

The headroom shall be not less than one hundred ninety-eightcentimeters (198 cm).d.

Treads shall have a depth of not less than one hundred ninetymillimeters (190 mm) at a point three hundred five millimeters (305mm) from the narrower edge.e.

All treads shall be identical.f.

Handrails shall be provided on both sides of the stairway.3.

Where the occupant load served does not exceed five, existing spiralstairs shall be permitted, provided that the requirements of para D 2(a)through (e) above are met.E.

Winders Where allowed in Division 8 through Division 17 of this Chapter, windersshall be permitted in stairs, provided that the same shall have a treaddepth of not less than one hundred fifty millimeters (150 mm) and a treaddepth of not less than two hundred eighty millimeters (280 mm) at a pointthree hundred five millimeters (305 mm) from the narrowest edge.F.

Enclosure 1.

All interior stairways shall be enclosed in accordance with theprovisions of Section 10.2.5.2 and Section 10.2.6.2 of this IRR, exceptinsofar as open stairways are permitted by paragraph "A" (2) ofSection 10.2.6.2 of this IRR.2.

There shall be no enclosed, usable space within an exit enclosure,including under stairs, nor shall any open space within the enclosurebe used for any purpose that has the potential to interfere with egress.G.

Stair Details 1.

All stairs serving as required means of egress shall be of permanentfixed construction.Each new stair and platform, landing, balcony and stair hallway floor

67 used in building of four (4) storeys or more and in all new buildings,required by this rule to be of fireresistive construction, shall be non-combustible material throughout except that handrails are exemptedfrom this requirement. Treads of stairs and landing floors shall be solid.2.

Each stair, platform, landing, balcony, and stair hallways floor shall bedesigned to carry a load of four hundred eighty-eight (488) kilos per square meter or a concentrated load of one hundred thirty six (136)kilos, so located as to produce maximum stress conditions.3.

There shall be no variation exceeding five millimeters (5mm), in thewidth of treads or in height of risers in any flight, except as permittedby paragraph H of this Section for monumental stairs.4.

Every tread less than twenty five centimeters (25 cm) shall have a nos-ing or an effective projection of approximately twenty five millimeters(25mm) over the level immediately below.5.

Where material of stair treads and landings is such as to involvedanger of slipping, non-slip material shall be provided on treadsurface.6.

Stairways and intermediate landings shall continue with no decrease inwidth along the direction of exit travel.
