PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Computer Aided Drafting Associate in Applied Science Program is
designed to meet entry-level requirements in Computer Aided Drafting occupations and provide students
with a broad range of employment opportunities in architectural, civil and mechanical drafting. In
addition, students may elect a specific area of concentration to meet their personal needs or occupational
requirements.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: Drafters translate the ideas and rough sketches of engineers and architects
into detailed drawings. Experienced workers may advance to plan checkers, detailers or design drafters.
A typical work week of 40 hours, but overtime may be required to meet deadlines. Drafters work for
engineering and architectural consulting firms, manufacturing firms, designers, and a variety of
government agencies.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES: South Puget Sound Community College believes that all students need to
develop a broad range of abilities that will not only make them more effective in their professional pursuits
but will enhance their capacity to relate well to others in their daily lives. Therefore students who complete
the program will be able to:
• Demonstrate the following skills standards specific to Computer Aided Drafting:
 Produce design documentation to industry standards using Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD
software)
 Develop complete architectural plans with consideration for aesthetics, cost, methods
of construction, building codes and common industrial practices.
 Develop profiles and cross sections, land sub divisions, site and grading plans and
basic earthwork calculations with correct interpretation of survey data.
 Use surveying instrumentation.
 Apply precision tolerancing, geometric dimensioning & tolerancing, materials and
process design criteria to their designs.
 Model mechanical design concepts in 3D using the latest solid modeling software.
 Develop realistic static and animated visualizations of designs.
 Work in design teams.
• Communicate effectively.
• Think logically and critically.
• Evaluate and process quantitative and symbolic data.
• Understand themselves in relation to others in a multicultural world.
• Understand ethical responsibilities and consequences.

AAS DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: Based on placement testing, basic skills and/or pre-college English,
Reading, or Math may be required (ENGL 097, READ 097 & MATH 090). Deficiencies must be completed
prior to graduation; however, students are strongly encouraged to enroll at the beginning of their
education. See the Curriculum Planning Worksheet.
