Introduction
THE USE OF COFRAPLUS 77 IN THE
CONSTRUCTION
cofraplus 77
Introduction
Further advantage
The COFRAPLUS 77 is manufactured with a pre-coating, and
consequently it is easy to provide the floor with the underface
already painted, thus forming a finished ceiling.
Dimensions
The characteristics of the floor are obtained at the start of official
tests and the measurement is easily obtained thanks to very simple
tables of use which will be found later in the brochure. For complete
dimensions, dont hesitate to contact our technical department.
Fields of use
The use of profiled sheets in the construction of concrete floors
constitutes an important and considerable innovation. It permits
substantial savings al the way through the construction programme
in more and more areas of work:
- industrial buildings
- Office blocks
- Commercial areas
- terraces
- hospitals
- residential buildings
- renovations
The product
The COFRAPLUS 77 is a rigid floor which permits considerable spans
without temporary support, and which, thanks to its system of
embossing, assures a good adhesion between steel and concrete.
This product is available in the following thicknesses: 0.75mm,
0.88mm, 1.00mm.
Raw material
All the floors of the ARVAL by ArcelorMittal range are manufactured
Basic steel
The basic steel is a non alloyed construction steel conforming with
S320 GD, whose minimum guaranteed limit of longitudinal elasticity
is 320N/mm2. It complies with the following quality standards:
NBN A 23-202
Fe E 320
ASTM A 446
Grade D
NF A 36-322
C320
EURONORM 147-79
Fe E 320
DIN 17162
St E 320
In respect of the thickness, it is to be noted that it is always
measured including the galvanised base, and that a tolerance of +/10% is acceptable, according to the standards.
Galvanised steel
The galvanised coating is obtained by the Sendzimir process, that
is to say, by continuous immersion of the steel sheet in a hot bath
of zinc. Unless otherwise specified, the type of coating is Z275,
corresponding to 1.25 OZ or 275gr/m2 minimum in total on two
faces, as the following standards: NBN A 23-202, EURONORM
147-79, ASTM 525, DIN 17162, NF A 36321, BS 2989. The
average thickness in theory is of the order of 20 microns for a Z275
which represents the standard commercial quality. The use of
ALUZINC is incompatible with the concrete.

1. METALLIC SUPPORT
The composite floor is adapted to all support structures.

1. Welded stud shear connectors
To weld the studs across the sheet on the support, the upper seam of
the beam has not got to be painted, and must be clean and dry. The
trapezoidal section must be in perfect contact with the beam.
We can foresee pre-punched holes in the sheet when studs are not
welded on site.
2 Riveted connectors
It consists of a metal piece, cold-formed into a L shape, fixed to the
beam by means of 2 rivets, put into place by direct fixing by means of a
rivet gun.
* The realisation of laying details on metal support is also possible in every other types of supports.

b) concrete support
On concrete beams, its possible to pour a first phase of concrete,
till the level of the steel sheet. Afterwards, thanks to the waiting
steel bars, one can pour the last phase of concrete and have a T
beam.
SPANS
According to the Eurocodes, the loads to be taken into
consideration during the concreting operation are the following :
the dead weight of the steel and of the fresh concrete
excess load due to the operation of concreting
(A) 10% of the dead weight of the concrete but 0,75kN/m
and 1,5 kN/m (on a surface of 3 m x 3 m)
(B) 0.75 kN/m on the rest of the surface
The effect of increasing the weight of the concrete on the
deflected surface of the sheet should be taken into consideration
in the calculation of the dead weight of liquid concrete. If the
deflection of the sheet is less than 20mm, this effect can be
ignored. If not, one would take an over thickness of concrete
equal to 0.70 on all the surface. Taking account of a maximum
deflection of L/150 during assembly, the calculations determining
when it is necessary to put supports have been calculated and are
presented in the following load tables (see ch. 4).
(* under proper weight and fresh concrete weight)
PROPS
When the chosen span is such that it is necessary to use
temporary supports, these can be carried out by traditional means
of dealing with reinforced concrete floors. The supports must be
placed in the middle of the span (or at 1/3rd of the span if there
are two supports), before the casting of the concrete and must
stay in place at least eight days after this. It is understood that
the sheet can not be interrupted at the point of the stiffening
supports, since they are only temporary.
cofraplus 77
Stages of shuttering and concreting
Attention
It is necessary to use floor protection or wooden boards sufficiently wide to avoid marking the sheet during
fixing. This comment applies particularly to floors where the back surface is pre-coated, since this part
would be visible when used as a visible ceiling.
FASTENERS
a) Sheet/support: the sheets must be fixed at the extremities to
avoid being displaced due to wind action or during concreting.
Two fixings in the width of the sheet are sufficient. On the
intermediate supports, in the case of continuous runs, fixings are
not required. The fixings must be suitable for the supports (nails,
self-tapping screws, or self-drilling screws).
b) Sheet/sheet: to avoid sheets separating during concreting,
it is recommended that they be fixed with rivets every 0,75m
when working in single span and every 1m when working in multi
span centres. This may be done by means of self drilling screws or
rivets.
cofraplus 77
Stages of shuttering and concreting
When the profiles are placed end to end, an end overlap of 50mm is sufficient to ensure water-tightness at the joint. This could also be
achieved by using self adhesive foam strips.
Openings should be foreseen, using formwork, at the initial casting of the concrete. After when the concrete has become hard, the profile can
be cut. The use of a reinforcement is not required if a single corrugation is cut. In the case of two or three corrugations being cut, one would
compensate the loss of steel section by placing reinforcing bars or rails around the opening. For more major openings, please contact our
technical department.
REINFORCEMENTS
2 to 3 cm
The principal characteristic of a composite floor is the steel sheet taking over the role of the lower reinforcement steel bars of the floor.
However, to limit the shrinkage of the concrete and to avoid cracking, it is necessary to use a wire mesh, positioned at 2 to 3 cm below the
finished floor surface. On the intermediate supports, in case of a continuous slab, the deflection moment is negative. The upper side of the
slab is in tension.
10
cofraplus 77
Stages of shuttering and concreting
The sections of the upper reinforcement steel bars are given in the
load tables in this brochure. The wire mesh needs to be layed in
overlap (continuous) on the supporting points. The sections of the
anti-shrinkage are given for the maximum load bearing capacity.
If the actual load should be less, the wire mesh section may be
possibly adapted accordingly.
CONCRETING
1. The concrete
The concrete used according to EN 206 and EN 206-1 starts with
NC 25/30 (normal concrete) until NC 35/45 and LC 30/33 (light
concrete) until 35/38. The nominal dimension of the aggregates
depends on the smallest dimension of the structural element on
to which the concrete is poured. It may not exceed the smallest of
the following values:
0.40 hc
bo/3 (=28mm in the case of the COFRAPLUS 77)
30 mm
In the case of light concrete made up of extended aggregates
of clay (Argex) : Rwk=30N/mm2. The density in this case is
1.8kN/m3.
2. Application
Before concreting, it is firmly advised to clean off all dirt with a
brush or a water jet. The concreting is done by traditional methods
that is to say pump, concrete tub/mixer etc.
It is necessary to avoid large lumps of concrete. It is further
advised to pour the concrete on the supports first. It is not
necessary to vibrate the concrete. The loss of liquidity is very
small. However, if this loss presents unsightly marks on the back
surface, it is advisable to clean these with a simple jet of water
during the work. In the case where the floor has to be covered
with a water-tight layer, it is necessary to take account of the fact
that the sheet, preventing evaporation, slows down the drying
action of the floor. The water-tight layer will therefore be placed
accordingly.

A reduction of proper weight can also be particularly appreciated in case of multi-storey buildings, enabling the optimization of the structure
and foundations. This lightness can also be precious in the case of renovations, when the bearing capacity of the walls or foundations is
limited.
A lighter weight of concrete also enables larger spans without props at the concreting stage. The use of composite floor Cofraplus 77 LS has
been developed with a structural concrete with light expanded aggregates of clay (Argex )
:

minimum 1600kg/m3
= 0.65W/m.K (1.3 W/m.K for normal concrete)

This type of concrete also allows a more efficient thermal insulation of the composite floor. This property has interesting repercussions on the
fire resistance.

Physical properties
Physical properties
1. Resistance to fire
It is generally accepted that composite floors have a fire resistance
of 30 minutes.
An increase of this fire resistance can be obtained by:
- installing a protective false ceiling
- placing a protective material on the lower face;
- Additional reinforcement incorporated in to the concrete.
After 30 minutes, those reinforcements must take over the part
of the steel sheet considered as inactive. (They are calculated
according to EN 1994-1-2).
2. THERMAL INSULATION
3.SOUND INSULATION
The finished floor presents a reduction in sound proportionate
to its mass. One could therefore say that this floor has similar
characteristics to a normal slab of the equivalent thickness.

Calculation notes
Calculation notes
The load tables presented in chapter 4 have been established by
means of a computerised programme which allows us to give you,
if needed, a note of supporting calculations.
The data given are divided into two categories:
On the one part, the appropriate data for each case, i.e.:
- total thickness of floor,
- thickness of the sheet,
- spans,
- number of supports,
- amount of extra weight which might be considered as
permanent (paving, tilling,);
And on the other part, fixed data, that are standard introduced
values, which can be modified if required:
- elasticity limit of steel: 320 N/mm
- module of elasticity: E=210000 N/mm
- factors m= 138.3 and k = 0.0446 (normal concrete)
factors m= 183,9 and k = -0,0944 (light concrete)

Renovations
Renovations
Besides the usual application of new constructions, this product is also very well adapted for renovations. The steel sheets are very easy to
place by hand and even at some places that are difficult to access. Thanks to the trapezoidal shape of the sheet, one can save on the proper
weight of the construction and thus limit the over charge of the foundations.

PACKING
The ARVAL by ArcelorMittal sheets are packed in the following
manner: They are generally used for direct transportation from
the factory to construction sites, in preference without any
intermediate transfer.
The cradles and collars are spaced out in a regular and adequate
fashion in accordance with the type of profile and the length. In all
cases they allow transportation and stacking of the load timber to
timber to avoid any damage to the sheets.

STORAGE
The galvanised and prepainted sheets must be stored under cover,
away from atmospheric influence (water, snow, sun, etc.). The
loads will be placed with a light longitudinal slope, allowing good
ventilation to avoid condensation. It is not advised to keep sheets
under tarpaulins for long periods. The best method is to store in a
dry and closed area at a constant temperature.
TRANSPORTATION
Our sales are stated to be ex. works, except unless otherwise
stated. This is a condition of sale and acceptance of order.
In exceptional cases, the deliveries are made as a concession to the
customer, and the goods travel at clients risk. All eventual claims
on deliveries must, to be accepted, be consigned under the letter
C.M.R. of the haulier, and signed by the recipient at the moment of
delivery.
The confirmation with the precise details of the claim must be
received in writing by recorded delivery within three working days.
In the case of hidden defects, the delay is seven days. Outside
these periods, the claim will not be accepted.
HANDLING
It is strongly recommended to slide slings under the cradles in
order to avoid gouging the edges of the sheets, which would cause
difficulties in fixing. The loads of sheets, especially the longer
lengths, would be handled preferably by overhead travelling crane
(in the factory), or by crane (on the site), using a suitable swingbar and equipped with hemp slings, or similar.
