Initial Project Creation

There are a number of things to consider when starting a new project. These include establishing tag formats, symbols, title blocks and a number of other configuration tasks. It is useful to follow this diagram as a guide for what activities need to be considered when setting up a new project.

AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Help

Creating and configuring a Project in P&ID is well documented in the help. You can get to this information by selecting Help from the AutoCAD Help menu, and selecting the desired topic under Users Guide.

Create new P&ID Project

To CREATE a new project, you select New Project from the Project Manager. Project list dropdown this will bring up a dialog for creating a project.

When creating a project, you always choose another project to use as a template. This other project can either be one of the 4 standard projects that ship with P&ID, or any project that youve previously created.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

If you wish to start this project from an existing project, select the radio button option Browse to another project to use as a template. When you browse, you are looking for a file called Project.XML found in that projects directory.

After creating a project, you will be returned to the Project Manager (assuming you left the Edit Project Properties after creating project box unchecked). From Project Manager you can start creating new P&ID drawings.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

It is often nice to create the P&ID drawings upfront. Then the users will simply need to select the drawing from Project Manager to begin drafting.

Project Tool Palettes

A popular request is to have tool palettes that are project based and shared by all users. While this is possible to do within the AutoCAD framework, it does require some setup effort on the part of a project administrator. There is nothing P&ID specific here; its all about configuring standard AutoCAD behaviors. The tool palettes we use have the same behaviors as standard AutoCAD tool palettes. So here is the scenario: We have 3 projects PROJECT1, PROJECT2, and PROJECT3. These projects are for different clients and have slightly different symbology. We want to be sure that all the users will be using the correct symbols for whatever project he is currently working in. The project administrator can set up tool palettes containing symbols for each specific project and post them to a centralized location on the network where all the designers can access them.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

Copy the ToolPalettes Folder to the Network

On the local drive, a toolpalettes folder contains data pertaining to each new palette. The project administrator places a copy of this folder on a network server so designers can access the new content. 1. On the local drive, navigate to the following location;
C:\DocumentsandSettings\<User>\\ApplicationData\Autodesk\AutoCADP&ID2010\R18.0\enu\Support 2. Copy the ToolPalettes folder from this location.

3. Navigate to the location on the network server where you want designers to access the tool palettes, for example: \\MyServer\MyProject\MyPalettes. Note: The folder on the server should have permissions set to read-only so files can be accessed from the drafting systems, but files can only be updated by the project administrator.
4. Paste the ToolPalettes folder into the folder youve chosen on your server.

You set up profiles for each project and educate you users to load the proper profile when changing projects. Or you can set up P&ID projects so that they KNOW what tool palette to use. To teach the project which tool palette to use, one uses a command called PIDLINKTP After executing the PIDLINKTP command, each project knows what project TP Group to load.

Add New Tool Palettes and Populate them with Tools

The project administrator initiates the creation of project specific tool palettes. Palettes are created and populated with symbols that designers will use to create drawings.

1. From within AutoCAD P&ID 2009, Create 3 new Tool Palette Groups into Groups (Project 1, Project 2, Project 3 for example as group names) First, you need to get into the Customize dialog box by either typing Customize on the command line or picking Customize Palettes from the right click menu. Right click in the right pane to create new groups.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

2. Create new tool palettes (tabs) (this is already done on instructors laptop): Right-click in the left pane Palettes: and select New Palette. Name the Palette AU1 Valves Repeat this until you have 9 new palettes TE1 Valves, TE1 Lines, TE1 Equipment, TE2 Valves, TE2 Lines, TE2 Equipment, TE3 Valves, TE3 Lines, TE3 Equipment.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

Add the palettes to their respective groups

3. Populate the tool palettes with tools This above procedure gives you blank tool palette tabs which you then populate with tools. You can do this by adding tools from project setup or by copying tools from other palettes. Alternatively, if you had a palette that has most or all of the tools that the standard palette has, you can use import/export to copy a palette (then rename the copy). You do have to make all the project palettes, which can be time consuming, but it only needs to be done once at the beginning of a project. 4. Finally, to teach the project which group to use. Verify that you have the project loaded that will be using the group Project 1 Verify that the tool palette has Project 1 active Type PIDLINKTP on the command line & select active as the option.

Once this is done, any time this project is opened from any users workstation, this active tool palette group will be loaded.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

THIS IS THE OTHER WAY USING PROFILES

In this approach, the USER needs to remember to pick the right profile for each project. (You could setup different desktop icons for each project, where each icon includes what profile to use.)

Copy the ToolPalettes Folder to the Network On the local drive, a toolpalettes folder contains data pertaining to each new palette. The project administrator places a copy of this folder on a network server so designers can access the new content.
Using the same steps as above, copy the tool palettes from the local drive to a server location accessible by all users.

Set the Tool Palette File Location The toolpalettes folder contains only data pertaining to the tool palettes. It does not retain the group settings or path to the tool palettes on the network. Setting the tool palette path and exporting a profile from the project administrators system ensures that designers use the new tool palettes and project groups

1. At the AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Command prompt, enter options 2. In the Options dialog box, on the Files tab, do the following; Expand the Tool Palettes File Location path. Select the existing file location and click Remove. Click Browse and set the file location to the ToolPalette folder that you copied to the server. (\\MyServer\MyProject\MyPalettes\ToolPalette)

3. Click Apply to set the new tool palette path. 4. On each user machine, repeat the above 3 steps to get the project TP

10

Switch the Project Palettes

Designers can open the tool palette they need to use for a particular project. Or, if the designer is assigned to another project, he can access the pertinent tool palette for the new project.

1. Launch AutoCAD P&ID 2010. 2. Open a project and then open a drawing associated with the project. 3. Right-click in the Tool Palette title bar. 4. Right-click and choose the palette you want to use for the currently loaded project.

Tip: When you open a project drawing, verify that the correct group is active by repeating this step.

Summary: Project Specific Tool Palettes

Project specific tool palettes allow a project administrator to give the design staff the pertinent tools necessary to complete their assigned projects. Once palettes are set up and organized the project administrator only needs to export a profile and let the design staff know from where they need to import the profile. The palette structure and tool palette path is maintained in the administrator profile.

Getting started in setting up projects

Creating new symbols, new annotations, new tag formats and other setup items are covered in detail in the help. Here we will highlight a few things to get you started in setting up a project.

Fields in the Title Block

As with standard AutoCAD, you can use the FIELD command to add intelligent attributes to your titleblock. In an extension from AutoCAD, you can also use fields defined in P&ID Project Setup as Project Properties or Drawing Properties. For example, say you wanted to have the titleblock display a Project Property of Client Number and a drawing property of UNIT.

1.

Add Client Number as a Project Property in Project Setup.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

12

2.

Add a Drawing Property custom Category of Drawing Data and create a Row with the property name Unit.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

13

3. 4.

Press OK to close Project Setup. From the File menu, open the DWT file you plan to use as the titleblock for this project.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

14

5. 6.

Type FIELD on the command line. This will invoke the Field dialog box. For the Client Number property, select CurrentPidProjectCustom, then select the property category and property name. Press Ok to locate the field on the titleblock. NOTE: After placement, you can change the font style of the placed fields by double clicking the field and making modifications in the presented MTEXT editor.

7.

For the Unit property, select CurrentDwgCustom, then select the property category and property name. Press Ok to locate the field on the titleblock.

Layers & Colors

All the symbols and styles in P&ID 2009 are stored in a drawing called ProjSymbolStyles.DWG. You will find one copy of this drawing in the project directory for each project. The layers in this drawing control the layers that you can choose when in project setup. More specifically, the layers in this drawing control the layers to which you can assign P&ID components.

So if you want assign components, slines or annotations to, say the DEMO layer, you do the following: 1. Open the project ProjSymbolsStyles.DWG with AutoCAD 2. Bring up the Layer Property Manager dialog from the layer toolbar or by typing Layer on the command line 3. Create a layer called DEMO using traditional AutoCAD techniques. This can be done via the new layer icon button.

You could also set the layer colors & linetypes here but more often it is set in the DWT file. The DWT any new P&ID drawing will use is the one specified in Project Setup Paths node. As long as the DWT has these same layers as in the ProjectSymbolStyles.DWG, then the system will get the DWT layer settings. Were going to go ahead and also add DEMO also to a DWT.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

17

1. 2. 3.

OPEN in AutoCAD the default DWT Open this DWT, add the DEMO layer, and set the color. Again, as shown above, this is done from the Layer Properties Manager. Save and Close the DWT file.

Hint: If you are starting your DWT from scratch, AutoCAD design center allows you to drag & drop layers from any DWG/DWT in the tree onto the current drawing. So you could easily drag layers from ProjSymbolStyle.DWG into your DWT. P&ID 2010 ships with 8 sample DWT files that can be used as a starting point when creating your projects DWT, remember it is always important to have a recovery plan when changing out of box files. If/when making your own DWT, it is highly recommended that you turn wipeout frames off . Otherwise, your instruments and other annotations will look stupid. You will see this DEMO layer (remember, we started this section by adding a layer?) in the next section when we add a symbol.
1

Adding Symbols
How to add your own block again the help is very helpful. But as an overview, the majority of a symbols default behavior is controlled by what is set for that symbols object definition in Project Setup. The Symbol part of an object (as opposed to the data or annotations or tagging) is defined in the symbols section of that items object definition, highlighted below.

____________
1

To turn wipeout frames off, open the DWT in Autocad. Type WIPEOUT at the command lines. Then Type F to invoke the frames control. Then type OFF to turn them off. Then save your changes.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

18

Add Symbol lets you add a new symbol to this class. Edit Symbol lets you edit properties about an existing symbol. Edit Block brings up the block editor for modifying the symbol block.

This procedure assumes you have a BLOCK in a DRAWING of your new symbol2. In particular, this assumes you have a new Air Cooled Exchanger. Selecting Add Symbol will bring up the Symbol Setting dialog. The on the BLOCK line will invoke dialogs for you to browse to the drawing block within the drawing that you want to use as a symbol.

_____________
Yes that is BLOCK in a DRAWING and NOT a whole drawing that you want to use as the symbol.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

19

The other options on this dialog are for further defining how the symbol behaves when placed. What the options mean should be evident, but if not, the help covers each option. Help for this dialog is accessible from the button on the bottom of this dialog.

Notice that the LAYER dropdown contains all the layers in the ProjectSymbolStyles.DWG, included any you may have added.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

20

Adding new data fields

You add new properties under Object Definitions in the Properties section. Any property that you add will be added to that node and to all classes below that node. For example, if I add a property VENDOR to the Equipment node, all equipment items (pumps, tanks, exchangers, etc) will also get this property.

After pressing the Add button, you will get a dialog allowing you to specify what type of property this new field will be.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

21

Strings will accept any text characters, including number. Numeric will only accept numbers Boolean types only accept True or False as values Symbol List is a way to control the displayed graphics through a selection on a list. The NORMALLY property on the Gate Valve is an example of how the selection can control the graphics.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

22

Selection List will allow you to make the property a dropdown list (sometime called a combo box or a picklist). If you select Selection List, you will be given a dialog where you can create a new selection list and add values to the list.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

23

The Acquisition type list you select the property from a connected item that will be used to populate this new field. For example, the spec of a valve is an acquisition from the spec of the pipe line segment.

When you select acquisition as a property type, you set up a rule stating that the property acquires its value from another property. The acquisition source can be another class, project, or drawing property.

Acquisition ensures consistency among component property values. If the source value changes, all components set to acquire that value change as well. Property acquisition is also useful for maintaining consistent tagging. When you change a source value, tag formats that are based on acquired properties update automatically throughout the project.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

24

Understand Property Acquisition Rules

You can select any drawing or project property without restriction as the source of an acquisition rule. When you select a class property as the source, however, make sure that the acquiring class and the source class are connected.

A valve may acquire a size value from a line, for example, because the two are connected in a relationship. A tank and a furnace, however, have no direct link and no one-to-one relationship between them. Therefore, you cannot set up an acquisition rule between them.

You can set up property acquisition rules when the following one-to-one component relationships exist: Line and inline asset Line and start asset Line and end asset Line and arrow Annotated and annotation Line and break Line and page connector Line and nozzle Pipe line group and pipe line Signal line group and signal line Connector and connector Asset and non-engineering (only between a control valve and its actuator)

To set up a new property acquisition rule

1. In the Project Setup dialog box, Project Settings, click the plus sign (+) next to P&ID Class
Definitions to expand it, and locate the component you want (HandValves, for example).

25

2. In the Properties group, click Add. 3. In the Add Property dialog box, do the following: Under Property Name, enter the property name (for example: PipelinesInsulationType). Under Display Name, enter the new property name you want displayed in the Data Manager or the Properties palette (for example: PipelinesInsulationType). Under Choose a Type, select Acquisition. Click OK. 4. In the Select Data Source dialog box, do the following: Under Categories on the Class Properties tab, click the plus sign (+) next to EngineeringItems to expand it, and locate the component you want (for example: Pipe Line Segments) Under Properties, select a property (for example: Insulation Type) and click OK.

5. Close the Project Setup dialog box.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

26

To override an acquisition property 1. In a drawing, right-click the component that has an acquiring rules that you want to override and select Properties. 2. Locate the property you want to change (it has an Acquire mode icon next to it) and click the field in the second column. 3. Click the Acquire mode icon and select Override mode from the list.

4. Type the value you want to substitute for the acquired value. 5. Close the Properties Palette. Note You can also override property values in the Data Manager.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

27

Once you have created a property, you can control some things about this property in the grid shown in the UI

Display Name is what name is shown to the user in the AutoCAD drawing UI on the properties palette or in Data Manager. Default Value is the value this property will get when a new item is created. Property Type echoes what was selected as the property type. Checking on Read Only will make the property un-editable in AutoCAD. Visible will indicate if this property is seen in the AutoCAD drawing UI or not

System Properties are properties that cannot be removed as they are used by the application. The software needs these properties to function as expected.

If the Property Name has an asterisks (*) by it, like Comment does above, it means that this property is defined at a higher node. A property can only be erased from the same node that it was defined.

Some properties, like ClassName are grey across the grid (except for Default Value). These are class level properties. All items of this class have the same value for these sorts of properties.

Configuring Tags
AutoCAD P&ID 2010 ships with predefined tag formats for Lines, Equipment, Instruments, Nozzles and Valves. However, the application lends itself to changes in any of these out-of-box formats. For example, we will set out hand valves to be tagged as Supplier-ValveCode-Number 1. Select Hand Valves from the Project Setup Tree. In the Tag Format section, pick New

2. In the Tag Format Setup dialog, name the format New Hand Valve Tag, and set the number of subparts to be 3. Then we will press the Select Class Properties icon

Annotations
P&ID has starter annotation templates to make it easier for you to get started in creating annotations. These annotation starter blocks are in the file AnnotationTemplates.DWG installed in the program file directory. They mostly have text that says unassigned. When you are setting up an annotation, you start with one of these, then fix the unassigned text to reference the field you really want. Or, as shown below, you can copy any existing annotation to use as your starter template. For this exercise, well make a new info tag for pumps. This infotag will be for pumps and will say: TAG NUMBER Description MANUFACTURER: Manufacturer CAPACITY: Flow @ tdh TDH VENDOR: Vendor

1. Make a new Annotation for pumps, navigate to the pump node in the object definition tree. In the annotation section, you first want to pick Pump Infotag. This is the existing annotation that will get copied as a template when we make the new one. Then pick NEW ANNOTATION.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

Adding lines with MultiLine styles

MultiLines styles are build out of several lines and fills. All you need to know is how to create the style in standard AutoCAD. Then create a Line class in Project Setup that uses this style. We will make a type that has a continuous line in the middle and dashed lines on the outside, similar to this:

1. Open up the projects ProjSymStyle.DWG 2. From the Format Menu, select Multiline Style

Copying within a project

There are three ways to copy components in AutoCAD P&ID 2009. One is the AutoCAD copy command. The second is Ctrl-C Ctrl-V windows copy-paste (Thats a copy clip & not an AutoCAD copy). The final involves making a block and inserting/exploding this block. The designed behavior for tags when you copy a component is as follows: 1. Copy all the data for that component 2. Each TAG will be post-pended with a ? Indicating it needs to be retagged. You are then expected to go through an retag the copied items. If you have a lot of items, sometimes tagging via the data manager can be a more efficient approach. Another way to quickly tag component is with the TAG tool from the toolbar. You quickly get the hang to when to right click and when to left-click (or press enter). One can use AUTOCAD COPY to copy with a drawing. One can do a similar thing between drawings. Open both a source and destination drawing in the same AutoCAD session. Then use Ctrl-C Ctrl-V to copy from one to the other. One gets a similar result as if he were copying within one drawing. One can also make a block with wblock, and explode it upon insert to accomplish the same thing. With some planning and organization, this is a way to create a basic assembly library.

Reseller AutoCAD P&ID 2010 Setup and Configuration Training Munich May, 2009

45

Copying Drawings
What if one wants to copy an ENTIRE DRAWING? Follow the above procedure and use copypaste to get a copy of contents of one in the other. This is the preferred way to copy a drawing. You do have other option which involves the Copy Drawing to Project option in Project Manager.

The thing about the ADD DRAWING function is while it will blank all duplicate TAGs that it finds it will not blank the subparts.
