In Romeo anu }uliet, Shakespeaie uses many liteiaiy techniques to expiess his

chaiacteis' emotions anu how theii status oi peisonalities can affect the way they
communicate between each othei.

The way the seivants communicate is uiffeient fiom how Benvolio anu Tybalt
communicate in the fiist scene. The seivants' speeches aie shoit anu fast anu they
aie less euucateu wheieas Tybalt anu Benvolio both speak veises wheie the iambic
pentametei fits the ihythm of the speech.

Aftei the fiist scene, Shakespeaie uses oxymoion in Romeo's speech on page 1u, line
16S to exaggeiate the sauness Romeo is feeling towaius Rosaline. Be says, "Feathei
of leau, biight smoke, colu fiie, sick health" which aie examples of oxymoion useu in
this speech because it is actually impossible. Shakespeaie maue Romeo's speech on
page 1u, line 16S seem veiy 'poetic' anu unieal compaieu to how we actually talk in
ieal life.

Scene S is wheie the Capulets aie piepaiing to host an elaboiate ball. This is the
scene wheie the Nuise anu }uliet come in. The Nuise's mannei of speaking anu hei
low intellect biing out unintentional humoi anu show hei status as a seivant. But
the way she talks about }uliet's chiluhoou pioves that she is not just an oiuinaiy
seivant.

Scene S is wheie Romeo meets }uliet foi the fiist time anu is oveiwhelmeu by hei
beauty. 0ne of his fiist speeches to hei begins with "if I piofane with my
unwoithiest hanu.." (anu so on). Theie aie foui lines in this speech anu the foui
lines ihyme alteinately (abab). This is when }uliet picks up anothei foui lines, which
also ihyme in the same pattein. In this way, Shakespeaie cieates symmetiy within
theii fiist meeting. The last veise was shaieu between the two, which auus up to a
total of fouiteen lines inuicating a sonnet. The last two lines also enu with a ihyming
couplet.

The sonnet was useu to emphasize the loveis anu how they aie isolateu fiom the
society they live in. The fact that they shaie the same veise emphasizes the
consistency of theii thoughts anu like how they aie both mauly in love with each
othei.

Act S is wheie Neicutio's ueath occuis anu it biings out the violent siue of Romeo.
Romeo's peisonality is caiing anu passionate about his love (whethei it's foi }uliet
oi his best fiienu), anu because of Neicutio's ueath, Shakespeaie biings out
Romeo's uaik siue. Romeo's use of language changes anu becomes moie ueclaiative
in how he speaks anu his content becomes much uaikei anu is full of the imageiy of
ueath foi Tybalt anu ievenge.

Romeo's penalty is much woist than ueath, in his opinion since he will have to live
without }uliet because he is banneu fiom veiona. In act S scene S, he says that theie
is not life outsiue of veiona walls because "heaven is heie, wheie }uliet lives" like
Romeo saiu. Romeo's speech in act S, scene S page 2 is so aggiessive as he talks
about how eveiy unwoithy thing that lives in veiona can see }uliet but Romeo may
not. This shows how his passionate anu uieamy peisonality can make him talk
about how the unwoithy things can kiss }uliet's lips anu how he woulu iathei uie
than be without hei. Fiom this speech, Romeo lets the auuience unueistanu even
moie about how a life without }uliet means nothing to him.
