BIOENGINEERING

Shaping the future of the biomedical workforce.

INTEGRATING STATE-Of-THE-ART RESEARCH WITH EDUCATION

Clemson Universitys Department of Bioengineering, widely recognized as a pioneer in the eld of biomaterials science and engineering, is renowned for its leadership in research and education for medical devices and technology. Building on its 50-year history in preparing students for careers in bioengineering, the department has more than tripled in size in the past decade. This commitment to providing a unique learning environment to students and scientists-in-training is being strengthened by an integration of stateof-the-art research with education and economic development. Using more than 110,000 square feet of bioengineering translational and lab facility space, students are mastering their innovation skills under the guidance of 27 fulltime faculty members and 45 clinical adjunct faculty members.

Translating great ideas from the laboratory to industry will be the mission of our generation. To prepare us for this vast undertaking, the bioengineering program at Clemson not only builds technically well-versed engineers, but we also learn how toevaluate clinical needs and demands, establish value propositions and carry our ideas from bench to bedside with clinician and industry collaborations.

FOCUS ON CLINICAL TRANSLATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

In 2011, the Clemson University Biomedical Engineering Innovation Center, CUBEInC, was opened at the Patewood campus of the Greenville Health System. Combining basic research labs, a medical skills lab and technology incubator space, CUBEInC provides a unique platform for Clemson faculty and students to develop high-impact medical technology and devices, and to transfer research and engineering to clinical applications.

From working on design projects that solve real-world problems to collaborating with industry and clinical partners to conduct research studies, the experience and education I have received at Clemson encompasses so much more than a traditional bioengineering curriculum. Margeaux Rogers, Senior

TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION Of THINKERS, LEADERS AND ENTREPRENEURS

Clemsons B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. graduates develop skills and gain entrepreneurship experience to take technology and research from bench to bedside. CORE COMPETENCIES Engineering graphics (Solidworks) Full knowledge of parts, assemblies, drawings and tolerancing Biomaterials Synthesis, characterization and biocompatibility Bioinstrumentation and medical imaging Biomechanics Solid and uid mechanics Tissue engineering Scaffold fabrication, aseptic cell culture and bioreactor design Regulatory 510k and PMA process knowledge, IDE, MDR and IACUC/IRB Communication skills Public speaking and technical writing in independent and teambased projects
In addition to classroom and lab training, the undergraduate students formed the Biomedical Engineering Development Society (BioMEDS). This society focuses on professional development, service opportunities and fellowship with one another while attending workshops, conferences and guest lectures that give them an edge in the competitive world of bioengineering. Allison Kennamer, President of BioMEDS

VALUE-ADDED EXPERIENCES

SeNIOr DesIGN In partnership with the Greenville Health System, Clemson bioengineering offers a clinically motivated, two-semester senior design experience with training in quality function deployments, DFMEA analysis, Gantt charts, protocol writing, manufacturing processes, iterative prototyping, and verication and validation testing. First place national recognition Students won the 2012 National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance BMEStart undergraduate design competition for project AssureFit, a novel chest tube-anchoring device developed through the Biomedical Engineering Capstone Design Program. Intellectual property and economic development Clemson bioengineering senior design has generated patent applications, licenses and startups.

CreAtIVe INQUIrY A unique, multi-semester, team-based research program, Creative Inquiry (CI) offers students exposure to cutting-edge research. Sample projects include orthopedic implant retrieval program, EKG simulation and modeling, robotics and bioengineering, functional tissue engineering of heart valves. HIGh-IMPAct OUtcOMes CI Reengineering Medical Training Simulators have generated a patent application and faculty-led small business startup. GLObAL PersPectIVes Clemson offers bioengineeringspecic study abroad opportunities in Pamplona, Spain; Nanyang National Technological University in Singapore; and the University of Tokyo in Japan. Through our Medical Technology for the Developing World CI program, Clemson bioengineering students develop technology for low-resource settings, including on-site learning and service in Tanzania.

INNOvATIvE EDUCATION INITIATIvES

CertIFIcAte IN MeDIcAL DeVIce RecYcLING AND RePrOcessING Branded as GreenMD, this is an engineering research and training program focused on optimizing medical device designs for reprocessing and reuse, and promoting medical device sustainability. DUAL M.S. IN BIOeNGINeerING/MBA IN ENtrePreNeUrshIP AND INNOVAtION This one-year, intensive experiential program allows students to develop a business plan around a new biomedical device concept while earning a non-thesis M.S. degree in bioengineering. Students graduate with an MBA degree, an M.S. in bioengineering and a market-ready business.

ALUMNI LEAD THE fIELD

Since 1963, Clemson has graduated more than 600 bioengineers who play a prominent role in research and industry. Clemson alumni hold leadership positions at companies such as Johnson & Johnson/Synthes, Boston Scientic, St. Jude, Medtronic, Medical Carbon Research, DePuy, Smith & Nephew, Pzer, Merck, Stryker and Cook; at agencies such as the FDA and NIH; and at numerous academic institutions.
