Representations of Evil.

The sententious side of The Dark Knight

In general, movies must send a message to its viewers. In my essay, i will try to expose the message i got, as a viewer of the Dark Knhight movie. atman trylogy fas!inated me and my favourite !hara!ters were the negative !hara!ters as "oker or ane, #e!ause I think that they are the fa!ts that make the message of a movie to #e send in the right way. ut in this essay i will only make refferen!e to the The Dark Knigh $%&&'(. In this movie is presented, inter alia, the fight #etween the human goodness and the human illness, this movie shows us in what !ir!umstan!es human goodness is !an!elled and !ir!umstan!es when people show their humanity. The images of evil are ilustrated in this movie in different ways, #y different !hara!ters or se)uen!es, #ut the most important and relevant elements, in my opinion , a!!ording to my essay purpose, are* the evil in "oker, the evil in atman, the evil in +arvey Two ,a!es, and the "oker-s .so!ial experiment. In the first pla!e, "oker represent the ruined man, who no longer #elieves in human goodness or integrity. +e-s appearan!e transmits despair, !ra/yness, ilness* the green hair, the terrifing make0up whi!h is a !ari!ature of a real !lown make0up. +e is an evil !lown, he is the adverse of a real !lown who is supposed to make people laugh* this "oker terrify people, he-s a !old #looded !riminal. +e lost his faith in humanity and he try to demonstrate that the nature of human #eing is evil* .all these !ivilised people will eat ea!h other when they will #e in danger. "oker wants to !on)uer the town and to install the !haos* .the only logi!al way to live in this world is with no rules. "oker represents the pure evil in a human #eing, the evil that is mu!h like !ra/yness* he is sadi!, !old #looded murderer, he is sar!asti!, he has an evil laugh and he has a #la!k sense of humour. I must say that he em#odies the evil, fear, frustrations of all the people from the !ity, all the evil is !on!entrated in one only !hara!ter and turns him into a destru!tive for!e. "oker is o#sessed with atman and the dialogue #etween this two !hara!ters from the interview !ell in prison is very important* "oker 1ustify his a!tions and exposes his #eliefs in

front of atman* .the morals and ethi!s of these people are a #ad 1oke. 2...3 they will eat ea!h other when they will #e in danger, .I don-t wanna kill you, you !omplete me, .i-m not a monster4 he thinks all the people are evil in their essen!e and he sees no point in using rules and in pretending that there exists a !ivili/ed so!iety. This !hara!ter shows his psy!hopati! side #y his gestures and a!tions, "oker kills for pleasure, he don-t want money .it-s not a#out the money, he only wants to !reate !haos around him* .i-m an agent of the !haos. +e !onsider himself a vi!tim, and when he has the o!!asion, he tells the story of his s!ars, always a different story* this fa!t may attest the statement that he represents the evil in its essen!e, he represents the ill from all people of 5otham. +e assumes this statut of ill0side #e!ause he tells to atman that he !omplets him, knowing that atman fight for the goodness. In the se!ond pla!e, atman is !alled .dark knight for the reason that he is in the dark side, #ut only to destroy the evil from the interior. ,or that reason, people and authorities !onsider him as a thief, #e!ause he often makes #ad for good. This mean that atman makes a sa!rifi!e* #y his a!tions in order to prote!t his !ity and people, he seems to #e the villain and he a!!epts this situation #e!ause this is the only way in whi!h he !an a!!omplish his mission. atman !an #e seen as the !ity-s s!apegoat4 somehow, he a#sor#s all the #lame and sins so that the !ity !an #e !lean. ,or example, Dent was !onsidered the .white knight of 5otham #e!ause he was a su!!esful prose!utor who fight against the !orruption4 after he #e!omes a murderer and dies, atman assumes the guilt for Dent-s murderers so that his image remains !lean in people-s awareness. The fa!t that atman wears a mask !an #e interpreted, from my point of view, in two different ways* firstly, the mask keeps him in the dark side, he identifies himself with that dark world in whi!h he must stay for the good of his !ity. 6e!ondly, the la!k of a !on!rete identity of atman suggest that anyone !an #e atman and that it doesn-t need to #e a hero to fight for the goodness4 atman doesn-t !onsider himself a hero, he-s not a hero, he only represents the good side of the people, #y staying in the dark side* .i-m anything 5otham needs me to #e. In whi!h !ir!umstan!es goodness turns into evil7 Dent +arvey, as I mentioned #efore, is a su!!esful prose!utor who started to annoy the #ad guys who have illegal #usinesses in

5otham. +e loves Ra!hel who a!!epted his proposal, #ut she-s killed #y "oker-s people. Dent feels #etrayed #y his own people, he #lame them for Ra!hel-s death and he #e!omes a murderer who toss up in order to kill or save his vi!tim-s life. I think that Dent as a murderer is "oker-s produ!t4 Dent was a sym#ol of good and "oker !hoose him to demonstrate that human #eing is #ad and evil, and in extreme situations $Dent-s fyan!ee is dead and he feels #etrayed( people #e!ame monsters. The last aspe!t I will dis!uss and whi!h seems interesting for me #e!ause it !ontests "oker-s #eliefs and show that atman a!tually has a motivation to fight for, that his faith in people have fa!tual #asis* "oker-s .so!ial experiment. "oker was firm !onvin!ed that the #oats will destroy ea!h other, he !onsider people as #eing weak, !oward, selfish, and this experiment showed him the !ontrary. I think that this episode may #e seen as repre/entative for the !ir!umstan!e in whi!h people show their humanity. In !on!lusion, the sententious message of this movie !an #e understood #y the viewers #eside all the other elements that make from this movie a phenomenon of !inematography $rigs, fights, spe!ial effe!ts, !hara!ters(. The !lasi!al fight #etween good and evil is ilustrated in a new way, this fight is eternal and it persist in the evolved world, within !ivilised so!ieties whi!h is edu!ational and te!hnologi!al advan!ed.
