ABB RELEASES NEW LOW-VOLTAGE BREAKER
Smart Meters, April 13, 2013
(Online article at http://bit.ly/Yozsp9)

ABB has introduced Emax 2, the first low-voltage circuit breaker with integrated energy management functions that can
potentially save 5.8 million megawatt-hours (MWh) annually when compared to traditional breakersthe equivalent
electric consumption of 1.4 million EU households. The energy savings would also reduce CO2 emissions by four
million tons of CO2, the same as taking more than one million cars off the road every year.

According to ABB, breakers like the Emax 2 are used where protection and control of large amounts of energy are
used in a low-voltage environment like industrial and commercial buildings, data centers, or ships. The breaker
contains a protection trip relay with an integrated power controller that measures and evaluates energy consumption,
then manages the loads to maintain or reduce the peak power usage as determined by the user. This will also help
prevent blackouts since the root cause is often peak demand exceeding supply.
The breaker also has a communication module that facilitates the sharing of consumption and system reliability data
directly with the smart grid.

Tarak Mehta, Head of ABBs Low Voltage products division, explains, Breakers provide one of the largest untapped
opportunities in the electric system to achieve energy savings. Breakers have been used to increase safety and protect
electric circuits, but now for the first time we use them to save energy too. Because breakers are all around us, the
total energy savings potential is massive. Its a great example of how we can use smart technology to reduce energy
wastage. This is good news for the environment and for our customers who can achieve significant cost savings by
switching to our new device.

The development of the new Emax 2 breaker was led by ABBs development center in Bergamo, Italy.

ABB MARRIES ENERGY MANAGEMENT TO LOW-VOLTAGE CIRCUIT BREAKERS
Greentech Media, April 11, 2013, By Katherine Tweed
(Online article at http://bit.ly/ZQx2ic)

On Tuesday, ABB unveiled the worlds first low-voltage circuit breaker with energy management functions built in.

The SACE Emax 2 air circuit breaker can save energy by using loads more efficiently and also flatten load demand to
reduce demand charges. Breakers like the Emax 2 are widely used in low-voltage environments in various industries,
including commercial buildings, manufacturing plants, data centers, ships and windmills.

We wanted to make something that could contribute to increased efficiency in electrical distribution, said Pietro
Esposto, global product manager of low-voltage air circuit breakers for ABB. The idea was, we must design it to
integrate with the smart grid.

The breaker is not that much different from its predecessor, but is equipped with a communications chip that runs on
the IEC 61850 standard and is embedded with ABBs power controller technology that uses software to manage non-
essential downstream loads. The system can work with any building management system or can operate on its own.

Esposto said that savings come in two ways. One is that it can maximize the efficiency of the loads. Instead of running
three HVAC compressors at 50 percent, for instance, it can run two at a more efficient 100 percent. Adjustments like
that can result in cost savings of 3 percent to 4 percent.

The greater savings, however, come from adjusting load to avoid demand charges. Pietro said that in a department
store, the power controller could drop peak load from 580 kilowatts to about 500 kilowatts, which could save thousands
of dollars over the course of a year. He said prices were still being finalized, but that the payback was usually three to
four months in any type of building. The energy savings costs for load shifting is about 15 percent to 17 percent of peak
demand.

Pietro described the product as the smart grids entry point into the low-voltage network. The circuit breakers can talk
to each other if there is a fault. The fault can be isolated and then the other parts of the system can open back up.

ABB expects that customers could use the circuit breakers not just to save money by shifting load, but also maybe to
make some money off of demand response programs.
This is just the beginning of a wave of communications and controls being built directly into equipment (from motors to
solid-state lighting) so that smaller loads can be automatically tailored to supply.
Breakers provide one of the largest untapped opportunities in the electric system to achieve energy savings. Breakers
have been used to increase safety and protect electric circuits, but now, for the first time, we use them to save energy
too, Tarak Mehta, head of ABBs Low Voltage Products division, said in a statement.

Because breakers are all around us, the total energy savings potential is massive. Its a great example of how we can
use smart technology to reduce energy wastage, he added. The infographic below shows the potential savings if all of
these types of breakers were to be replaced with ABBs new Emax breakers.

ABB is already taking orders for countries using the IEC standard (i.e., Europe, Middle East, China) and expects to
ship this summer. It is awaiting final approval of a UL standard and expects to have a product for North America in
early 2014.

ABB RELEASES LOW-VOLTAGE CIRCUIT BREAKER WITH INTEGRATED ENERGY MANAGEMENT
Smart Grid News, April 10, 2013
(Online article at http://bit.ly/10Nu6Fn)

ABB says its Emax 2 low-voltage circuit breaker is the world's first to include integrated energy management
capabilities, and that it has the potential for providing real energy savings.

Low-voltage breakers are used in environments like commercial and industrial buildings, data centers and ships where
protection and control of large quantities of electricity is needed. ABB's Emax 2 has a protection trip relay and
integrated power controller that measures power use and with that information manages loads to maintain or lower
peak power use as directed by the user. ABB says that capability also will help fend off blackouts since demand
exceeding supply is frequently the primary cause.

In the energy management function, power to non-essential equipment is turned off then back on again when the
correct power levels are reached. The intelligent decision making is accomplished by a built in controller and software
using complex algorithms to determine when the time is right to change power levels but still maintain the overall
continued operation of connected equipment. The breaker also includes a communication module so it can share
critical use and system reliability information with smart grid and other protocols.

"Breakers provide one of the largest untapped opportunities in the electric system to achieve energy savings. Breakers
have been used to increase safety and protect electric circuits, but now for the first time we use them to save energy
too," said Tarak Mehta, head of ABB's Low Voltage products division.

"Because breakers are all around us, the total energy savings potential is massive. It's a great example of how we can
use smart technology to reduce energy wastage. This is good news for the environment and for our customers who
can achieve significant cost savings by switching to our new device."

ABB says the potential for energy savings could reach 5.8 million megawatt-hours annually, or the electricity use
equivalent of 1.4 million U.S. homes per year.

NEW ABB LV CIRCUIT BREAKERS DO SMART ENERGY MANAGEMENT
Smart Grid Today, April 10, 2013

ABB released a new low-voltage circuit breaker with energy management functions that could save firms millions of
MWHs/year and make blackouts less likely, the automation firm told the press yesterday. The circuit breaker has an
"integrated power controller that measures and evaluates energy consumption," the firm said, and is suited for "low-
voltage environments" such as industrial and commercial buildings.

The breaker's power controller also lets firms manage peak power use, helping to avoid blackouts that happen when
peak demand exceeds supply, said ABB. "To manage energy, the electricity supply to non-essential equipment is
switched off and back on again as soon as acceptable power levels are reached," the firm added.

ABB last month unveiled new hardware for circuit breakers of a higher voltage -- between 38 KVs and 800 KVs (SGT,
Mar-27).

"Breakers provide one of the largest untapped opportunities in the electric system to achieve energy savings," Tarak
Mehta, head of ABB's low-voltage products division, said in prepared remarks. "Because breakers are all around us,
the total energy savings potential is massive," he added.

Zurich-based ABB developed the new breaker, known as "Emax 2," at a research center in Bergamo, Italy over the
course of several years, the firm said.

Schiffen.
Jahres.

GIGANTISCHES STROMSPAR-POTENZIAL: ABB LANCIERT REVOLUTIONREN SCHALTER
Aargauer Zeitung, April 9, 2013
(Online article at http://bit.ly/YizAuL)

ber 1 Million Autos ermglichen.

Entwicklung leitete das ABB-Entwicklungszentrum in Bergamo (I).

anderen Protokollen austauschen. Zum Marktpotenzial von Emax 2 machte Mediensprecher Schmidt keine
Angaben.

(Online article at http://bit.ly/YuL8Xp)

nelle reti elettriche intelligenti.
Interruttori come Emax 2
come impianti industriali e commerciali, data center o navi.

consumption, then manages the loads to maintain or reduce the peak power usage as determined by the user. This will
also help prevent blackouts since the root cause is often peak demand exceeding supply.

To manage energy, the electricity supply to non-essential equipment is switched off and back on again as soon as
acceptable power levels are reached. Intelligent decision making is achieved by a built in controller and software that
uses complex algorithms to decide when it is appropriate to switch the power while maintaining the overall functionality
or productivity of the connected equipment.

The breaker also has a communication module that allows it to share vital consumption and system reliability data
directly with smart grid and other protocols.

I'm proud of this technological innovation created and produced in Italy, now to be exported worldwide: yet another
confirmation of the Italian ability to develop progress affirmed Barbara Frei, Country Manager for ABB Italy. ABB's
contribution towards the march of technology is our precise and long-term target: 2% of our turnover is invested each
year in Research and Development and over the past 5 years we've registered an average of 27 patents in Italy alone,
attesting to our substantive and fruitful attention to innovation. It is a commitment that also leads us to interact and
create value with Italy's academic world.
The development of the new Emax 2 breaker took several years and was led by ABBs development center in
Bergamo, Italy.

In 2012, ABB invested about 1.5 billion in research and development and continues to employ 7,000 technologists
worldwide.

ABB launched Emax 2, the first low-voltage circuit-breaker with integrated power management functions. Replacing
existing traditional breakers with the Emax 2 breaker has the potential to achieve annual savings of 5.8 million
megawatt-hours (MWh). This is the equivalent electric consumption of 1.4 million EU households. These energy
savings would reduce emissions by 4 million tons of CO2, or the emissions of over 1 million cars, per year.

For an individual building installation, a peak power reduction of up to 15 percent can be achieved by using Emax 2 in
place of traditional breakers.

Breakers like the Emax 2 are used where protection and control of large amounts of energy are used in a low-voltage
environment like industrial and commercial buildings, data centers or ships.

Replacing an existing breaker with the new Emax 2 is technically simple. Due to energy savings on electricity bill, the
Emax 2 breaker will typically pay for itself within a year.

The breaker contains a protection trip relay with an integrated Power Controller that measures and evaluates energy
consumption, then manages the loads to maintain or reduce the peak power usage as determined by the user. This will

ABB LANSERAR VRLDENS FRSTA LGSPNNINGSBRYTARE FR ENERGISTYRNING
Fastighet & Bostadsrtt, April 9, 2013, By Bjrn Asplind
(Online article at http://bit.ly/152mZ1A)

ABB lanserar idag Emax 2, vrldens frsta lgspnningsbrytare med integrerade funktioner fr energistyrning. Emax 2
erbjuder potentiella elbesparingar p 5,8 miljoner megawattimmar (MWh) per r, motsvarande elfrbrukningen i 1,4
miljoner europeiska hushll.

ocks spara energi, sger Tarak Mehta, chef fr ABB:s division Low Voltage products.
