Pastors Corner
Pageantry, friendship, betrayal, suffering, death, and triumph. Sounds like a great story, doesnt it? It is. Its the story of Jesus final days, the last week of his earthly existence. On Sunday, April 13 we begin with the pageantry of Jesus entry into Jerusalem amid palm-waving and cries of hosanna. We share in Jesus last supper with his intimate associates on Maundy Thursday, April 17. That night we watch an hour with Jesus, knowing that one of his friends has betrayed him and men are on their way to arrest him. Good Friday, April 18, we listen at Jesus trial, we watch the scourging by the soldiers, we stand among the crowd as his staggers toward Golgotha, carrying the cross. We sit in stunned silence as Jesus draws his last breath and dies. And on Easter Sunday, April 20, in wonder and astonishment we discover an empty tomb. This Holy Week, April 13-20, there are worship opportunities each day except Saturday (see the article in this issue). Given how busy our lives are, its hard to carve out time to worship at St. Francis beyond Sunday morning. But immersing ourselves in worship during Holy Week does deepen the meaning of Easter. On Maundy Thursday, as we remember Jesus sharing his last supper with his disciples, we enrich our weekly Eucharist. When we arrive at the empty tomb having experienced the Good Friday despair of the crucifixion and death of Jesus, Easter joy abounds. Gods love is so powerful, it overcomes death. What can trump a story in which there is no ending? Alleluia! -- Pastor Sally

EASTER
Easter is not a battle between darkness and light that ultimately must end in the victory of light, because darkness is actually a nothing, because death is indeed already life. Easter is not a battle of winter and spring, of ice and sun. Rather, it is the battle of guilty humanity against divine love or better: of divine love against guilty humanity, a battle in which God seems to be defeated on Good Friday, but in which God, in his very losing, wins on Easter. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Easter Message

Go Crazy, Folks, Go Crazy!

Not, this time, with a baseball but with a bowling ball. This months social outing comes at the invitation of our Youth Group who have arranged an evening of Crazy Bowl. This sounds like fun for everyone! Crazy bowlers switch up the rules by changing the official, appropriate stance for getting a strike. Bowl with your opposite hand; bowl from a seated position; bowl backwards, through your legs. This is bound to be a blast! Challenge yourself to an evening of crazy fun with your St. Francis friends, young and old. Friday, April 11th, 6:00 p.m. West County Lanes

Holy Week and Easter Worship

Palm Sunday - April 13 at 10 a.m. at the Lodge Worship begins in the Lodge parking lot as we wave palms and sing, remembering Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. Theres a sign-up sheet in the lobby, if youd like to read a part of Matthews narrative of Jesus arrest and crucifixion. Its perfectly OK for a woman to read Jesus part and a man to read the servant girls. Seder meal - Tuesday, April 15 at 7 p.m. at the Lodge We'll eat and pray, similarly to what Jesus and the disciples did, in this Passover meal and celebration. Please bring a dish to share for the potluck. Michael Booker will lead the program portion. Stations of the Cross and Taize -- Wednesday, April 16 at 7 p.m. at the Lodge We'll view images of the stations of the cross, pray, and chant Taize songs. Maundy Thursday -- April 17 at 7 p.m. at the Lodge We'll remember Jesus' last supper with the disciples as we share our Holy Communion. At the end of the service we'll strip the altar as we listen to Bob Smith read Psalm 22, and we'll leave in silence as we reflect upon Jesus' arrest this night. Thursday vigil at the parish house (210 S. Central Ave.) If you would like to sit quietly, pray, or read, the parish house at 210 S. Central Ave. will be available for that. A sign-up sheet will be at the Lodge. Youll use the key in the lockbox on the porch to come and go. Good Friday -- April 18 at noon and 7 p.m. at the Lodge In this solemn service we remember Jesus' crucifixion. Easter -- April 20 at 10 a.m. at the Lodge We'll celebrate Jesus' resurrection with trumpets, flowers, incense, sanctus bells, a choir anthem, and a sung Eucharist. There's an indoors Easter egg hunt and a delicious potluck meal after worship.

Red-Wagon Ministry
Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? Matthew 25:35 We all know the answer to that question. Whenever we feed the hungry, we are feeding a hungry Jesus. We are doing what he did and what he asks us to do. At St. Francis, we do it in style red wagon style. Each week, the people of St. Francis bring food and household products and place them in the red wagon at the entrance to the sanctuary. At the Offertory, the children bring the filled wagon to the altar. (This act alone is a touching and sometimes entertaining view of shared ministry!) As soon as possible, the gifts are taken to the Eureka Food Pantry where people in need can get them for their families. Providing food and household products for the Eureka Food Pantry is something St. Francis has been doing week in and week out for almost as many years as we have existed. It is a way that even our busiest families, or those on a limited income, can participate in the feeding of the hungry. The pantry, a shared ministry of the Eureka churches, is dependent on our gifts, and it is our gift to provide them. We should note here that other St. Francis ministries provide limited -time assistance to feeding the poor. Through the Trinity Hot Lunch Program, we feed people on the fifth Sunday of every month that has one. Through our community garden, we raise fresh produce all summer for the Eureka Food Pantry. For more information: Eureka Food Pantry and the Red Wagon ministry: see Arlene Underwood, Paddy Wrob or George Vits. The Bishops Column for April 2014

Exactly fifty years ago, April 5, 1964 being the date, I received the sacrament of baptism in the First Baptist Church in Tuscola, Texas, a moment which I remember vividly. More important, here is the great point of reference for the whole of my life and faith and how I make sense of it all: Baptism invests the believer with the full dignity and responsibility of life in Christ Jesus; everything else is a matter of detail. So my thirty-two years in ordained ministry make sense to me only inasmuch as I remember that baptism is the foundational sacrament. The deep gratitude that I have for my marriage to Debra Morris Smith has its fullest expression as baptism shapes that part of my life. Baptism is the primordial act by which God extends to us the forgiveness of sins won for us in Christ. Baptism immerses the believer into the community, and into Gods own lifewhich is what it means to be baptized in the name of the Holy and Undivided Trinity. Not least of all, baptism sweeps the new believer explicitly into Gods cosmic drama of salvation. God in Christ is at work reconciling the whole universe to self, of which baptism is a sign. Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. (Romans 6:3-5) So I give thanks for my own baptism, and for the high privilege, as bishop, of presiding over so many baptisms. And for being part of a baptized-and-baptizing community.

Mens Group Cooks!

Sunday, April 6th, between worship and Adult Forum, well be treated to a home-cooked feast created by the men of St. Francis newest ministry. The men plan to meet once a month, alternating weeknights and Saturday mornings. Their activities will be whatever the guys decide, from golf to giving, from beer to bicycling. And it will all start this Sunday with a delicious home-style breakfast for us all. Be sure to be there!

Visiting Our Local Prison

I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.Matthew 25:36 Community Services Ministries at St. Francis is responding to an expressed need for help from the people at The Missouri Eastern Correctional Center (MECC). Their Restorative Justice Program runs a few volunteer-dependent programs to help offenders accomplish some positive, practical work that will help them give back to their communities. At MECC, offenders who earn the privilege can participate in a sewing program that creates pillows (and soon quilts) for the seamsters to give away to hospitals and other places that need that bit of comfort. They have also begun a second year garden season that should grow about one ton of food to be given to the clients of Agape House. The sewing project and the garden project are where our help is needed, and where several of us would like to help out. Gloria Link will join us for an Adult Forum to explain the programs and to answer any questions we might have. If you might like to visit the imprisoned, and would like some productive work to come from that visit, be sure to join us on that day. Questions in the meantime? Ask Kathleen McDonald.

Invitational Ministry Resumes

As soon as the weather turns nice, Pastor Sally and a parishioner will be ringing doorbells in the Ashton Woods and Mirasol neighborhoods on Saturday mornings beginning at 9:30 a.m., inviting people to come worship with us at St. Francis. If youre interested in being a part of this invitational ministry please let Pastor Sally know. Meeting our neighbors and learning about the people who live close to us is a great experience.

Easter Egg Hunt

The Youth Group will once again be putting on an egg hunt following worship on Easter, April 20. Well be hunting eggs upstairs in the Lodge, so weather wont be a factor. Prizes and eggs abound. Every child will be a winner. And none of the prizes is candy. So bring your kids and grandkids to join the fun. Easter was when Hope in person surprised the whole world by coming forward from the future into the present.

March 16 Bishops Committee Highlights

Opening Business: Kevin Broom reviewed our discussion of the vision statement for St. Francis and asked us to consider whether we want to focus on external or internal goals. We will continue our discussion at the next meeting. Treasurers Report

Quarterly statements will be distributed after March 31. We are currently operating in the black.

Vicars Report

The new refrigerator is here. The executive committee recommended that we purchase an extended 2year warranty. Judy Cody moved and Sue Schmidt seconded that we purchase the extended warranty for approximately $187. After discussion, the motion failed. Sally reminded everyone of the policy that the email list is for office use only; parishioners should not send information out using that list. She also reminded us that monetary needs are included in the budget and that we will not be collecting donations for ministries. Performance evaluations and goals are in progress. Staff members are developing goals for 2014. At the next meeting, work will continue on our vision statement. Sally reviewed the action items from the BC retreat in February.
