Pre-Engineering

Mr. Basso Portable 2 mike.basso@washk12.org

Intro
This course is an application of principles into engineering and how engineering is all around us. In this course youll engage in projects that can assist you in making educational and career choices for the future and how engineering impacts society. Throughout the year we will mix lectures and activities designed to have students become problems solvers and innovators. The course will be challenging but should prove to be a rewarding experience. I hope you students will take advantage of the opportunities and potential of this class to help shape your future.

What do I need?
In this class well be using a combination of traditional note taking, worksheets, hackpad-an online collaborative way to organize notes and information-and an online resource called Canvas. The benefit to this is the portability of information youll get from class and the ability to link related online material easily. By doing this, the whole class can contribute AND benefit from each other. You should use a 3-ring binder, to keep an engineering notebook that holds your engineering drawings that also has lined paper so you can keep notes organized for reference and keeping throughout the year. I will provide the engineering notepaper. Students may also want a small notebook to jot down ideas you gain from class, as well as to write down ideas and questions that come to your mind as you study and learn. Students are expected to keep all worksheets that are returned for reference and as a backup in case there are any mistakes in grading. Record keeping and documentation is an important part of engineering. Students should save work in order to put it in a portfolio at the end of the year. It can serve as an important piece when applying for college and career positions.

Rules and Expectations

Be responsible and courteous Be prepared, on time, and ready to work and learn. Respect other students, the teacher, and their property, as well as school equipment. Listen and follow instructions. Have assignments ready to turn in when theyre due. Develop life-long learning skills Think about what you are doing, and what is being taught. Take charge of your own learning, and do your best according to your own learning style. Use the Ask 3 principle. Express to the teacher your concerns about your learning, and participate in RTI (times to get extra help) when wanted. Communicate appropriately and effectively Your ideas and questions should be communicated well, whether written, orally, or in a project. Safety

Students will be required to pass safety tests before they can use any equipment in the lab. There are sensitive, fragile and potentially dangerous materials, equipment and supplies in the Lab and Classroom. The general rule is that you never have permission to go and use anything you want to. Failure to obey this may result in penalties against the student(s). Students will conduct themselves in order to contribute to a safe classroom and working environment. When in the lab students must wear closed-toed shoes, wear safety glasses (class set provided) and tie long hair and loose clothing (more safety instruction will follow as we begin working in the lab). Demonstrate Integrity Work will be completed on your own, or within groups when specified. Cheating will result in a failing grade for that assignment. If a student is found to repeatedly break classroom rules, expectations, and compromise personal integrity, the student will be reported to school administration and disciplinary action may result. Tardy Policy To be on-time you must be on the ramp or inside the classroom door. If you are tardy you must sign-in on the tardy roll (located on the lab pass-through door). Roll will be taken promptly and signing-in on the tardy roll validates your attendance. If you forget to sign-in your absence mark will remain on the attendance roll. Late/Redo policy Assignments will be handed in on time. If you cant turn an assignment in on time because you forgot about it, lost it, or didnt complete it, it will be marked as late on PowerSchool. You may hand in up to 3 assignments late per quarter without penalty-the assignment will be graded as usual. After 3 assignments are late all subsequent late assignments can be assessed for learning and improvement but will be entered as a zero (0) on PowerSchool. If higher point-value assignments are submitted late after youve used up the 3 allotted passes I can zero out a previously graded assignment and use the late pass for the higher value assignment. In a nutshell: Ill keep track of late assignments through PowerSchool, and students with a habit of late assignments may encounter surprises at the end of the quarter when assignments get zero-ed out. This does not apply to students that make special deals or have accommodations (IEP etc.) Excused/Activity Absences Students may miss days when assignments are given or when due for various reasons. When this is the case you must attach an Excused/Activity absence slip to the assignment-or hand it in separately for electronic submissions-to be exempted from the Late/Redo policy. It requires your name, reason for absence, your signature, parent/guardian/coach/advisor signature and date. When you miss class it is your responsibility to ask what you missed. You can check hackpad for notes that your classmates took while you were gone. If you know of absences coming up, itll be easier to plan ahead and make prior arrangements; otherwise ask when you return and attach an Excused/Activity Absence Slip. Students will be required to obey all PVHS rules and policies. Phones may be used in class for the sole purpose of calculation, reference or research. Students who break this rule will have their phones confiscated for the class period. Computers in the classroom are to be used for note taking, research, reference, and electronic assignments. Playing games, watching videos, checking scores & other unrelated use is not allowed. Please observe this and police yourselves. If you prove that you cant avoid inappropriate computer-use, you will forfeit the privilege of using computers in class.

Grading
Grades are calculated using the scores you earn on in-class and take home assignments, participation, progress, lab-reports, projects and other assessments.

This course is designed to introduce students to the engineering field. Engineering scope, content, and professional practices are presented through practical applications. Career research will be conducted to expose students to the educational requirements, job outlooks and expected wages in the various engineering disciplines. Students in engineering teams apply technology, science, mathematics concepts, and writing/presentation skills to solve engineering design problems and innovate designs. Students research, develop, test and analyze engineering designs using criteria such as design effectiveness, public safety, human factors, and ethics. These are the Standards and Objectives for this course: STANDARD 1-Students will develop an understanding of the nature and scope of engineering. Objective 1: Explain the purpose of engineering. Objective 2: Identify the various career paths available in engineering. a.Identify available engineering paths. b.Identify other related engineering paths. Objective 3: Understand how ethics are a part of the engineering design process. STANDARD 2-Students will understand problem solving and the design process used in engineering. Objective 1: Identify problem-solving steps and procedures. Objective 2: Explain prototyping and production. Objective 3: Safely and effectively use tools and equipment. STANDARD 3-Students will demonstrate communication skills needed in engineering. Objective 1: Participate in teaming and individual problem solving. Objective 2: Drawing delineation (language). Objective 3: Create and present a portfolio. STANDARD 4 Student will understand the application of technology, science and math. Objective 1: Complete a design brief activity. As there are many diverse types of students with different skills and abilities who enter this course, we will use diverse methods for teaching and learning. Students may engage in hands-on problem solving activities, individual and group work, self-guided research, and classroom lecture, to prepare students as future technologists, engineers, innovators, and positive contributors in their communities and professions. RTI is a chance to get caught up, get extra help and extra explanation. Students can arrange beforehand to come in during any RTI day without being tagged even on days not designated for this class. But when students are tagged you are expected to come because I see a need to get you on track with the learning pace of class.

The Bosss Wall of Fame

Many activities in which we will participate include challenges and problem solving. Some will include an element of competition against fellow classmates. That piece of work could be placed on The Bosss Wall of Fame for all to see, for years to come. I welcome you to what I hope will be a great experience here at Pine View High, and hope to help you learn great things this year.
