Helvetica Neue is a reworking
of the typeface Helvetica with a
more structurally unifed set of
heights and widths. lt was
designed at D. Stempel AG a
Linotype subsidiary. Erik
Spiekermann was the design
consultant and designed the
literature for the launch in 1983.
Some more changes included
improved legibility, heavier
punctuation marks and increased
spacing in the numbers.
Helvetica Neue uses numerical
design classifcation scheme, like
Universe. Linotype distributes
Helvetica Neue on CD and comes
in variants for Central European
and Cyrillic text. Helvetica Neue
has a coherence, visual effciency

international feel, makes it
highly usable and easily readable.
The Helvetica family is strongly
associated with the clean,
ordered Swiss design of the
1960s. Helvetica like Times (Newj
Roman, remains one of the most
widely used typefaces, not least
due to its adoption to a system
font for Macs and a default font
for QuarkXPress. Font family is
made up of 51 fonts including 9
weights in 3 widths and an outline
font based on Helvetica 75 Bold
Outline. Each new weights and
styles carried a standard numeric
reference from 25 ultra light to 95
ultra heavy, to avoid confusion.
